Buying first boots

Would it be a Gaper thing to do to buy brand new boots after only skiing once before? I'm going again Saturday and hopefully the rest of the season on Saturdays. I'm thinking about getting Technica Cochise 90

No not at all, owning a pair of boots that fits well is very important. Even if you rent skis for a while it will be way more comfortable and faster if you bring your own boots. Look around your town/city for a good ski shop (not a general mall sports store that sells skis) and go see a bootfitter, he or she can fit you for a boot that matches your ability level and foot shape.

Buy a custom foot bed, $180 to $200 may seem like a lot of money, but it is every bit as important as buying a boot that fits the shape of your foot correctly. It may be the single most important thing that you can buy for skiing.

No its not. seriously this is salesman mumbo jumbo, and i sell ski boots for a living.

customs are great, but they arent that much better than a trim to fit if you dont have major issues. the other thing is that a weighted custom bed builds a LOT of arch, if you have a high arch anyways the custom is too much support and will cause instep issues, then you remake it and have less of a heel cup than you would have with the trim to fit in the first place.

I too sell bootfit for a living and what you said really doesn't make all that much sense. If done correctly you should not be creating instep issues, nor have to rework any of the footbed.

You are also talking about people with very good bone structure, which from what I see is normally far from normal.

If you are looking to buy boots, there is a dedicated thread for that:

To the boot-fitters in this thread: the purpose of a footbed is to create the best interface between a foot and the ski boot. That's all. It can be custom or it can be semi-custom. More often than not, if you recommend the custom option you will not be doing anyone a disservice. Let's all try to help people find the best solutions, give them the options, and then let them decide.
