Alright im going to tell you, then you're going to not believe it.
Money.
Guess what private companies are funding non profit fronts to try to make better space access? Big Oil and Mining. Its already whats happening on the moon, the Chinese lunar probe Yuyu is looking for rare and expensive minerals and metals.
We need more raw materials. We need more gold for electronics, more silicon for electronics, platinum, diamonds, we could always use more of it, and whoever got their hands on it would be rich.
Next reason is kind of unspoken, but its very clear. Did Mars have life on it ever, and is that life linked to earth? Did micro-organisms exist on Mars before earth, spread here, and we evolved? Or the opposite? Or was there life simultaneously? Its the first logical step to answer the question "Where are we from?" and "Are there more of us?"
Last plausible reason is to show we can live on another planet. Im sure the longer range goal with a human landing would be some kind of base, think the ISS on Mars. That would be a very big deal as it would show if humanity got to the point where we couldn't live on Earth, we could set up bases on our surrounding planets and larger moons, and maybe someday when interstellar travel becomes more viable, we have a blueprint for how to begin colonization.
Try thinking bigger, there's some vvery real reasons to get people on Mars.
Ok I feel you, I wasn't really thinking from a profit standpoint. I know I personally would not care for going. However, for some reason I did not think of the scientific aspect.
