Coyotes lurking around my house

Hey, anyone on here ever dealt with coyotes? I'm just going to bullet point my situation for semi-quick reading.

- Family moved to new city and into a new house. House isn't in suburbs, but isn't rural either. On a lake, so fairly spread out properties.
- We have three dogs. A black lab, pug, and mut. The black lab is fine, the pug follows me everywhere. But the mut loves to sneakily walk off and scrounge around for garbage. He used to do this at our old house. He'd come back at 2am with a stuffed gut and the shits.
- We have a fence. The Mut ALWAYS finds a way out.
- In the summer it will be inevitable. Even if the fence is secure, doors will be left open, dogs will adventure.
- Anyways, so people don't think i'm overthinking it.. My dad was cleaning up some stuff in the garage the other day and our Mut quietly walked off. Right away my dad called up to my sister in the carriage house above the garage. My sister grabbed her car and found the Mut with her lights. Long story short, my sister got to our Mut AS he was being mauled by coyotes. She got him out with some bruises and cuts. The dog still wants to wander, didn't learn a thing.

So, anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with these coyotes?

- It seems that the conservation officers won't do much.
- We reside in BC, so no lenient gun laws. (as far as I know)
- We considered an Antolian shepard. But we already have 3 dogs.
- A trapper would be expensive
- We read about sponges soaked in bacon fat, or those hooks in meat--no thanks. So no suggestions that would result in a coyote suffering a long painful death.

1. Get Ron Swanson to make you a real fucking fence.

2. Hire Caesar Milan to teach your dog not to be a fuckwit.

3. Get a gun, don't be a pussy. Even if this means blowing some big black thug, or giving crack to a thirsty junky.

4. This is the only one I can really recommend. Get a suit of Samurai armor, and a katana. And win back your dogs honor.

Get a bigger dog to chase off the coyotes. My chihuahua was getting chased by them and then my boxer lab and the neighbor's Great Dane chased the coyotes away. Coyotes won't fuck with a dog bigger than them.

I've lived in rural central Oregon off and on and there are coyotes fucking everywhere. Never had a problem with them messing with either of my dogs, you just have to be a good owner.
Just do your best to keep your dogs fenced in. If you want to let them run around then go with them, more or less taking them for a walk.
You have a little bit more intelligence than a dog, I'm sure you can keep them from getting out.

don't do anything. coyotes are just being coyotes. you can't blame them for you moving in with a nice juicy morsel of meat that runs off into their territory. either you dog learns their territory fast, you make sure he can't leave, or he's dead. pretty simple.

as much as i hate to say it, this is a pretty good idea. its this, or getting a real fence. coyotes can be sketch. my dad was walking my dog in the middle of the morning and a coyote came along and tried to eat my dog.

Yea they have even attacked people here. I'm sure some people dogs have chased off coyotes easily. This Mut is a retard though haha. We've considered the fence. The problem is still that the coyotes will come in the fence.

As for being more intelligent than my dogs. We do look after them. We are good dog owners. But mistakes happen, and our Mut is always looking to get out. He's like a wizard when it comes to fences.

Also we aren't coming in here and killing coyotes who've made it their home. The coyotes have quadruples their living range in BC. They're almost considered pests

when I moved in like the fourth grade we had a ton of coyotes on the new property. We heard them yipping almost every night. They even stole like 9 of our chickens. However we shot a couple and then got a huge guard dog and they haven't moved back in since. You could just get some live traps or some legs holds or something. Trapping really isn't that hard.

check with your local gov't laws and see if you are allowed to shoot guns on your property, if you are allowed, put an ad on kijiji saying you have coyote problems and you want someone to come shoot them. people will gladly come shoot some yotes for free.

you could either:
1. get an electric fence
or 2. if you cannot buy a gun, get a very high powered pellet gun with hunting pellets and that could easily take out a coyote.

don't do this. no pellet gun you can buy without a PAL (firearms licence) is anywhere close to powerful enough to take out a coyote. Even a high powered pellet gun is a pretty shitty way to go for a coyote. You're just going to make it suffer. .17 hmr is about the minimum I'd want to use. and even then if you don't hit it in the right spot it's going to run off injured and die somewhere.

I was hoping so. I just thought we could hang a bunch of bacon from a tree and blast them when they come for it. Buuut, I don't think we can. Going to look into it further.

May need to get an electric fence. Pricey though. Or maybe we'll just end up getting a livestock guardian dog.

We live in Denver and we have a huge coyote problem. Even though there is plenty of game(rabbits) for the coyotes to eat, they only hunt domesticated pets in our area. I know plenty of people who's dogs and cats have been taken, even from their own backyards. A coyote can easily jump a 6 foot fence with a small dog in its mouth.

I'm pretty pissed about it. The city refuses to do anything about it and it is illegal for us to do anything ourselves. They want us all to take lessons on how to effectively haze the coyotes and scare them out of our neighborhood. That's like trying to rid your neighborhood of mosquitoes by politely asking them to go somewhere else.

In neighboring areas, they have brought in sharp shooters to kill them off temporarily. It is true that other packs will move back into the area eventually, but it takes a while for them to get into the habit of targeting pets over their natural prey.

The term "Animal Control" in Denver only applies to pets. They actually changed the name of the group that is supposed to deal with wildlife to "Animal protection and education" or something close to that. They say tell us that the coyotes have more rights on our property than we do.

Don't get me wrong. I actually love wildlife, but I am not about to let a mountain lion eat me without putting up a fight and I'm going to go postal if my dog gets attacked in my yard.

