Mac or Pc for Video editing

If you're using adobe premeire for editing, there is literally no difference. I edited with premiere on win7 for a year and then hackintoshed my computer and been using premiere with osx and its literally the same.

It really depends on the specs of the computer, and the editing software you prefer. For example, I use sony vegas which is pc only. thus i use a pc.

I honestly prefer editing video/pictures on a mac, other than that I prefer and use a pc for everything else

If you use adobe software then a windows machine is going to be the best bet. Now some may not notice a difference like ehv said but for after effects for example the memory management in Osx is not quite as good as windows so adobe recommend windows. However for most you may barly tell a difference but when you get more advanced you may find Osx having speed issues.

If you are editing anything higher than Full HD (4k, 5k...) then go PC but if not then mac is definatly more versatile and easier to use.

At this point PC is better for video processing (especially for the price).

However, PC's are still horribly designed (yet extremely capable) pieces of garbage in the general sense, so factor in the time it takes to keep one from dying on you.

At your level the processing advantage of PC won't take effect, so really it comes down to price.

Yeah dude, I would never buy a mac pro haha maybe an imac again, because theyre pretty solid for what they do, but I paid the same price as a low end 27" imac and my computer blows away a top end imac 10 fold.

i handled 5k .r3d today on my top end imac extremely fast and efficiently. i'm sure yours is fantastic but "blows away" is a pretty big statement... tell that to mossop or any of the sherpas guys.

The biggest issue with imacs is overheating. Its a real issue if you are rendering larger files, have that thing rendering for 12 hours it gets stupid hot. They are also restricted by having to use mobile components. They are ok for light use and even some semi heavy projects, but certainly not heavy, heavy use for example 3d. For that if you want to go mac, a mac pro is a better choice. But for the same money as a mac pro you could build a beast of a windows box.

With the Mac Pro you enter the workstation domain, prices in that segment go to the stratosphere regardless of brand.

Not if you build it yourself though. I built a workstation for around 1500 which is more powerful then a 3000 mac pro. Just because its a workstation does not mean it has to cost a fortune. Hell for the price of a macbook pro you can build a beast of a workstation.

A single AMD FirePro W7000 (the equivalent card to the D300 in the base Mac Pro) is 769 $ on newegg, take two and that's already more then 1500$

thats all pretty common knowledge, and the only people that potentially deal with rendering a project of a size, quality, and length that requires a 12 hour render probably are doing so on a much more powerful workstation.

The point is, a top end imac is $3500 while my computer was $1400.

I also failed to mention we have two "top end" aka $3500 after tax imacs at my work and you're right, I was exaggerating when I said "blow out of the water" but my computer is a year old now and still has higher benchmarks.

Geekbench I get almost 20,000 multithread while the top end imac gets 14,000. 20k is also the same score as the top end 6 core imac that just came out that costs $4k as well.

Again, I'm pretty happy my computer only cost $1400.

Yes but amd cards are not the ideal card for most anyway. In most applications you will find a quadro k4000 will be better they can be had for around 600. For adobe GeForce cards will infact be the fastest so again a powerful card could be had for much less. The Mac Pro is a weird setup in my opinion. It would make sense to have 2 CPU then 2 gpu for most circumstances so again the Mac Pro really is very overpriced for how effective what your getting is.

No that's the point. My current project took 110 hours to render. I work on a workstation which costs less then a base iMac so really why spend the money on an iMac and limit yourself when you could build a hugely powerful workstation for the same money and work on highly much more technical projects.

You can watch some tutorials, but check out www.cyberpowerpc.com you can customize your own computer, buying one from them taught me alot about computer.

Not gonna lie though, the new mac pros (the tower) have some insane power for editing.. go look em up. Read something about editing 4K video without having to wait for rendering on multiple monitors at the same time.

lol thanks for regurgitated something you read online.

The new mac pros are really only efficient with final cut pro 10, gag me.

My hackintosh runs 4k red raw like a champ and its a year old. Being able to edit 4k raw isn't anything new.

And editing regular 4k that isn't raw isnt that big of a deal either. The new mac pros are very powerful but in ways that aren't useful.

Good for you I guess? Dont have to be a know-it-all-ass just because I splashed something I read down since some people might want to check it out. Also Im quite sure they would be just as efficient with other software as they would be with FCPX

It's a fact, look it up, apple optimized the system to be used with FCPX and other programs like Adobe Premiere use different components and uses the system in different ways.

Don't sit here and call me a "know it all ass" when you literally have no idea what you're talking about.

No the issue with the new Mac Pro is most cuurrbt software is still more CPU hungry then gpu. Having two amd cards is a waste for most applications. They would have been far better off going with a duel Xeon and quadro setup but then they woul have been the same as any workstation but still cost twice as much. It's a shame really. It a nice design but because it's apple they screwed us by what they put inside it.

No doubt, hackintosh's have their quirks and you can work around them easily, especially if you build a setup to hackintosh. I used windows for a year on my desktop and hackintoshed for use at work, just happened all the parts I bought worked but there are definitely "better" setups.

Get ready to tinker for a bit but its well worth it if you NEED OSX.

I might have to pick your brain about that stuff some time down the road. My MBP is on its last leg, and replacement parts for the 17" model are hard to find. If I can play Skyrim on the same computer I use to edit video, I'll be stoked.

Woo for another mac vs pc thread! Honestly you gotta try em out for yourself. I prefer the workflow on the mac and I got it for a lot off so that was the deal for me. But you may prefer a pc, just try em out.

It all depends on what you like. I am a mac guy so final cut was easy for me to pick up and use. I am a film student at MSU and they have us using adobe premiere pro and after using final cut for so long I was pretty confused where stuff was located

Get an iMac(with the best specs) or a Mac Pro. You can simply not go wrong with that. Even the cheapest iMac works fine, but if you really want some real power, go for an upgraded iMac or a Mac Pro. Now, no one can afford this unless they have been saving for a year, won the lottery, or robbed a bank, but do not despair.You'll come a long way with a MacBook Pro too. But you'll probably have to rob something to afford this as well.
Conclusion: Rob a bank, get a Mac. Thank you.
