WattsSpeaking of which, I'm just getting into reading the books but am going to try not to get ahead of the show because I think it will just make the experience of watching it worse. Can anyone who's read the books give me a rough idea of where to stop? I know it's hard because the chronology of the show doesn't match exactly with the books.
*CUMMINGS*Read them all. Book 3 will just about catch you up with the show; there are a few bits of filler and one or two possible future reveals in season 4 that haven't been published at all.

Read up to halfway to 3/4 way to A Storm of Swords. The last 1/4 of that book is nuts, and I feel if you watch it on the show and don't know what's coming it will make it much more shocking.

I may be in the minority here, but I had absolutely no reaction to the Red Wedding. Maybe because in the books Robb isn't a POV character. You grow more attached to him in the show then you do in the books. To me that would be like getting upset if Rickon dies, you don't know much about him and I could personally care less.

Will do. Thanks for the advice. As tempting as it is to just read all 5 all the way through, I know that if I do that it will make the experience of watching the show worse, whereas reading the books after watching the show only helps enrich the experience because the books have so much more in them that the show doesn't have the time to tell us.

I hear you on that. Not to be providing spoilers but A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons both are slower paced ( which isn't surprising seeing how they were meant to be one big book, GRRM eventually had to split it) I don't think you'd ruin anything in the show by reading those two, but wait until after this season is done. I read all 5 books in about 7 months ( it takes people much less if they have the time) but that's with working/ traveling etc.
If I were you I would wait until the end of this season then read all 5. The storyline is getting so choppy that some characters ( Theon/Reek, Dany) from book 5, while others are still in book 3. Some scenes are even past book 5 ( White Walkers castle).
1. The Grey Worm / Missandei romance is kinda a cool addition
2. Sansa Stark is actually so fucking badass and although it's creepy I kind of dig her newfound boss-ass-bitch attitude and her relationship with Littlefinger
3. That fight was one of the best moments in the books and holy fucking tits I had no idea they were allowed to show violence like that on television ....sooooo horrible. So good. Oh my god. Heart pounding yo.
Two episodes left in the season, and now that's out of the way I literally cannot wait for the next big character death ....

What do you think that whole beetle squashing was meant to symbolize? Was that a self-referential kind of nod to the fact that GRRM seems to take great pleasure in destroying characters over and over and over?

it means quite literally nothing and was just useless script. wasn't in the book and added absolutely nothing to the story. unless they were referring to how his head was gonna pop like a beetle (although I remember it being a broken spear in the book)

Nah, it was pretty true to the book, down to how Clegane corrected the order of what he did, followed by crushing Oberyn's head like a grape.

Tyrion will find a way out I bet. He still has a few friends who are willing to help him, I believe.
I think it was Tyrion just musing on how futile life is at what was potentially the end of his own.
I really don't like The Mountain now. That guy sucks. Absolutely brutal to confess like that while literally crushing Oberyn's skull.
Also don't think it was a good move for Daenerys to send Jorah away. It's rash decisions like that that may bite her in the ass in the end.

I interpreted it as a comment on how some men have an innate need to kill and conquer. It later shows him releasing the bug he captures showing his character..
I could be reading to much into it but overall I thought the scene was not necessary

That was friggin disgusting, and yes those screams are going to ruin my nights for many many nights. I love how they kept most of the lines from the book, the passion of the Red Viper.
I hope they do reaction videos like they did for the Red and Purple Wedding.

I did miss those shots. If The Mountain does end up dying, does Tyrion still get killed? If a trial by combat comes out as a draw and both champions die, does the person still get sentenced to death?

The Mountain "died" second, so yes Tyrion will still be sentenced to death.
