What the fuck did you expect? That the general public was going to see what we do and just automatically lose their shit and start paying us millions and millions of dollars to fling our bodies through the sky tied to pieces of wood? I can’t for the life of me figure out why everyone is getting so fired up about Bob Costas saying what he said. Whether or not you like it, that IS exactly what the general public’s opinion is of our beloved sport. No matter how much time each “Olympian” puts in at the gym, how much “training” each of them does, we are still a bunch of jackasses that travel entirely too fast down a mountain, jumping off of mounds of snow and sliding these ridiculous tools attached to our feet on metal obstacles. How does that not sound fucking ridiculous? How do you think Billy Martin from Jacksonville feels about it? How can you possibly be offended that he thinks that way?

The other fact of the matter is: Bob Costas knows more about the history of freeskiing than any of you idiots that are getting mad about it.

Think about it. Our founders were a bunch of loose cannons that were pissed off at the state of freestyle skiing when FIS got involved. They literally MADE UP A SPORT, just like he said. How was he in any way, shape, or form wrong? Go ahead and take the term jackass for the literal definition if you want to, but I believe that it’s somebody that does something completely off the wall. Sometimes they do it just for a reaction, sometimes just for the attention, but mostly because they want to. In my opinion, everyone involved with the shaping and progression of freeskiing into what it is today is a jackass.

Plake was a complete jackass running around with that mohawk.
Shane was a total jackass jumping off of cliffs naked.
Tanner (and I mean this with all due respect) but pretty much everything he does outside of skiing has a level of jackassery.
Henrik, gooning it up with a hockey jersey, backwards goggles, and a pink helmet? Come on.

We are all fucking jackasses. We do ridiculous things because we want to and choose to have them recorded and shown to people. So take your panties, unbunch them, and realize that you all wanted this. If we wanted soooo badly to be put on the Olympic stage flipping and spinning and jumping in the U-ditch, then we should have been ready to be scrutinized. Throw on some Vagisil and deal with it.

No, the reason why we are in an uproar over this is because nobody actually gets it.

Flinging yourself through the air to prove that you have control upon landing is what slopestyle is all about. Not to be an idiot or a showoff or anything compared to the shit that happens in jackass.

You want to compare that to the actual jackassery in our sport? Shane skiing naked and Mike Wilson's insano hucks? Those things are in a whole different dimension as far as I'm concerned. Shane skiing naked on a competition course would be a jackass move. He did it. We love him for it. He got banned from the mountain for being 'next level', not welcomed back to the event or anything for another go, or celebrated amongst the serious community that is the comp scene.

And to compare it directly to jackass... Throwing a triple cork whatever and sticking it is far more (i'm sorry to say) related to gymnastics and figure skating than it is to running through a room full of cattle prods and stun guns, or blowing airhorns on a golf course, or shooting a bottle rocket out of your ass.

There's a reason why we have the joke on here that says "(subject) is now aerials".



... you want a JACKASS sport, Bob Costas? How about SKELETON. Flinging yourself head first at 80mph down an ice chute on razorblades with just a 1mm lycra suit protecting you? I mean, remember the dude who actually died doing it? That shit is ACTUAL jackass. And by that level, it's also fucking BADASS. Which is the REAL term he should have used to describe what we do.

That's the real problem. The term Jackass? He might as well have said "borderline idiotic" or something. If he said 'badass' or 'incredible' or 'extreme' or 'next-level' that would have been far better recieved, not only by us, but also his viewers.

Bob costas is 61... do many people in the mid to elderly population have any idea on the current progression of new age sports? Just because some outdated old man said that slopestyle was like "jackass" does not mean that everyone in the world thinks the same way. I can understand how someone who has been commentating such a homogeneous event for years can be slightly butt hurt when a new sport they have know idea about gets added to the bill. Obviously he has an underlying agenda and i definitely do not think he is the man..

honestly i thought it was pretty demeaning and in know way a representation of the sport.

Freeskiing has been called insane, stupid, immature, etc countless amounts of times but Jim, Johnny, Jamie and their mom while in their rental gear at every ski resort ever who see the idiots in tall tees afterbanging their way into the lift line. If you ask me, to have such a joke of a sport in the Olympics is pretty funny.

I take pride in my skiing and being a damn good skier as im sure most of us on this site do. When someone says what you do is easy, requires no skill and instead just a hightened level of idiocy you should be offended.

This has nothing to do with Henrik barking like a goon. This has to do with how insanely hard it is to land a nose butter triple cork

I'm not disagreeing with you on the skill part. What baffles me is that people with the same mindset, that have no understanding whatsoever of our sport have been belittling and poking at us since day one. I just think it's silly to overreact like a lot of people are doing over something that's been happening this whole time.

