Im thinking about doing this this summer and I have to sign up for class by tonight to do it. You work over the summer and you can make an insane amount of money (like 20k or something for 1 month shift). Has anyone ever done this before?
I did it for 5 seasons. Its a super good gig for students or ski bums. Ive spent months in New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Colorado, deep backwoods of Montana, all over. Ive worked on engine crews, helitack crews, handcrews, hotshot crews and saw teams so I know quite a bit about the whole spectrum. PM me if you want more info. I would make about 25-30k a summer and would fund my living during the winter so i didnt have to work during school. But you earn the money. It can be hard, extremely dangerous and you basically forfeit your entire summer since youre on call at all times.
If you didnt sign up when your deadline was, you can still apply for federal jobs (forest service, which I highly recommend) thru Avue. Its a pain in the ass site, but its really the only way unless you know someone. But call around, start talking to crew bosses, engine bosses, etc on the phone. Tell them they are interested and get your name out there.
But anyone interested in it can PM me and I will be happy to answer any questions.
These are the best. If I had a volunteer firefighting crew in my town I would join instantly. They are great people to know in your town, and will help you out with anything (house, car, building shit etc.)
Yeah parts of it do, i just dont like being left in muskeg for weeks haha. Hes now one of the head crew leaders of a special rappel attack crew in australia. That job brought him all over.
