Steam Day Z

Alright so I'm a complete noob when it comes to steam and pc gaming. I was scrolling through games on the store of steam and came across Day Z. I youtubed it and it looked awesome. It's just that there is the arma 2 day z mod and the actual day z game. I am confused as to which I should buy. I went to google and found nothing. I am aware the Day z is an early beta game and the mod was made first

On the download page on their website, it says ArmA 2: Combined Operations, and DayZ mod files are needed.
