All Mountain =/= Big Mountain

You sound like fucking retards when you talk about skiing around your resort, and calling it big mountain. If you rode a lift(Excluding Agui de Midi, certain aerial trams, and Marti) then the odds are it's not big mountain.

If you're posting from the Midwest then it certainly is not big mountain.

Even if you skinned there, it's probably still not big mountain skiing.

If you ski Whitefish resort on Big Mountain, you get a pass.

If something you have to skin/hike to access doesn't count as big mountain to you, then what does? Helicopter or plane access only?

I'm with you on this. On the same note - I both love it and find it very frustrating when people say some hills have "backountry terrain" or some shit. facepalm.

Or call anything out of bound big mountain. Just because you aren't on a groomer doesn't mean you're skiing big mountain. I've done very few lines that I would put in the big mountain category, and I'd say that anyone who even uses the term 'big mountain' probably has no idea what they are talking about.

Rope and harness (ice axes and crampons, etc) involved? Real sluff management? No fall zones, serious overhead hazards and terrain traps at all times during your line?

These are the things that make a line go into the realm of 'big mountain'.


Could just be my opinion though.

So to me pillow zones aren't big mountain. mini golf zones aren't big mountain. any bowl or wide open slope...

When I hear the term 'big mountain' I expect a line with some real technicality to it - something that requires a lot of thought and respect. Lines of high consequence.

Sure, but there is also tons of huge shit people skin up. For example, Seth Morrison and Jeremy Jones in their recent movies, as they've moved towards relying on themselves to get new peaks instead of helicopters.

To say anything you skin is by definition not big mountain is just fucking stupid

I define big mountain as going off cliff bands or doing crazy descents. I feel like that can be within the resort.

Typically when your going back country you are not really skiing much big mountain due to avalanche risk / risk of a wilderness injury. That would be mostly powder skiing.

okay now youre really overstepping..

stuff that requires ropes, axes etc is ski mountaineering

real slough management, no fall zones, and terrain traps "at all times" are possible aspects of big mtn skiing. but to claim that one or all of them has to be present has nothing to back it up beyond machismo and skier snobbery

it's like if you were a rail skier and you made a thread claiming street rails weren't truly urban unless they were within X feet of a building, didn't have stairs, were covered in snow, blah blah blah

No, most don't even meet the 2000ft requirement to be considered a mountain. But it is decent Back country

also when you said any wide open slope isn't big mtn my eyes rolled so hard they broke. i'd love to see you stare down a big wide open alaskan face and tell me with a straight face that it doesnt count as big mtn

Maybe, maybe not. It's all opinion as to where you draw the line between what is and isn't big mountain. We can all agree that meadow skipping isn't big mountain right? We can all agree that riding an Alaska face with no fall zones, terrain traps, and sluff management is big mountain. As to where you draw the line is up to interpretation in the end.

If I am skiing a line that has a 20ft cliff (not mandatory) where I can stop at the top to check it out and if I don't stomp the landing, no big deal - I personally wouldn't consider that in the realm of big mountain.

To me 'big mountain' comes with some consequence and some forethought as to how to piece together the run. If I drop in and just wing it as I go, I don't consider it to be big mountain.


This whole thread is cutting hairs and I think everyone should just look at it more to induce thought than to draw an actual line in the sand. Maybe 'big mountain' is like 'freeskiing' - it has nothing to do with what you ski or how you ski it, but what you're mentality is while doing it? If so, all you really need to be a 'big mountain' skier is a full face helmet and a game face.

I think all these terms are stupid if you want my honest opinion. Just call it all skiing and be done with it.

This thread is riddled with fuckery. This is my understanding of what things are called:

Park - anything involving a man made park
All mountain - something only ever used to describe a pair of skis
Big mountain - cliffs, steeps, technical lines, pillows
Back country - somewhere remote, removed from lifts, that requires booting or skinning
Side country - using a lift first to access somewhere that requires going through a gate and booting/skinning to get somewhere beyond lift access

I'm pretty mystified by what OP is getting at though. Most people don't bother with all of these terms, they just say lets go SKIING.

Also as an aside, where you are located does not define your terrain. People would be surprised to know that Lincoln's Throat on Mt. Lafayette is on par with some of the most difficult terrain in the country. Especially if you ice climb the last few hundred vertical feet.

Wut. Tanner's pillow segment isn't "big mountain" enough for you? It's merely pow-skiing right? According to your stupid definition there is a sliver of skiing known as big mountain that isn't all mountain or pow skiing or mountaineering. Sick. Your ski-peen must be huge.

Well this is perfect you just lost your own thread. They hold the FWT at snowbird on Silver Fox (a trail) and baldy/ the amphitheater (harder to get to but still trails).

Anyone can pretty much ski sliver fox my 10 year girl (nothing against ladies) cousin skis silver fox as a warm up run (obviously not the same exact lines but still).

This was a dumb thread to begin with and now it done.

I would say some of the mountain is considered "big mountain". Big Sky's tram I think is considered big mountain skiing. Whitefish resort is on Big Mountain but barely any of its terrain is true "big mountain" beside a little bit of hell roaring and the rim

I think he means the fact it's called "big mountain" means that (to him) it's ok to call it by its name. He doesn't mean that Whitefish has particularly gnarly terrain compared to anywhere else. I really do like. Whitefish though, hellroaring and east rim are fun as fuck

and? Ive skied some of where they hold the fwt stops and compete in the qualifer events .... some of the cirque, north baldy, silver fox just to name a few . there is stuff at the mountian i ski daily(when we have snow) thats 1000+vert and not a 1000 vert of switch backs and groomers.
