Costa rica is wicked to backpack around. Good surf and super cheap to get a hammock on the beach for the night.

St. Marteen

Go to Belize, dude. Specifically, San Pedro. It's an island off of the coast. The tallest building on the island is no more than three stories. There are NO resorts, etc. You have to take a puddle jumper from the mainland to the island and they're all flown by pilots who used to smuggle drugs for the cartels. The runway on San Pedro was just recently paved, but used to be a dirt runway. The baggage claim is a piece of wood that someone wrote baggage claim on and hammered in to the dirt.

Virgin islands fo sho, so sick. You can island hop really easy too

I really liked the west coast of Nicaragua north of Leon. The southern part of the west coast is pretty touristy, but where we were had a couple of eco-hostels and not too much else. We stayed at a place called Rancho Esperanza in Jiquillio and it was the definition of chill.

some parts of bali/lombok are pretty nice. obviously there is also the mega touristy australian stuff, but you can find a few nice spots. its pretty cheap from the moment you get there and you can do a lot of stuff

The definition of chill:

USVI is pretty amazing. Picturesque, mellow surf, and you don't need a passport. Also has a lot of close Islands around it. St Thomas, Tortola, BVI.

there are plenty of areas in costa rica that are nearly untouched by tourists. they keep their roads shitty there in order to dissuade tourists. if you can make it to the pacific coast there are tons of awesome little beach towns.

playa blanca is an awesome little surf town that i visited. if you're fine with being inland, monteverde is dope AF as well as the arenal lake and volcano.

Just spent 3.5 weeks in Costa Rica and Panama. Just got home on saturday. Central america is seriously sick. Granted there are some rough spots, but certainly costa rica is extremely tourist friendly. very easy to get around, i've been down there four times so far (as well as honduras, belize, guatemala, nicaragua)

Panama was insane. spent a lot of time in Bocas del Toro, which is an island archipelago in the Caribbean. it is honestly perfect right now, safe and easy. backpacker friendly, cool surf, lots of young travelers from all over the world. There are hundreds of islands and miles of pristine beach. I'll also take a moment and mention the dozens of resort wear-clad argentine college girls walking around everywhere. it's easy to travel, fairly cheap, everyone speaks english.

You could also do the Caribbean coast of costa rica in the same trip. Puerto Viejo de Limon is a cool little town. also amazing surf, it get's HUGE. lots of backpacker infrastructure, safe, and again, miles of pristine beach. My uncle has been living there for 8 years, it's honestly paradise.

If you're interested in the pacific, northwestern costa rica is absolutely unbelievable. better surf than the carribean, although that part of CR is gonna be a little more expensive than the carribean. unless you go up into Nicaragua, but nica is sorta a shit show right now.

ALSO, Baja mexico is nice BUT only south of ensenada. Also, don't go looking for trouble in baja cause you'll find it. careful if you like to rage, if you hang out around certain types of bars or strip clubs, you're probably gonna get jumped and robbed. happens to dozens of americans. just use common sense

Also also, if you don't exactly want tropical, Brazil has the most beautiful beaches i've ever seen. Around Rio would be a GREAT time, but pricey. Bahia or Florianopolis in the north and south are also stunning. or South Africa. South Africa has incredible incredible backpacking infrastructure. you could have a SICK time in south africa for 600 ish a month.
