Anyone else see that documentary "Blackfish"? Super well made film that documents killer whales in captivity. Made me hate the human race even more than I already do.
to some degree, even while being an animal fan, the hate on zoos/aquariums/etc is a little overblown.
what i mean is that there are certainly species that can be held in an environment big enough that also resembles their natural habit quite well.
imo, at least to the zoos ive been in in middle europe, the trend goes to animals which are "easier" to handle and enlargen the cages/compounds. furthermore, i think there is now more focus on whether a species is living solitary, in small groups or in bigger flocks and where possible, one tries to recreate that social environment.
the munich zoo is really a good example, the compounds are relatively large and a lot of times you wont even see any animals because they have a lot of space to hide and roam around. innsbruck's alpenzoo is also a good example. vienna not so much imo.
bottom line: i dont think its always animal cruelty when you present animals in zoos, if you provide them with a somewhat close copy of their natural habitat. i mean they get free food and dont have all the hassles of wildlife, so maybe a lot of them wouldnt flee or come back even if given the opportunity. some species that are really complicated, or need big territorries or require social structures which cannot reasonably be copied, shouldnt be held in zoos, and i think that a lot of zoos (at least where i am from) try to go in this direction. it will never be 100% perfect for the animals, but far away from cruel if done right.
I think he touched on it indirectly and never really solidified a stance. He mentions that animals with large territories and substantial natural needs shouldn't be held captive.
I would say that a whale is impossible to captivate, hell even dolphins are used to swimming miles and miles a day. How are they supposed to function normally in a pool?
right, obviously whales and big sharks fall in the category where you hardly can reproduce what is a natural habitat. lots of whales live in somewhat larger groups and are used to travel hundreds of thousands of miles every year. obviously they wont be happy.
my point with that quote was that a lot of animals, whether it is good for them or not, would gravitate back towards a free food source even when given the opportunity to escape from the zoo. and especially mother animals i think are very aware of protective environments and will recognize a compound as that.
again, this only holds if this animals natural environment can be reproduced sufficiently to provide a worthy life. i think no bear will come back to a small tile and concrete room smaller than a regular bedroom.
Lol humans and our ancestors have been eating meat for hundreds of thousands of years. You're just a pussy. I'm gonna go fire up some chicken and look at myself in the mirror in your honor.
I watched it. It was pretty hard not to root for whales killing the trainers. I like how everyone acts super surprised whenever someone gets mauled by a KILLER whale. What did you expect?
Watched Blackfish two days ago. Not surprised. Any animal kept in captivity is gonna be fucked up in some way. That being said Tillikums KDR must be off the chain, all those kills and 0 deaths, dudes a boss.
We haven't been raising animals in factory farms for hundreds of thousands of years.
I dunno why i'm a pussy for only eating plants. I've killed many animals. I know how to clean/dress fish and animals. The majority of guys who eat meat go to the fucking grocery store and buy meat from a fridge. Not exactly the manliest thing to go buy something that almost everyone eats from a fucking fridge.
The guys who get all defensive or scoff when they hear the word vegetarian are the pussies. I dunno what insecurities they have with their manhood but it's clearly there. I bet at least 1/3 of them probably wouldn't even be able to stomach being on the killing floor in the slaughterhouse, or even shoot an old dog or something. Fucking pussies.
