Can you drink while on antibiotics?

That's highly dependent on which antibiotic. Google the name on the label + drinking and you'll have your answer.

It depends on what kind they are. Call the doctor and straight up ask them. BUT if you're sick enough that you need to take antibiotics, you shouldn't be drinking.
That being said, when I had strep a few years ago it was a ten day cycle and I was going on a ski trip. By about day 4 the strep was gone, but you're supposed to finish the cycle. I started drinking on like day 7 and then by day 8 forgot to finish the prescription, low and behold 2 years later I'm alive.

The main point is, alcohol can lessen the effects of the antibiotic.
BUT there are some antibiotics that can have lethal effects when mixed. SO either google the "exact medication and alcohol" and/or call your doctor in the morning. (They will tell you they don't advise it, but be honest with them and have them tell you of adverse reactions to alcohol)

What the hell are you talking about...
You do realize penicillin is not a narcotic, you're not going to get "trippy"
The antibiotic doesn't react with the alcohol, rather the alcohol lessens the effects of the medicine (aka it will take you longer to get better) other than that you won't feel anything different when drinking.


Kids these days..... trying to get all sorts of fucked up on dumb shit.

honestly you're not in for any kind of ride. its an antibiotic, the only thing thats going to happen is that you'll be sicker for longer because alcohol wont let it work properly.

I'm not trying to get triply, I think you misinterpreted me. I was saying that I can use google but would rather hear from others who probably have a high tolerance of pain and I high inclination to rage despite being sick/injured (I think people in our sport have that in common). I am genuinely taking penn because I need to to clear up an infection but also want to go hard despite being ill, not trying to find some next level drug induced state.

I have on penicillin, in my defense, it didn't say not to. Also, I typically have a pretty high tolerance, but this time I had a beer, a glass of wine, and split a bottle of champagne with a girl. I was drunk off my ass. Google it to be safe, and take it easier at the start until you can tell how much its affecting you.

Okay listen up world... ALCOHOL DOESN'T LESSEN THE EFFECT OF ANTIBIOTICS. For MOST antibiotics, the only reason they say not to drink while on them is because a side effect of antibiotics is nausea. Alcohol also has a side effect of nausea... go figure. So combined that is nausea x2. Now a few antibiotics will react with alcohol and be very dangerous but most are fine. Now... alcohol kills off white blood cells which fight off disease and make it harder to recover from whatever illness plagues you. But it doesn't directly negatively affect the antibiotics.

Yes. Just know it is only going to take you about half of what it normally takes to get you drunk (depending on how sick you are) and your hangover is going to be awful.

PGY-1 pharm resident here...

Alc has pleotropic effects, one of which is immunosupression (killing white blood cells as stated above) but that also comes along with decreased function of a variety of other cells. Also, because alcohol is inhibitory, the respiratory system is effected in moderate to high doses of alc. Everyone's receptor make up (primarily GABA and glutamate) is different and ranges much wider than a lot of people can appreciate. These receptors can be up-regulated and down-regulated depending on your drinking habits in the past...

So essentially, there are many variables that will decide how you react to getting hammered, but regardless its not the best decision to drink on antibiotics (some much worse than others ie. metronidazole) but the effects are widely variable and you should probably hydrate heavily and expect whatever particular antibiotic you are on, not to work nearly as well in the future...

for most you will be fine but it can highly decrease the effectiveness of the antibiotic.

careful what you're on though.
one of my friends was given antibiotics (not sure what for) but apparently they give the same antibiotics to alcoholics because the reaction to alcohol is so terrible and sickening that it makes them want to stop drinking.
