-Large resort corporations buying out every mountain
-Upped ticket & food prices
-Becoming more of a luxury sport
-Basically just how its all "CLASSY" and bullshit

Skiing isn't just a fun activity anymore, for most it's a vacation for rich people who ski until 2:00 in the afternoon then go get fine wine and lobster tails at their favorite fireside lodge.

The ski bum community needs to overpower, no doubt.

God damn it this thread is stupid. And skiing wasn't marketed as a rich white person sport or as some one stated, using my least favorite word a "classy" sport. It gained that reputation because it is expensive. Getting to the mountains and buying gear inst cheap so not everyone can do it.

I know. It's economically unavoidable.

Demand is high, therefore prices are high. If they doubled the price, people would still be willing to pay for it.

But at the same time, I just wonder if it's also due to that "corporate mentality".

not really. a lot of resorts have to charge the prices they do just to cover their costs, and barely break even a lot of times. granted that may not be true for vail resorts, but thats how a lot of locally owned ones operate

The problem is that companies pushing that image back before the internet pushed that shit so hard that it became the only image skiing had, hence why in your post you mention people having to drive to the mountains and buy gear. Back then any town with snow and hills had a ropetow and if they didn't the town next door did. These places also probably wouldn't have batted an eye if you came with homemade gear and leather bindings, the place my dad learned to ski at let people with sleds ride the ropetow. But once people started thinking that skiing only happened at fancy resorts and cost a lot, these places lost a lot of business, had to shut down, and shit just got more expensive.

Vail Resorts, Boyne Resorts.... the corporatization of skiing.

I think this will become prevalent in the coming decade... there is an ever-widening gap between ski RESORTS and ski AREAS.

Yeah I live in WI and I have 2 or 3 parks that have a volunteer park crew but no lifts and are free. One that does have rope tow and is maintained like a real park, and it also costs like 10ish dollars for a pass for all winter.. And all of them are within 30 min of me.

yeah, thats the one thing I envy about the midwest haha. Still not on the same scale as back then though. I'm being serious when I say every town had a ski area, there are 173 closed hills in Massachusetts alone.

People not smiling or having an overall stoked attitude when out on the mountain. I swear sometimes I'm the only one smiling in the park and just happy I'm out on my skis on the snow...park rats get way too serious sometimes about how they look or impressing people around them.

I do not agree with this.

On the contrary skiierman may be one of the best things thats happened to skiing. It's just hard to tell because he hates humanity, but he loves skiing.

Absolutely nothing. I go skiing with my friends and it's amazing every day. Not once do I think about the olympics, or tanner hall the cyber bully, or simon doing commercials, or skiierman, or fis, or style vs. tech. None of that actually affects skiing for me. Not until I come home and look at stupid threads like this haha.

Skiing getting taken out of the olympics because it's "too dangerous" bad injuries are part of skiing, they happen because of bad luck and not thinking something through hard enough.

I've been lucky enough to not have a season ender, but the amount of concussions and breaks my friends have had makes their parents tell them that they shouldn't do it anymore. If someone gets hurt in olympic slopestyle, there could be a lawsuit, then olympic freeskiing would be over.

I feel you. That other guy put it in the best words, with how places aren't just ski areas, but ski RESORTS. That's what I was getting at.

Parallel: if I wanna chill on a beach in Mexico, but I have to pay extra because they want a resort area on that stretch of beach.

sometimes when i get up the hill it's like one big catwalk where all rich kids show off their expensive gear, nobody talks to you but wants to be looked at, yet nobody can actually ski/snowboard.

last but not least all the commercialist shit like fis, olympics etc, it's just not what the freeskiing image actually is, imagine if they took bowl skateboarding to olympics... lawlz.