Recently a guy had one of his dogs taken. His morning routine was to open up his garage door so his two dogs could go and bring his newspaper back to him. He had a older Lab and a smaller dog. One morning he opened his garage door and a pack of coyotes was waiting in his driveway. They grabbed the smaller dog and ran off before he could do anything. My neighbors across the street had their Black Lab attacked. The also have a Spaniel of some description. Coyotes hopped the fence into their backyard, went after the Spaniel, the Lab went to protect the smaller dog and was attacked; had to have a shitload of stitches.

Sorry for long winded response.

OP - I would spring for an invisible fence to keep your mutt from getting out of your yard. Also, go to a hunting store and by wolf urine scent. Spray that along the fence. You can also try peeing around your fence. If the coyotes attacked your dog once it is going to happen again if he gets out, you will be minus one mutt.

Actually the house we have has been here a long time. Apparently coyotes are very adaptable and have quadruples their range of habitat they can live in. So it may we the other way around.

That sounds worse than our situation. I just went outside and could hear them howling. I would be thrilled to buys. Suppressed 22 and shoot them then dump the bodies somewhere, but.. Anywho, I think my parents are considering a new dog. A Corso Cane. Maybe if they do, he'll fuck up some coyotes or scare them off at least

Coyotes attack for 2 main reasons. They attack to kill and eat and they attack in the spring for territorial/mating reasons. They will attack large male dogs in the spring because they perceive them as competition.

A few years back, a Burmese Mountain Dog was attacked a few blocks from my house while its owner was walking it on a leash.

I would highly recommend spraying the wolf urine scent around your house. This is proven to work. ... as long as you can keep your dogs inside the scent perimeter.

You live in BC.  Grow a pair and learn to hunt or trap.  Neither is hard or costly and you'll probably have a good time doing both.  You also will learn more about coyotes in the process and have a greater appreciation for wild things and how they interact with each other and encroaching civilization.  We are the dominant predator for a reason, it's called nature and when stuff messes with us we take action.  It's called life and last time I checked coyotes eat animals alive so don't feel to bad about how you get rid of them.

Honestly. I would be stoked to buy a 22 and go pick these fuckers off. But I don't want to be dinged for walking around my neighbourhood hunting the coyotes. I'd even hang up some bait in my yard and pick them off that way, but that's illegal apparently. Sounds like a pack of 5 or so. As for don't bother them and they won't bother you... Well they howl constantly near our place and already attacked on of our dogs. It wasn't a case of letting our dog roam free. The dog just wakes down the street for about 5 mins then bam! They're fast and they're waiting. Trying to lure in some prey. As for feeling bad. It wasn't with regards to shooting them, it was with regards to feeding them sponges that will bung up their digestive tract so they die a slow death. They eat animals alive, but they also don't have the same conscience that humans do. I'm not an advocate for killing an animal in that way. Anywho. Wolf piss, big dogs. We'll see I just wanted to see what some NSers though and if I might be missing something. Suppose I just got to deal with it. So easy simple way to avoid it.

Coyotes are smart fuckers, actually hard to hunt. If you do buy a rifle, buy a .223, fast, cheap rounds, good range and an electric coyotee call works wonders. In Saskatchewan there is a bounty on them, bring in 4 paws and get 25 bucks, on top of that if you either skin them yourself or possibly find someone who will buy whole animals off you (although I believe that it's technically illegal to sell the fur for profit without holding a trappers license)
and on the subject of nuisance animals and bountys, beavers are 45 bucks a tail where I'm from

yea im on the westside and i know plenty of people here that have lost atleast 1 pet to the coyotes. I feel like a fence is a good option with the wolf urine sprinkled around but you can never be guaranteed that itll work

The problem isn't the coyotes, it's you controlling your dogs. No matter how much of a macho, tough guy you thing you are you're never going to kill off every single coyote in your area. Buy an electric fence and just watch your dogs a little closer from now on so that no animals have to die because of your irresponsibility.

That sucks dude. They're around where I live and they'll take small dogs and outdoor cats, but they are not nearly as aggressive as what you've described. And there's way less of them. Here, outdoor animals are only slightly less likely to be snatched by a large bird...

My vote: electric fence, real fence, and pee on it. Who doesn't like peeing outside?

And dig a moat. And put alligators in it. And get an airboat to patrol it.

I may not be able to kill every coyote in the world, but ill sure as hell try to kill every one of these bastards i can. And ill enjoy my 75 bucks a dog while im at it.

OP, you could try to call the fish and game people of canadia to see if you can get a trap or anything or even practice trapping yourself. My uncle is a huge trapper and its definitely a unique and old hobby/profession that could be useful in this situation.

Or.....
Get a .22lr or any subsonic rifle and fashion a suppressor out of an oil filter so your neighbors cant hear you.

If it were me, id see if i could tag a few with my compound bow. Its silent, fast, and deadly and produces the same results as a gun would.

Forgot to mention that you could get a pet llama instead... Shepherds often have a few llamas with their sheep to protect them from coyotes. Llamas will fight them and can kick them to death so they typically wont stick around too long.

Because of my irresponsibility? I don't think I'm a macho tough guy..

Shit happens and dogs get out. My family looks after our dogs extremely well. But shit happens. Dogs dig holes to get under fences. People leave doors open for 30 seconds when they run to their car to grab something. Dogs get out sometimes.

If you're perfect, good for you. I'm just realistic. I know that I can't 100% guarantee my dogs safety, no dog owner can. Clearly other people have this problem too, coyotes are pests.

Haha yea I read about that. The gov website I read about had the traditional useless fucking tips. "Don't soak your dog in bacon fat and airdrop him into the middle of the forest where you think coyotes might be"

It didn't say that, but it listed information just as useless about prevention of pets being eaten.
