Actually it's mining
And to answer BO_ I had to climb down the emergency escape way halfway down into the mine to meet up with the cage (basically big ass elevator) which was rolling a 16000lb roll of cable down the mine shaft and securing it as they went. 3 more of these to do over the next 3 days. Me and two others need to climb down to meet them to pull off some cable using an electric winch and cut it. I wish I had pictures of this all. I have cool job.
And Matt, is that actually your job? I've seen that video before. How tall are they, I didn't watch it again and I'm sure it says in the video.
Fuck that's pretty crazy, I climbed a 110m ladder on a stack at work once, had to do it with an SABA pack on. Honestly hard as fuck, thought i was in good shape and tried to hammer off the first 50m in one shot, nope, made it about 20m before needing a rest. did you have the cable slider fall arrestor?
Damn that wouldn't be fun with SCBA on. This ladder is straight up and down, but each flight overlaps half the width of the other flight, so there is landing to take a break (i couldn't cause I had to get down to the level before the cage and the other guys got there) you could potentially fall the whole distance down if you got a bonding motion going from side to side.
It's super sketchy thinking that before they sunk the second shaft, if hoist 1 went down, this was the only way to clear the mine in an emergency. Being in construction the mine was often at full capacity of 225 guys 500m underground.
This mine has also flooded 3 times causing them to have to essentially restart. It's technically been in construction since 1986, and hasn't produced a single tonne of ore!
That's crazy that it hasn't produced and they're still pumping money into it? Is that uranium city?
When I had to climb it wasn't SCBA it was the one with the hose attached (cant remember the name) And it was only the second Half (55m). The hose was fucking heavy by the end haha. I also accidentally dropped the rope we were using to haul up our gear once I got to the top and had to climb back down and up again haha.
