Obertauern Trip

This February I am going on a trip with a friend to Obertauern in Austria. I was wondering if anyone has been there and what is it like, if anyone has any tips for things to do there or things that you think I should bring (minus the obvious), and if there is anything that you could suggest for me while I'm there!

It's nearly all above the tree line so take a yellow or amber lens with you for your goggles as well as a darker lens for bluebird days. The park at Obertauern isn't up to much, so if you have transport it's worth making a trip to the Absolute Park at Flachauwinkl or the Planai Super Park at Schladming if you want to ride a good park... both are great parks and within about 20km drive of Obertauern. On flatlight powder days you should jump in the car again and drive down to Altenmarkt and then drive up to Zauchensee, it's got some of the best tree skiing in the Eastern Alps, if not the entire Alps, on a good day it's epic. Regarding other things to do, there isn't much up at Obertauern, but you could hit the Therme Amade in Altenmarkt which has a looping water slide.

Have you been there? I do love to park ski but if I'm in the alps I'm gonna actually ski so how is that at Obertauern. Thanks for the advice it seems like you really know the area.

This post is 100% spot on. I might add if it does snow, get to Zauch early. You won't regret it.

Used to live nearby so I've skied it tons. Obertauern skiing is ok, there's enough there to keep you busy for a couple of days with some steep blacks to be found... yeah it's alright. Zauchensee is only about 10km away, you can see it from Obertauern, that place is a true gem on a pow day.

I am going to be with a friends family so I can't go every different place around (though I really wish I could) but I can probably get one day at Zauchensee, if it doesn't snow a ton is it still good there? Also Ive never been to the alp, never out of the east actually (sadly) so will there be a lot of cliffs at either places? and any woods what so ever?

When our athletes come to visit the area, they love going to Zauchensee for trees, cliffs, and pillows and they will go to Flachauwinkle for park.

Before you do anything anywhere, be sure you know about backcountry safety and have the proper gear that is needed. From one East Coaster to another, this isn't exactly apples to apples.

OP, I wouldn't even dream of venturing into any area you think may be sketchy off piste at all at the moment in the Alps, the snowpack is atrocious. Ruined some touring plans with my new avy gear, but seriously, 5 people died this week in Switzerland in relatively "safe" areas. Things have been breaking off in Switzerland and Austria right next to the piste, huge slab just falls away. Do what @onenerdykid said, get some basic avy stuff/usage before heading out beyond controlled areas.
The weather and snow is shit right now all over the Alps, slush on ice and crud, baDD snowpack, it may be a groomer or park holiday for you. Sorry but it's just how it goes

If you look on youtube there's a few vids showing the free ride skiing at Obertauern. I've not been in 5+ years but i use to really enjoy skiing there.
If you're looking to eat out somewhere special I would highly recommend this little place called Gasthaus Bauer. It's not far from Obertauern, maybe 15min drive but well worth it. If you order this dish called the fuhrmeist? (i have no idea how you spell it) then you get 4 or 5 different cuts of meat in a small wheel barrow, man it's good but hard to finish.
Also get a Germknodel they're real tasty. In fact if you want any more advice on what food to get just hit me up, I'm an expert when it comes to that.
