All Mountain =/= Big Mountain

You sound like fucking retards when you talk about skiing around your resort, and calling it big mountain. If you rode a lift(Excluding Agui de Midi, certain aerial trams, and Marti) then the odds are it's not big mountain.

If you're posting from the Midwest then it certainly is not big mountain.

Even if you skinned there, it's probably still not big mountain skiing.

If you ski Whitefish resort on Big Mountain, you get a pass.

today i skinned to the top of Mt.Baker, it would have been easy but i had to rope up over the crevasses. Overall still a dope park day, can't wait until i progress to real big mountains.

i used my night vision goggles so i could ski at sunrise. There was a great jib line, but so many gapers. Where do you big mountain ski? I can't find a big mountain area.

I don't "big mountain" ski. I ski "all mountain" on a big mountain. You are missing the point though. Am I the only one who thinks it's hilarious that kids from the midwest will refer to not skiing in their park as skiing "big Mountain"?

ok yes im just giving you shit. But saying when I skin its still not big mountain? Idk but i've skinned to ski some real BC shit, and some early season mellow ass turns. At what point does it shift from one to the other? Does it have to be pow? Does it have to be x-miles from a chairlift? Hell some mountains ive skied have in bounds terrain that is just as hardcore as many BC lines. Bridger, Revelstoke, Big Sky, all hive in bounds shit that most certainly counts as Big Mountain.

But unfortunately on the photo uploader there is no "All Mountain/Tree Skiing/Cliffs/Ripping It Up" section
Maybe this is something that needs to be updated to avoid future confusion between Big Mtn skiing and Midwest tree skiing.
In all seriousness its a good thread and a good point, maybe should be in site discussion though?

2) i think the snobbiest you should get is demanding there be steeps and a rollover (for example, a lot of people consider the fingers and silverado the only part of squaw that is true big mtn cause they actually have a rollover). i personally see that as needless snobbery, and anything that has cliff bands, couloirs, etc is "big mtn" cause it's pretty obvious that it is just a way to refer to a type of skiing as opposed to groomers, park, urban, whatever

OP is 100% correct.
When you all use the term "big mountain" for simply skiing outside the park or off piste in general, it is the equivalent of gapers claiming to ski park after catching air from a side hit on the side of the blue square.
It is just wrong, uneducated and completely out of place.

Well if a gaper is jumping of of the sides of jumps in the park, they're skiing park. Maybe they aren't as good as you or other people but they're working on it.

Now if someones skiing off piste at say snowbird or alta or squaw or kirkwood or Jackson or Big Sky or Whistler or Alyeska or Kicking Horse, all mountains that are BIG MOUNTAIN and have some gnarly terrain (and weren't mentioned by OP), they're skiing big mountain.

You are correct, all those resorts have what would be considered "big mountain". However ripping around on the trails there does not mean you ski "big mountain". Even going off the trail does not mean you ski "big mountain". If you ski the kind of shit they would hold FWT comps on....then you ski "big mountain".

Just because you're in the BC does not mean it's "big mountain" The majority of BC skiers are meadow skippers.

All mountain sounds stupid too. All mountain is groomers/park/bumps/crud/sidecountry. ALL of the mountain. If you're in the sidecountry or backcountry, call it sidecountry or backcountry.

I agree, but if you just go out of the gate its backcountry. Side country is giving people false sense of confidence, and killing them. Anything that is not avalanche controlled is considered backcountry, cause it can kill you.

I would argue (PARTS) Kirkwood is big mountain, they host a FWT on the Cirque (which lower parts can be skied).  I would'nt say if you go to kirkwood you're riding big mountain but for shredders(me once in a blue moon/good day) it's considered big mountain.  Summit county with the exception of maybe A basin east wall is NOT big mountain.
