I ski with center mounted park/all mountain k2 skis. I generally stick to the on-piste groomed buttery trails and of course the park but I'm going with some buddies on a ski trip to a real mountain (coming from an Ontario guy) and wanted to try out some off-piste skiing. Anyone ever skied all mountain or back-country with center mounted twin tips? Good? Bad?
yes i have. i mount my resort powder skis 1 back from true center, which is pretty much center mount. if you're a proficient skier it will be fine. it's fun, you can bring your park skills to where they really matter - everywhere else.

Dude, symmetrical center mounted skis suck elephant dicks anywhere but the park. Sure, you can do it but you'll probably just end up looking like a park rat who got lost- heel-strong push turns, hands flying all over the place, perpetually in the backseat... I'd rent if I didn't have another option, you will not be maximizing your good times by riding park-specific setups elsewhere, especially the steeper and more edge-requiring terrain you get out on.
If you are comfortable using your edges you can ski a centermount ski anywhere, with slight modifications to your stance in soft snow. My park skis = my all mountain skis for the last 6 years. I love carving on center mounts, obviously they aren't designed for laying over massive turns but it works fine.
Lol that somebody downvoted my post thinking I was being a dick. Dude... Do you not understand the basic physics of center mounted skis? Nevermind... You absolutely deserve the shitty times you're about to have.
Basic physics still allow for centermounted skis to carve a turn, not sure why that is hard to understand. Of course they're gonna dive under powder but on groomers and bumps they're still a 100% functional ski...
Yes. I know. The question was one of enjoyment, which IMO would be maximized by perhaps spending a few bucks and demoing one of the many awesome skis out there set up to... Wait for it... Maximize the enjoyment of that set of conditions. Who knew pow skis are going to make your pow skiing awesome?!? I mean I know this is next level thinking but I'm here to help!
I never said park skis are useless or it's not possible. Woo sah broseph!!
I hate skiing on back mounted skis. It's not as fun, for me at least. I have no problem skiing all over the mountain with center mounted skis. It's a different style of skiing.
I love it. It's like being on a slalom ski but with the flex of a jib ski. You're mounted further up in the ski so initiating a turn is much quicker and you still have the entire effective edge of the ski to stabilize it at high speeds.
