What would it cost (per member) for a year of ad free content?

I'm seriously wondering this, because people have thrown around a lot of numbers ( mousseau apparently said 75k worth of revenue is made a year through ads), but to be honest I am more willing to spend my money, rather than time.

The 15 second ad for a 30 year clip is ridiculous so I've turned back on my ad block. I saw in another thread how outraged people were about ad block, frankly I don't give a fuck, the video ads could be fine if they switched them up, but the same thing repeatedly made me say enough is enough.

I'm fine with the side ads, but if there was a way to buy some times worth of ads so I don't have to watch them, I'd be interested.

He said that's how much ns loses per year because of ad block. I'm interested to see if they can shed some light on some realistic numbers though.

IMO I would be willing to spend a LITTLE MONEY so I don't have to watch some stupid ad. Based on the responses from the other thread, other people are upset enough about it, as am I.

Well, how about you pull out mommy's credit card and donate, THEN turn on adblock. Your conscience is free, NS makes some money, everyone is happy.



Or you could donate, NOT use adblock, and show some appreciation for the NS crew and well of a job they do with this fucking awesome website.

Very valid point - interesting too. I don't really mind the ads but some numbers would be awesome, although I doubt the NS staff can share anything.

I'd put money that you're younger than I am and you're actually dependent on mommy and daddy, so fuck off. Both of us can be as condescending, but that gets no one anywhere. The donation thing is valid, but I don't see that as a replacement to the idea I'm bringing up, though it probably is time I donate, considering I've been on here for 6 years or so.

Also. It is 15 seconds. Technology has destroyed humanity. Have we gotten so impatient that 15 seconds of our day can't be watching an ad? I used to complain, I get that they can get annoying, but in what way does it actually hinder your life in any way? It doesn't and once people realize that they will be able to deal with a hint of advertising on a killer website.

Every 240 videos is an hours of your life. Every 120 videos is half an hour. Every 60 videos is 15 minutes.

I watch maybe 2 videos per day (average, some days 0 some days up to 10) so OH NO out of 2-3 hours of my 8,765 hours per year is "lost"....

Its only lost if you're a puppet and sit there and stare at your screen when it plays, look up something useful online, check out photos then POOF wasted time is now productive time. You kids are ludacris.

It used to be if the video was under 30 sec you didnt get an ad, I think I remember seeing recently that jason/chris were looking into why it was happening.

Basically, I don't need to address any point of yours, because the issue you speak of isnt how it normally is and I believe they're fixing it.

What the fuck are you all mad about? Theres a problem with the ads that SOME PEOPLE, NOT EVERYONE are angry/upset/annoyed/however you want to call it and i suggested a solution.

I simply brought up a question on how much it would cost, cause no, I don't want to watch ads, no matter how many or how long of videos I am watching. But yes, I am willing to pay to have this privilege. So why are you bitching about me thinking up a way to make all parties happy, all parties being myself (or anyone in my position or mindset about the ads) and the NS crew happy. If there was a way to pay to bypass ads, YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO IT, go ahead and fucking watch the ad. I liked how Miomo put it, cause its a bit of my thinking.

You watch 2 videos a day? Haha I fucking doubt that, considering I waste my time on NS during the day and watch more videos than that, and you are everywhere on here. You make videos, I'm sure you watch other peoples videos, I mean you're even a mod for christs sake. Plus I'm also not gonna go, oh 15 second ad, better get back to that internship application... If I'm trying to do something productive, believe me, the last place I'm at is NS. I'm not trying to call you out on how much time you spend on here, cause I am guilty too, but don't play it off like that.

Would love to hear a response from someone credible, even if its just shutting me down on the idea.

this would be GREAT. Also would tie in well to the donation system. Maybe an option for getting rid of video ad's and a more expensive option for all ads, and it turn for different lengths of time.

