Hubble Ultra Deep Field aka blow you little mind...

Us humans, pointed our greatest telescope at the darkest part (or what we thought) of the night sky to reveal the most astounding discovery we have ever made (or so I believe). Every pinpoint of light (with exception to a few stars in our own galaxy) is a galaxy containing between 100 million to 10 billion stars in each one. The Hubble Extreme Deep Field was Released on September 25, 2012 and it took 10 years to compile the images and shows galaxies from 13.2 billion years ago. The exposure time took approximately 23 days. Blow your mind...Imagine the infinite possibility...

The HUDF used to be the deepest image of the universe ever taken and it will be used to search for galaxies that existed between 400 and 800 million years after the big bang.

In order to understand this thread fully you must know some basic astronomy and physics such as the speed of light and the proposed expansion rate of the universe...

Every galaxy you see here probably no longer exists as we see them here, and have probably been swallowed by black holes or combined into even larger galaxies. Every star within every Galaxy pictured had the possibility to harbor a planet with liquid water on its surface in the habitable zone of its system. Infinite other realities were created and then destroyed over the billions of years.

To think it all is the evolution of hydrogen bound by some mathematics and laws really makes you wonder to the depth of human cognition.

Repost or whatever, it should be just as epic as the last time you saw it if you truly comprehend the significance.

I don't understand, instead of just telling us there is a deeper significance beyond the universe being big/old, why don't you tell us what the significance is?

As far as i can tell, all of this is in "no shit, sherlock" territory.

Universe is big? no shit, sherlock

universe is old? no shit, sherlock

other planets could have had life before earth? no shit, sherlock

humans may not be that advanced compared to other pre-existing life forms? no shit, sherlock

I actually agree with you. Don't get me wrong. I love this shit. Like to the point where it is what I want to do as a career.

But the universe being big is just something that I think we can't comprehend. I think the thought that the universe is infinite is just crazy, and has all kinds of crazy implications, but as humans we can't really comprehend these things.

I feel like conversations about how big the universe is are often very shallow. I would much rather talk about how a star works, or how we can map galactic magnetic fields, or why the baryon content of the universe is inconsistent with a matter-dominated universe, etc. Those conversations to me are a lot more deep than the "stoner phillisophical" conversations we had while lying on the beach when I was a teenager.

When you get into physics, the most interesting stuff happens on scales either much greater or much smaller than humans can comprehend. The scales we deal with in particle physics is as far away from us as the scales we deal with in astronomy/cosmology. So if studying the universe makes you feel small and insignificant, then why wouldn't studying particle physics make you feel huge and complex and super important? Maybe it does. But for me this is all the realm of drunken bar conversations and shit. There is nothing deep about it.

I suggest you use a psychedelic drug to unlock the potential nature of your consciousness.

I laid out all the pieces for you to ponder on the deep significance on your own. Obviously you can't quite grasp the depth of what I am trying to convey. You need to use your imagination, like I said before. You are currently shrouded in ignorance because you have no true imagination.

Don't limit your mind to see these infinitely complex things as basic things. "Universe is big? no shit, sherlock" Your words might mean something different to you than they do to me, but your definitions of Universe and Big must be very different and limited from my own. you may be able to conjure such a phrase but if you are not imagining the implications your existence reveals nothing.

To start your imagination you must have quite a well rounded understanding of the human perspective on science and mathematics. You must integrate within your head all that you have ever learned.


I'll try and give you some more hints to try and spark your so limited imagination...

We are on a planet orbiting one star among three hundred billion stars in our galaxy alone, and when we look out as deep as we can into the cosmos and all we find is seemingly infinite galaxies each containing billions of other stars, the possibilities become infinite. I'll say that again...infinite! Additionally, literally everything is energy (you might think again no shit sherlock) but really ponder deeply on this fact.

Just think of every element for example. They are the evolution of hydrogen over billions of years each having been created inside a star by nuclear fusion. If that isn't significant for you then your concept of reality is very skewed.

Then if you ponder on the sheer complexity of literally everything that has arisen here on Earth, of everything that we have ever known to exist, your imagination should begin to unfold the infinite potentiality of the cosmos. If your brain simply cannot comprehend what I am trying to say, I feel terribly sorry for you, as it is quite a beautiful awe of cosmic unity that I can feel from our infinite existence.

Hope that helped you generate some inspiration for your imagination, as I have only scratched the surface for you and everyone else reading this thread. But you must unlock the potential in your mind to venture into the unknown and imagine the different worlds and realities occurring simultaneously to ours in this very moment.

Well put my friend but, I differ with a few of your statements. The universe being big is something that I think we can comprehend, as I have begun to comprehend the sheer immensity and infinite potentiality it holds. I can't quantify many of the things that I can think of, but I can comprehend as vast amount of the infinite using my imagination.

