What's up guys, I know ns is pretty anti-religion but I thought it'd be cool to have you guys ask whatever you want and I'll do my best to give you guys accurate responses. I'm LDS but I have a bit of a nuanced approach to religion so we may have more in common than you think. It'll be cool if we get some legit questions in here but it is nsg so I'm prepared for the worst!

No haha whoever started that rumor is way off base. Anything farther than kissing will technically warrant repentance. In other words, you would face nearly equal repercussions for "soaking" as you would for actually doing it, so I have no idea why anyone would do so.

What reason do you have for believing Joseph Smith was divinely inspired when (I think we could both agree to this) there are so many false prophets out there? What reason do you have for accepting Joseph Smith while rejecting L Ron Hubbard?

why do mormons refrain from some things like tobacco and caffeine, but completely ignore others, such as the Word of Wisdom that advises a limited consumption of meat. A good mormon (and a good person) should only eat meat in dire circumstances, when no other options exist to sustain ones health. Which is fat america is literally nowhere.

HAHA, most of America IS in dire circumstances dipshit. People who don't make much money (which relative to you, is everyone) often can't afford to get enough protein in their diet if they are a vegetarian. Poor people get fat because they have limited access to quality food and have to get their calories from the least expensive means, which often means JUNK.

Why don't you start fighting THE SYSTEM in stead of THE VICTIMS. You're not an anarchist, you're an asshole.

The word of wisdom forbids things like tobacco and alcohol. It actually doesn't forbid caffeine, nowhere will you find anything forbidding caffeine, its avoidance is cultural not doctrinal. Everything else like meat, soda things like that are intended to be used with moderation. The word of wisdom is really just "everything in moderation". Should you eat mcdonalds every day and drink soda every day? Probably not. However, fairly regular use is ok.

wait. are you seriously trying to tell me that plant-based protein is MORE expensive than meat? that is totally not true. It's much cheaper to cook at home, AND eat out if you are eating veg. Next time you are at a restaurant, look at the vegetarian dishes. They will almost certainly be cheaper.

The only time eating vegan costs more is if you are buying the prepackaged foods like this

That's because the vegan stuff just also happens to be the "luxury" processed foods. It doesn't compete with the cheapest shittiest processed "foods".

If you are cooking meals at home, you cannot cook cheaper than vegan.

although I will concede that some people have geographic limitations when it comes to accessing healthy food.

Healthy food is not expensive, hell if you have a yard you can even grow it yourself, but it's sometimes not easy to find. I am aware that there are large, urban "food deserts" in the US where people simply live too far away from fresh produce or farmers markets, etc. I have heard people say they have to take like 30 min bus rides to get to the grocery store, and pass many fast food restaurants on the way. That's fucked and it needs to change.

I am privileged enough that I can walk from my place to a grocery store with fresh produce in like 2 minutes. In fact I have never lived outside of walking distance from a good grocery store. Sometimes they are the expensive "local" ones instead of supermarkets, but nonetheless they are there.

However, saying that eating vegan is expensive is just 100% wrong. How much does a meal from mcdonalds cost? I'm pretty sure I could make a totally balanced vegan meal for less. At the very least I GUARANTEE could make one that's better for you than mcdonalds.

there is nothing funnier than seeing a drunk mormon.

the best one was this guy who drank punch without knowing it had alcohol. I guess mormons have punch without the booze? Anyways once he had a few he realized what he had done and then freaked out a bit, but then he basically just said "fuck it" and kept drinking (probably due to the fact he was already drunk). Either way I think that was probably one of the most fun nights of his life for him.

also are mormons allowed to have sex?

Why? Fulfillment. I realize all those things are fun but surely you'll agree with me that there's more to life than getting high. I can only speak for myself, but I wouldn't want my happiness to be dependent on a substance.

sure I agree with this. but I also wouldn't want be happiness to depend on a bunch of fairy tales and lies. I would rather figure stuff out for my self instead of blindly following a bunch of BS written by some dude 200 years ago.

To me, being religious would be a shallow and pathetic life. I feel to sad for the people who never really think about the awesome and deep questions about our universe, because they believe in the simple answer that "god did it". I am sometimes angered when I see parents teaching religion their kids, it really strips away that sense of awe and wonder that children have. But I can't blame the parents, because they too have been raised this way.

All I can say for sure is that i'd rather be intoxicated all of the time than religious. Both would suck, but at least being stoned would be closer to reality than the mind of a religious whacko.

Good question. I honestly haven't really done family history work. I know that my parents have quite a bit of stuff but I've never really looked into it. As far as heritage goes, we're not really related to any early church members, only John Adams haha.

No, it's the kind of thing that if you've never tried it you won't feel like you're missing out, to experience that stuff but then never try it again would be hard. Drinking is the hardest to avoid I guess just because it's everywhere, parties, dorms, friends houses etc.

Because they believe it is the word of God. I believe it is too for the record, I just don't think I have a right to hold other people to it within the political sphere. It's really a difficult issue, people sincerely believe they are right and feel the responsibility to uphold what they believe. Alternatively, many mormons are really conservative with or without their belief in the church.
