Yes, mainly because it gets a lot worse about halfway through. Books 2 and 3 are the best, followed by 1, while books 4-5 are sort of lame. So if you were to start halfway through you'd miss out on the best stuff.

I love me the second half of ADWD. Even that storyline over in Essos is interesting at that point.

Nah it was that little kid that was at Castle Black in the show, just as Ygritte and Jon gaze into each others eyes for the first time since she shot him with some arrows.

ok. In the books they don't say who killed her and left it open as to whether Jon may have even shot her himself. And he never makes eye contact with her, he's still injured and up in a tower shooting arrows down at them.

All in all it was great. A little rushed as you can draw something out longer in a book than in a tv show. The siege actually lasts for several days, not just one night.
Pip and Grenn don't die in the books but that's what happens when characters are removed for the sake of tv. It will be interesting if they take us back to the wall in episode 10, I'm certainly excited if they do. Its a good spot to leave the season.

Jon literally said the siege isn't over, which was why he left to find Mance Rayder. "They'll attack again tonight, we can only hold them off for one or two days maybe" (not quoting verbatim(. I'm assuming this isn't quite over yet and they'll return to the wall to at least cap off the season/foreshadow what will come next season.
As someone who has not and probably will not read the books I thoroughly enjoyed that episode and the overall flow of this season in general.
Does anyone have a count on how many times the show has focused on one area for an entire episode? Has this happened even once before? I kind of liked it this way although I wouldn't expect it to happen every week.
It's amazing that back to back we get these crazy good and exciting episodes, you expect shows to have a down note after something like the Viper and the Mountain, but not here. Anyone who's been feeling "meh" about this season and the stuff at the wall should have nothing to complain about at this point (besides bitching about how the show is not the "same", which is just pissing in the wind at this point…the show stands up on it's own).

Yeah pretty much, they did what they could with the characters they had. I love Alliser being badass, he's a dick but a badass none the less. Slynt hiding was fucking classic.
Mag the Mighty busting through the gate was a good nod to book readers too.
I for one found the rappeling while shooting arrows bit insanely badass.

It happened only once with the same producer on the Battle of Blackwater Bay, in Season 2.

Nah, if they don't have "Edd, Fetch me a block" in the show, book readers will tear show directors a new one. That is one of the most loved lines in that whole series. They've done good keeping it pretty close to the books. You saw all the book readers bristle at "Your Sister" instead of "Only Cat"
I was like eagerly awaiting his arrival too. I was like oh it must be in the last minute.
Series Finale is going to be badass, if they don;t keep it close to the books my heart will sink like a stone.
awesome episode, but not how i remember/envisioned the battle going down in the books at all. favorite scenes - when the giant's arrow goes through the watchman and sends him flying off the top of the wall....awesome. and when they release the anchor thing on the chain and sweep all of the climbers right off the wall....then they show just the hand and forearm still attached to the ice axe.
i can't wait for next week's episode. i predict awesome. this whole season has been fucking epic. not too often a show has continuous back to back to back epic episodes. can't believe the season is almost over though and we'll have to wait a whole 'nother year. fuck. come out with book 6 already.....
J.D.Really? Of the major things that could be included in next week's episode, I don't think any of them are predictable.
The reveal at the wall is predictable , the signs point to it, and without revealing anything before next week I'll say there are some good threads on ASOIAF Reddit pointing to it not being a surprise.
I'll post it next Monday.
That being said, every single other event is a surprise.
Don't get me wrong, GoT is the best show ever, but I'm starting to get a little annoyed with how much the storyline jumps around from person to person and leaves out people in each episode. The characters were all pretty connected when the show first started but now everyone is in a different place and it drags the story out a little by not even touching on certain people in some episodes. Just me being picky I guess.
Last night's episode was epic though. I can't believe there is only 1 episode left, I feel like there is so much more that needs said/done before it's over.
Episode was dope, looking forward to the finale. 66 min runtime supposedly, too, which is encouraging considering how many things I can imagine all of us want to see