Yes studying physics can become quite the paradox, studying astronomy makes us feel so small and insignificant, yet studying particle physics would make one feel massive and very significant.

I disagree deeply that there is nothing deep about it. I feel it is the most deep and real thing we can possibly comprehend.

I absolutely agree. Same reason I think it's silly when people say that the big bang can't be what happened because something can't come from nothing. They say that because the human brain can't comprehend the idea of nothing, so obviously we can't comprehend the idea of something coming from nothing, but that doesn't make it impossible.

Of course everything op talks about is endlessly fascinating, but he makes it seem like these revelations, that the universe is infinitely large and complex, are brand new, which they absolutely are not, which is why i'm confused as to why he thinks all our minds should be blown by this. I've known for a long time that the universe is bigger and more complex than I could ever hope to begin to grasp, all these new pictures do is provide more evidence for this. Though they perhaps further emphasize the previously well-known mind-blowing nature of the universe, they are not in themselves mind-blowing.

I remember growing up and thinking, "wow every one of those dots in the sky is a star" and being blown away. But looking up and thinking now, "wow every one of those dots is BILLIONS of stars, BILLIONS of years ago." That's mind boggling. That really clear image of the ultra deep field... If that shit doesn't get you thinking then you aren't appreciating what you as a human are looking at.

They actually are colored somewhat like that bro...the images that they take aren't in color, but but looking at the spectral class of the light being emitted from each galaxy we can match the average elements in each galaxy to a corresponding color. It is somewhat of and estimation but the colors we give them are actually very close to their actual color.

I'm not saying the infinite possibilities of the universe aren't fascinating. I'm saying this is something i've known for a long time, and am curious why these pictures specifically, which seem to only support the infinite possibilities of the universe (which, again, we have known for a long time), are themselves mind-blowing.

If the only significance of these pictures is that they support the idea that the universe is full of infinite possibility, then, i'm sorry to say, they aren't particularly mind-blowing, no matter how incredible the infinite possibilities of our universe may be.

And please, don't question the limits of my imagination.

Qm is lame. I remember reading about the deep field in my astronomy textbook in college. My college happened to have pretty much the premier astrophysics dept in the world. I have watched 3 of the ast phys dept profs on science channel programs over the years. They dont fuck around at ptown

You imagination is truly limited if these images do not blow your mind. Every single time I gaze upon these pictures I am mind-blown and awestruck all at once, and I guess that is where we differ.

I as well have known these facts about our universe for a long time, which is nothing to brag about.

If you really thing that infinite possibility is not mind blowing then you are really limiting your potential.

I am not trying to show that I am smarter or that my brain is superior to anyone's, I am merely trying to spread the knowledge in hope of sparking imagination in others and blowing peoples mind as these images do for me. If your mind is not blown by these it is your decision alone to not be affected by these and to limit your thoughts and imagination, I respect that as your choice but I can't help but be terribly sorry for you.

when you look up, almost every one of those dots is one (or two) stars and less than 1000 light years away. so the light you see is probably only a couple hundred years old at most.

Unless you are looking up at a galaxy, or using a powerful telescope or something.

Here is a mind blowing thing. To the photon of light, it makes the journey from the star to your eye in an instant.

Yeah all the stars we can see with our eyes are around 1,000 light years away, but I think he was referring to the hubble deep field.

The fact that from the photon's perspective the journey is an instant is the most mind boggling thing in the whole thread.


Is that because of relativity??

yes. Of course you would have to assume that a single photon makes the journey without being absorbed and reemitted.

photons ALWAYS travel at c. That means photons do not "experience" time. Light can travel slower than c, but photons cannot.

I guess I should clarify this. If the photon is absorbed and remmited, it would not really be the "same photon". It's not like the photon would go a distance, hit an atom and stop and chill for a bit, then get back on its way. The photon would hit the atom, cease to exist, and then sometime later a new one would be emitted. Therefore the sum of the "time experienced" by the photons along the way would still be zero.

So the original statement I made is good enough I guess.

when I say light, I mean an ordinary beam of light that delivers enough energy quanta that overall it appears to be continuous.

Light is made of photons, but it also is a travelling electromagnetic wave. But the electric field itself is quantized and photons fall out as a result of that. I can't really explain this any better on NS.

With such low gravity, do you think snow would even fall to the surface though? Might just float around in the atmosphere. A whole lot of fog, ice crystals, and steam?

Either that, or it would fall slower and maybe result in powder lighter than anything we've seen on Earth.

Or you know, whatever. It'd be nice if there was another intelligent race out there ripping mountains on skis.

Also, gents, if you want your mind blown, think about this- everything in the universe has a 13.7 billion light year view of the horizon. That means that the farthest star that we can see in our own cosmological horizon, that star can see another 13.7 billion light years further and so on. So when we say the universe is 13.7 billion light years in radius, thats not really correct. Thats just as far as any entity can see from its own location. The universe itself may be infinite in size