Well said Logan ! Any publicity is good publicity! The reference to jackass May be a bit off , but it's the way outsiders prolly view our great sport. To the outsiders who understand, free skiing is and always has been "unconventional" in the eyes of most. But the greats before our time have set a stage to be recognized for the rest of the sporting world. It's happening now, and give it a bit more time, but free skiing will be seen as a bunch of young, extremely talented athletes merging gymnastics and dance with a pair of skis. We all love it and in time, more of the conventional viewers will see it too. Let's keep up the good work and shine on the global stage !

I get where you're coming from Logan, and I think it would be a valid point and not so upsetting if Costas' comments were made by someone who actually had an idea of what freeskiing and snowboard slopestyle is all about.

But the fact of the matter is that in all likelihood he has no idea about McConkey and his legendary jackass antics that we love him for, or Wilsons epic stunts, or Brad Holmes' music video back in Ski Movie One.

Costas didn't make his comments to say that we are rebels and a rad new sport in the Olympics that by and large doesn't agree with the regulations of traditional freestyle and is out to prove a point and show the world what's up.

The jackass comment was not a term of endearment nor was it meant to pay a certain type of respect to freeskiing to those that are in the know. Listen to everything he says and how he says it. He thinks we are bunch of stupid young adrenaline junkies that huck our meat like "jackasses" for the entertainment of others, not an actual sport and lifestyle that takes incredible amounts of skill, dedication and passion to be at the top level in any form, be it filming or competing. That's why people are upset.

so much this, it happens whenever an orange name has a controversial opinion, suddenly that opinion becomes the only right answer. Happened with Into The Mind too.

Now on to my real point, the reason Logan Imlach, esteemed orange name and the current shepherd in this thread, is wrong.

What the fuck did I expect? I expect Bob Costas to at least research the sport he chooses to talk about seeing as that is his job. He is supposed to be an informed commentator and reporter to help the masses understand what is going on in front of them. The average American knows just about nothing involving the olympics, summer or winter. Outside of events that are big on their own (basketball, soccer, tennis, hockey), the public is pretty clueless whether its slopestyle or shot put. Bobs job is to help the public understand the rules, the competitors, and the individual sport as a whole. This is him not doing his job. He is being lazy. The reason the public’s opinion of skiing is that we are a bunch of X-treme adrenaline junkie's living on the edge is a lack of education, and it is Bob’s job to at least begin educating the viewers to the point where they can watch and understand the event, and he does it with every other olympic sport i’ve seen him talk about.

Yes the beginning of freeskiing was a bit jackass, a bit extreme, and pretty dangerous. That is not where we are now. Even if Costas DOES know who Shane McConkey and Glen Plake are, that is not the side of skiing we as a sport have chosen to present to the world. Even people like Henrik understand this, if he was truly a jackass he would be hucking spread eagle backies in the nude during x-games finals, but he’s not. He is doing his best to win a competitive event, and that is the difference between our roots and where we are now. I’m not saying one is better than the other, simply stating the reality of today. Think of skier-x, I don’t recall hearing Costas referring to that as jackass, but its roots are more jackassey than slopestyle. It has grown and matured as a discipline just as slope has.

Will people look at slope and say, “look at those crazed people death-spinning in the air begging to die”? Probably. Should that perspective be coming from a man whose job it is to educate those people? Most certainly not.

I do go ski. I'm not asking for Costas or anyone else for that matter to respect what I do when I ski. I do it for me, for fun, and i won't stop no matter what.

My bigger issue is the disrespect he showed for those that do care, for those that have nutted up to the world's stage. Its a different breed of skier than me, but i respect it. To them skiing is a competitive sport, and they want recognition. What is so bad about that?

They are externalizing their locus of self worth by begging to be validated by some irrelevant old fuck or a world population that sees all Olympic sports as little more than "stunts."

Do you think that uncle joe down the street cares enough about gymnastics to appreciate its intricacies? No, he literally only wants to see a bunch of 25-year-old premenstrual girls throw their body in the air. To ask the population of anything more is pointlessly idealistic.

The world stage is only so big. Sports are compressed, labeled, and sensationalized so they all fit neatly in that box and be relegated to easily consumable pablum. If they weren't, the Olympics would not grab enough revenue to put on these events. What the hell do you expect? Are people going to start boycotting Taco Bell because it isn't authentic Mexican food?

All the bickering I'm seeing over this "issue" makes skiers look like a bunch of whiny 16-year-old girls who desperately want to be told that they're pretty. Costas isn't embarrassing anyone; skiers are embarrassing themselves. Do I care? Nope. But I find it interesting how a group of people (who do seem to care what people think of them) fail to see that they are digging their own hole.

