If she was actually just evil, or more or less a normal kid. Who the father is (for all we know she was raped, and for all we know she was raped by her own father). What her home life is like. Why she felt the need to hide that she was pregnant from her family. What she was so scared of that made killing the baby seem like the best/only course of action. Beyond that, she's only 14; her brain is not only fully matured, but also, most likely, is in the throes of puberty, which is a hard enough time for anyone, let alone someone living in an oppressive household dealing with an unwanted pregnancy.

She should not be treated like an adult because she isn't even close to being one. It's pretty messed up that they're treating her like she's 18.

whats the difference compared to her just getting an abortion? Shed already made the decision that she didnt want the baby so in both scenarios it wouldve died. However, the way she dealed with it is completely fucked and she should probably get tried to get mental help, instead of jail time.

she KILLED a BABY. A living, breathing, crying, pooping, baby. That is the complete definition of murder. It doesn't matter what the circumstances were, there are legal options to giving up your baby. Heck! leave the baby on someones door step. That thing does actually happen.

yes our society puts pressure on adolescents who have gone through puberty to stay "pure", don't get pregnant yada yada. That doesn't mean you kill a baby. at all, ever, no.

ok, first of all-- normal children don't give birth to their own babies and then kill them, and then put them in the closet.  She was not raped by her own father-- if you google some of the other articles she just didn't want to get in trouble so she didn't want them to know. her mother was suspicious and made her take pregnancy tests that she faked.  She will have attorneys that will use anything she has in her defense--the court will take care of the rest.

Clearly she isn't normal, but that doesn't necessarily mean she is evil and deserves to spend the rest of her life in jail.

Okay, she wasn't raped by her dad, it was unlikely in the first place, but clearly something is wrong in that house that she is so terrified of upsetting her parents that she hid the pregnancy, gave birth on her own, and then killed the baby. Either something is really wrong with the way the parents treat the girl in the private of their home, the girl has some kind of mental illness that made killing the baby seem like the only acceptable choice, or she is just evil. Unless we have solid evidence that it is the third, I don't think the girl should be sentenced to prison for life.

See, this is what pisses me off. A mental illness should not be a get out of jail free card, but unfortunately it is in a lot of cases. Regardless, this girl killed a baby in cold blood, that is all that should matter. Obviously she isn't normal, one could argue anyone that would take a life in cold blood isn't normal, does that mean every murderer should be released? The bottom line is that this girl chose to kill her newborn. Murder is Murder, if you are honestly sympathizing with this pathetic excuse for a life, then you should probably reevaluate your morals.

first off, i'm not saying she shouldn't suffer any kind of repercussions for this, i just think it's way too much to try her as an adult and potentially sentence her to life in prison.

I agree that mental illness is overused as a defense, but it is also perfectly legitimate in some cases, and in such cases it should be taken into consideration. It's silly to suggest anything otherwise. I also agree that anyone who has it in them to take a life is not normal, but, again, there are many different types of "not normal," aren't there? There are people out there who are just truly bad and don't consider the lives of anyone but themselves worth anything. These are the kinds of people who should be locked up for the rest of their lives. If that is the case with this girl, fine, lock her up and throw away the key.

Yes, she chose to kill her baby, but before we decide how she should be punished, shouldn't we consider why? If there are mitigating factors that persuaded the girl to act the way she did, shouldn't we take them into account? If the girl believed that she would be beaten horribly by her parents if they found out about the baby, does she still deserve to be punished the same as someone who murders because they just don't care about the life of anyone but themselves?

If you're willing to judge this girl so quickly and so harshly while knowing barely anything about her or the situation, maybe you ought to reevaluate your morals.

this is just the saddest thing ever. poor kid should have had parents who could talk to her honestly about sex, give her birth control if she wanted it, and still tell her that she was too young. instead she was scared and panicking and ruined her own life while ending another. just incredibly depressing that nobody could be there to give her guidance.

that's what a trial is for. they don't take all evidence and defense into account when pressing charges, the charges are pressed based on the crime that was committed. All of the mitigating factors are where the trial comes into play.

I guess I just don't understand why you'd sympathize with her or give her the benefit of the doubt prior to knowing anything about her or the situation. You're jumping to all sorts of conclusions to try and justify the crime, when there is no need. It will all come out in the trial-- whether she was mentally ill, abused, or just a fucked up individual-- we will know at some point, so why blindly defend her? At this point, all you know is that she killed a person.

Well I'm glad we can agree on a lot of that. But the last statement, barely knowing anything? What we know is that she killed her newborn, thats murder. Im sorry, I would not be surprised if her parents were awful, but that still does not take away from the FACT that she did what she did. Regardless of any outside factors, she killed her baby and that is what she will be on trial for, not what caused her to do it. Also i doubt highly she will do life, but does she deserve to be locked up for a long time? damn straight she does.
