What's it like at/around Big Sky?

An opportunity came up that has given me a chance to go to Big Sky next week. I was wondering what it's like out there currently( snow conditions, temps, weather). Also, hows it looking next week. Are there any recommendations of stuff/places to go or see while I'm out there? Oh and we're driving out there from PA because plane tickets are horribly expensive!

i live in missoula, couple hrs away, but all i know is that brigder got 20 inches of cold smoke powder last night , and big sky only got 3 in, kinda wierd, but youll have a fucking blast at big sky either way, snow is in forcast for sure and theres always pockets of fresh to find up there. have fun man ! really fun place to ski !!

Big sky is my local mountain and it's great. Are you skiing just big sky's half or moonlight and big sky? Anyway, they've got great coverage and a sick park for this early on in the season.

Where's a good place to stay? And we're gonna be looking for that powder while we're out there. I hear rocks are a big problem, is that a concern now?

Rocks Arnt a problem. And you kinda have to get lucky if you want a big dump. And there are a lot of condos close to the poma that Arnt terribly expensive. But if your on a strict budget I would stay at the bucks t-4, it's a 10 minute drive from the hill but it's real cheap. And if money isn't an issue stay at the summit. The coverage now is good though, rocks Arnt a problem. But there are a few patches of rocks on the face of libertys but that's really it.

It's always worth it IMO, but you need to know where to go. Right now its cold and deep, and we've got some of the best conditions in North America.

Both Big Sky and Moonlight have AMAZING parks! You should have a ton of fun up there! I know bridger bowl is great because its my home mountain!

Big Sky is a rad place. Cool little town with an epic mountain. Be sure to bring avy gear though. The slackcountry terrain is absolutely astounding. Large AK size lines immediately accessible off the top of Lone Peak.

I dunno where you ski at big sky, but entire upper mountain is pure rocks so if the snow is thin, there are rocks. Challenger always has exposed rocks in places, just don't venture into an untrack field that may or may not be roped off, when the whole mountain is tracked out.

I was there Mid December and the Lone Peak runs all had rocks at the top but once you get passed that wind swept level the snow is amazing! Try not to fuck around on the cat tracks to much cause it's all lined in rocks. Where there are rocks on the lower lifts you can avoid for the most part. The big couloir is worth trying if you can get avy gear and it is pretty well covered throughout.

Super sick mountain! You will ski for 3 days straight and you will still not have skied the entire mountain. Sadly it's really expensive so bring $$$

Challenger is only rocky because it gets raped with wind. The rocks are visible. The tram, bowl, all of Andersite and most other areas are fine.

Stay in a cabin on moonlight if you can afford it, super fun ski in ski out, and you can build kickers and such in the woods right by the cabins.

I grew up in bozeman and I ski 3-5 times a week.

Also, I was the creative mind behind the name basement dweller for NS. I lived in a basement last year but now im second level condo status.

They have some nice condos up there. You'll have a great time!! Ill probably see you up there if you're skiing Saturday and sunday

We're starting our drive Saturday morning and won't get there til Sunday night if everything goes as planned. We plan on skiing mondy-Friday and leaving Saturday sometime.

Rad, Saddle Ridge is a nice spot, it's directly between Moonlight and BS. Hop on Iron Horse and it's left to BS and Right to ML. There's also a fun stash park in the trees off Iron Horse. You'll have a blast dude, I lived in BS for 3 years and miss it every day.

Why not ask this question in regionals?

That aside, Big Sky is fun. The backcountry and slackcountry are sketchball this year and I would be very wary geting into anything steep. http://www.mtavalanche.com

The Saddle Ridge's are very decent. You'll be right above Pony Park for bullshit fun, and you can ski up Iron horse and get right over to the base. Either base actually! Since you're probably buying day passes, you'll have access to the whole mtn.

Bring your probe, beacon, shovel if you want to ski the Big Coulior. The North Summit Snowfield ripped to the ground a little bit back, so I don't think it'll be ready. They've been getting a lot more open off the peak though. Dictators, Dirtbag, Rockville, Gullies. There WILL BE ROCKS. You can mostly avoid them... mostly.

Be prepared for a wide range of temperatures and wind speeds.

Bridger always gets dumped on, not us.

My home resourt is bridger bowl they have been geting insane snow latley! Last saturday thay got 20 inches in 3 hours!

A-Z's were closed last I checked, but Headwaters is open,

The Dictator's chutes are almost all open, never skied them.

Gullies are open, never skied them.
