What the hell is going on with the media and winter weather? Naming winter storms, calling things "Polar Vortex", and generally scaring people every time there is a threat for an inch of snow. I think that it is fear mongering to boost ratings but I could be wrong. Where I am from the "Polar Vortex" is just called winter.
It is no longer called a snow storm or rain showers. Everything is now a "Weather Event." As if every time it rains its a fucking monsoon that you cant go out in.
same reason the media always tries to make it sound like the world economy is going to fall apart, nobody is going buy a newspaper with the headline "Everything going great, nothing to worry about" and almost everyone will buy a newspaper with the headline "Everything is awful, tons to worry about"
the whole idea to start naming winter storms has done nothing but freak people out more. a few years ago, we didn't have all these stupid names and everyone just went on with their daily lives
it is a conspiracy between The Weather Channel and grocery chains to sell more food by freaking people out that they are going to starve in a storm that has 5 inches
I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that naming storms helps the general public take them more seriously. so people wouldn't just dick around and get their shit tossed when they lose power for a week or whatnot.
OP you are clinically retarded. Polar Vortex is a longstanding scientific term for a documented weather phenomenon that is always present at the planet's pole. Occasionally an element of this vortex separates from the main body of the weather pattern and travels south. The recent weather patterns in the US are one such instance. The media is calling the weather patterns Polar Vortex because it is a polar vortex, not because they just arbitrarily decided to name them.
I remember last winter they named one in feb and said everyone out in it would die. We said YOLO and drove to pittsburg pa and ann arbor mi for some shows. My buddy was getting the updates on the drive there and back to ny. Like most things it really wasn't that wild and we didn't die.
Don't be shitty, the point of the thread is that the media blows these weather events out of proportion. It is important to inform people about bad weather but the level the escalate it to is ridiculous
I'm not sure what context you heard "polar vortex" in but that is a real phenomena and consequently the reason for the ozone hole in the southern hemisphere during their summer i.e. our winter.
Sorry that I am not up on my meteorology, I have other stuff going on and didn't investigate about a Polar Vortex. I wrongly assumed it was made up, however I am more taking about the generally over hyped tone the media takes with winter storms. Naming them is ridiculous and I think the media needs to take a more relaxed and informative approach to presenting it.