The ONLY reason I don't want to donate is I really don't see the point giving money to a for profit website that has the backing of a pretty large media corporation. If i got something in return, say no ads, I would whip out mommy's visa as fast as I could. Or if it was an independent site that really relied on member donations.

Ok fine I'll think out loud from the admins of NS, from my perspective

Jason- Alright Doug what are we going to do about adblock. Its getting insane, and we're really losing money now. We have to address it.

Doug- Well I think its pretty sad that our members can't handle watching 15 second videos and looking at banner ads. Don't they know thats how we make money?

j- I'm sure some of them do, but most of them either don't know or don't care. They're so used to an ad free, instant internet that anything different is too much for them.

j- What do we do about it? Maybe let the adblock users know what their affect is on our bottom line? Lets make a red banner that pops up if we detect adblock. Just to let them know.

d- Sure. Done. So now its been a few months and there's still a ton of adblock users, and the members seem pretty split on whether or not they can handle ads.

j- So like it or not, we need to find a real solution. Do we block adblock users as a whole? that could really kill our current and new user numbers. Maybe offer subscription content or ad-free subscription system? Adblock is here to stay, so we need to find a way to not be hurt by it, and still offer the best skiing website we can.

I know that the short videos with ads is an issue being fixed, ive said that 100 times. Less than 6 months ago if a video was under 30 seconds or something, there wasnt an ad.

I think you meant run newschoolers, but the kids that ruin this site are people like skierman, (who I don't even come close to comparing you to for the record, you consistently contribute useful information and content and he "trolls" and posts the dumbest and most negative stuff possible)

Pretty sure Pinkbike doesn't run ads on their videos or am I wrong on that? That also is a free website, as are a good majority of sites that you can watch videos from. I really don't know why a solution I'm bringing to the table blows your mind. I'll just go my merry way using adblock, which honestly I'll do until theres another solution. Whether that still blows your mind or not, I don't really care.

And while you use adblock, you're not supporting a website, that is free to use and costs you 15 seconds of your life to watch a video.

Im not acting high and mighty at all, I just don't understand why you and others think you're entitled to a video experience at no cost to you. Vimeo is the only legit large website that doesn't run ad but thousands of people pay for vimeo plus/pro so its a bit different. If NS ask you to pay $70 a year for access, you might say yes but 95% of people would freak out.

I still don't think you're seeing this for what it is. It doesn't matter if you we're right, wrong, or 15 year old bitch made kids. We can't handle 15 second video ad's to see free skiing videos made by professionals such as yourself, and amateurs. NS relies on its memebers (and non members) to watch videos and watch the ads before those videos. So if too many of those viewers are not watching those videos with ads, you need to find a way to make up the revenue, one way or another, or accept that you will make that much less revenue.

You can either find a way to make it in a different way, or force people to watch the ads. Vimeo has chose the "Diffrent Way" option. NS has yet to really decide, youtube has chosen to make less revenue. So EHV, you wise leader of skiing, what do you suggest? Which option should NS choose? Currently simply arguing that we're all bitchmade newgen turbodouches who can't handle ad's isn't going to help NS, and in turn you.

I'm sorry you struggle so hard to see the bigger picture.

Well that isn't supposed to happen. It is supposed to be at least 30 seconds before an ad displays. There are new updates coming next week so hopefully this is corrected. I know that they used to not pop up under 30, i've never gotten one on something under 30.

what's the link to the video that was doing it?

I don't mind the ads, and I love supporting revenue for NS, BUT sometimes I do get frustrated because I don't have the best internet connection and for some reason ads on NS struggle to load and I can't get to the video so I just don't watch. Once I get to the video it plays fine. On youtube ads load fine and it's a breeze, plus I can skip. That's my one complaint.

I'm not sure about you but I've seen the Target ad so much I almost want to throw my computer at the wall every time I see it. It's not that I can't handle a 15 second ad, it's that I can't handle the same deafening, seizure inducing, cringing, steaming pile of excrement that I now see the Target ad as.
