I killed an STH heel today...

Impressive.
Besides destroying several brakes, I've only done some good cosmetic damage

I've since then used these bindings as spare parts

Must have been an interesting impact / fall. That almost looks like a possibility for warranty depending on how old they are.

One of the main upgrades for the STH2 was a burlier heel piece with less play, the same heel piece on the guardian.

Basically the plastic you see around the screw houses the square nut and holds the binding from moving forward. And after sliding the bottom mounting plates off and inspecting the heelpiece even further I discovered that the entire heel track has been bent:



@Sweetums, it was an under rotated frontflip. I'm just learning them. I guess the boot would be hammering rearwards on the binding at that point and all the stress would be put on that plastic that houses the square nut. I'm going to check the landing tomorrow to see if I can find the blown out piece for shits and gigs.

The binding is a 2011-2012 model so I doubt I could get any warranty for it. I guess it wouldn't hurt to drop it off at the shop and see what they can do for me.

@Husky, you're definitely right. After doing some digging I found a pic of the guardian heel slid out of the track:



Looks like it has way more contact area between the wormscrew and the groove threads that moves the heel. Plus the screw is way more internal to the binding, and the screw looks to be housed with some beefier plastic. I think those two factors would prevent the kind of blowout I had, and if there is less play it's less likely to hammer back and forth when riding, or crashing. If I can get a decent price on some I'll likely bite the bullet and make the switch. The only changeover problem will be getting the hardware figured out for Binding Freedom inserts.

I forgot to add, I think Salomon has a five year warranty on their bindings, although I could be wrong.

Why not just go demo jester/griffon if you need that much adjustment? They're easily the lightest demo bindings compared to salomon and rossi. I've never really liked solly bindings until the guardian/tracker

Because most people would rather have a durable binding then a lower quality plastic binding.

Hey man unlucky on the binding. Where are you located. In Europe for example it's a 2 year warranty so you would be good. In Canada though it was I only a year I'm fairly sure. Worth taking it in though. Can't hurt to try an get it warrantied.

I'll try to fin the pics on my old phone. I have a sadly even more destroyed heel piece. It was from a set of sth 16's i had ridden for 3 years. I had learnt my skis to Max Morello when he had bust his and unfortunately he manged to destroy a heel piece. Where your track is bent a little, he managed to bent the track down infront of the heel unit at pretty much 90 degrees. The whole thing was so bent it was pretty amazing. I'll try to find the pics.

The different Warranties Periods are :
a. Three (3) years for winter sports trousers and jackets
b. Five (5) years for alpine ski bindings
c. Two (2) years for other products