Many athlete's want to be recognized for the work that they do. many people externalize their views of self worth, in fact i would say its part of being human. Caring what others think about you. And asking the population to care more is not a ridiculous question. In 1900 no one in the US gave a single fuck about football, by 1930 it was growing, and today its the most popular sport we have. Soccer is also on the rise here, and the ebb and flow of sports has changed many times, and whose to day our country can't handle that? I really doubt skiing will be the next NBA, but we could use some new exposure and grow to some newer groups of people. The Olympics could at least be a start to that. And I happen to think our sport is amazing and freeing enough it would appeal to millions of people who have never had the chance.

Dude. Why are you even trying to pursue a career in skiing? You seem to hate everything about the industry, so why are you even bothering with it? Just accept that you're jaded and downgrade yourself to ski bum like the rest of us.

Competition park skiing is nothing like it was when the NCAF came around with their fakie to fakie 720's, the mentality has gone full circle back to the days of FIS regulated moguls/aerials. Coaches, team managers, workout and training schedules. If you can't see why top level ski and snowboard slopestyle is (and should) be considered a legit athletic sport, deserving it's place in the Olympics you are so delusional towards what park skiing has become.

I'm just gonna stop now because I have a feeling I'm about to go on an endless rant.

Logan don't hate on skiers that are literally ten times better than you. The only reason why you hate this aspect of free skiing is the fact that you will never ever be as good as some of the top skiers. Im sure gus could slide a rail with one foot like you man. Don't hate on the olympics until you get to that level. you just look jealous. It's like all the skiers that can't get to the same level as Gus or bobby or even walisch just claim they're focusing on "style". Shut up man you're a jackass. Go cry to your mom about this.

Other than fighting, pretty much every sport was made up. So the only issue is Costas trivializing one olympic event while celebrating others. It does seem a bit like a ratings/hype move though. Shaun White has to be second or third at worst, of celebrities that NBC is going to overhype. This comment comes right after Lyndsey Vonn (most recognizable US olympic athlete) drops out of the olympics? I'm just waiting for the Shaun and Bob fireside chat to talk about this fake controversy.

Honestly, i really dont care about what he said about freeskiing. Bob costas is a fucking prick for using his position as a soapbox for liberal politically correct bullshit views and policies. I barely paid attention to what he said about freeskiing, because he isnt worth listening to about anything.

And about our sport being jackass. Last time i looked, we werent getting strapped into porto potties and then getting sling shot in the air. While we do dumb stuff n our sport, comparing it to jackass is not really close.

Tldr:bob costas is a liberal pos that doesnt need to be listened to.about anything.

Some of us know people who actually are trying to make a living skiing, and I honestly wish for them to at least be able to make a reasonable living and live a comfortable life. I know for you this may just be a hobby, and ironically you claiming you don't care and posting about it on an internet ski forum kinda shows you do care, but some others take it seriously, and I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

Onto the point, the lack of money in skiing is a fucking joke, like no seriously it is laughable. The risk vs reward in being a professional skier is so badly one sided that I cringe at how much some pros make in a single season.

Now I could go on and on about it, but the reason why this is a big deal, is because for the first time ever this sport has the opportunity to reach out whole lot more people. That means a whole lot more jobs, a whole lot more money may become invested in this sport if people who have never heard of it enjoy it. But that may not happen, especially if you have some retard Costas informing millions of under negative false-pretenses about the sport.

That's why people give a shit.

I don't give a shit about what people say bob costas deserves jackass award of the year. He might know lots about freeskiings past but he shouldn't say shit that effects the sport because right now it's just starting out and every other sport ever created has been in this stage to. He has no fucking right to say the sport that I love to do more than anything besides girls is "jackass" than really he is just jackass. Logan you are the fucking man, i have much respect for plake, Shane, Tanner, (alot less for edollo and bdog) and although the innovated the sport and gave us what we have today, you are correct, they were just pissed and didn't want anyone telling them how to ski...not much has changed in that sense, when the ski patrol tells me to slow down, almost immediatly do i turn around and ride switch

The thing about Bob Costas is that he conducts all  of his own research into his sports analyitcs. (Unlike most who outsource to experts for there facts and thoughts.)  So his words on slopestyle are purely his opinion because he does not know anything about the sport and he is simply stating what he thinks.  /And opinions are like voices, we all have a separate one. 

I give Costas props for stating what he thinks, rather then regurgitating an expert and not knowing anything that is he repeating in order to look smart.
