Attention fisherman of NS!

i want to get my dad a new rod/reel for christmas because his setup is pretty old and falling apart. so for christmas i want to get him a decent piece of equipment, but i dont have a whole lot of cash to get anything too pricy. is there anything decent for under $150? we mainly fish bass if that helps.

I'll assume same price range as op?

With spinning reels there isn't as much of a difference between say a $50-75 reel, so you can save yourself a bit of money or use the extra to get a nicer rod. In that price range id recommend Pfleuger President, Shimano Sedona, or Abu Garcia Orra S. I've always believe that Pfleuger reels give you the best reel for the price, so god damn smooth.

For a rod I'd go with Fenwick Eagle GT, St. Croix Triumph, Or Shimano Convergence. Also, if you have a Gander Moountain near you, their GSX rods are Gander branded G-Loomis blanks and usually on sale so they are in the price range.

Also what kind of baits and line will mostly be used on it? This will help in determining size, power, and action of rod

Great info! Not sure about bails and lines. If it helps, he's fishing in mid-northern Saskatchewan, so lots of trout, walleye and northern pike

I'd get him a 13 Fishing Omen Black in a 6'7" or 6'10" ML, and a gift certificate for the last $50 for Tackle Warehouse so he can put that towards a good reel. Those rods are the TITS though. I know $100 sounds like a lot but these rods totally run with the big boys and your dad would be impressed as hell with that, not to mention it would last forever.

Meant to say M power, not ML. M would be a great all around rod for pretty much anything. I have an ML and it's awesome but it's a little light for some Bass tackle.

Lake trout i'm assuming?

I'd go medium heavy, fast action for good backbone on hook sets and around 7' for length. I catch a lot of walleye and northern here in MN and that is the rod I prefer for that. Not too sure but if he fishes mostly for lake trout i'd think you'd want a little beefier rod and probably a baitcaster instead of spinning?

Also if he's mostly jigging or lindy rigging for eyes I would probably spend a little bit more on the rod and step up to the next highest models of the ones I suggested. The better graphite gives you some extra sensitivity which is crucial for the more finesse presentations so you can feel those little nibbles.

Also like Hucks suggestion ^. Getting just the rod then a gift card allows him to go in and hold the reels so he can see which one feels best for him, and a lot of fishermen (including me) usually kinda have tunnel vision for a brand of reel they greatly prefer and trust over others and tend to stick with that brand.

Personally, I hate ugly sticks. They are just dead and have no feel or sensitivity to them. For fishing monster fish species in deep water they are fine, but I personally would never use one bass fishing.

Good choice on the reel, I absolutely love em!

Please no. Ugly sticks really are the schwag of fishing rods. The prezzies are nice but reels are so subjective it's impossible to say how he will like that setup overall.

Just get him a really nice rod like that 13 Omen or the ones Nectar mentioned are all good as well- and use the little extra towards a gift card, as you'll never know what feels best in his hand or exactly what he aims to use it for so that detail is best left to him imo. He will appreciate the solid foundation and no doubt jump on the gift card excuse to splurge- dads need that enabler sometimes to crack the wallet open and get themselves something nice.

Just my .02, it's what I would do in your situation without a doubt or hesitation and your dad will shit a brick getting a rod that nice.

They work, they're just wet noodles. I need a fast or extra fast action to feel like I'm connected to what's happening on the other end of the line. Good beginner setup but the more you fish the more you'll probably notice and appreciate the details inherent with a higher modulus rod.

Hey there's nothing wrong with fishing on old gear. That's kind of the beauty of fishing. You are fishing with a stick and some twine just as much as you are if you have a full Megabass setup. Sure, expensive stuff is nice, but you don't NEED it. Whatever works for your current situation is more than fine. If the fish are biting and the weather is nice, who cares what kind of pole it is? :)

Hell ya I still use my first ever spinning setup my dad got me for my first walleye opener weekend with the "guys" almost 11 years ago.

On the nice vs crap rod thing, a nice rod really does make a lot of difference especially with finesse fishing techniques. Shit with my rod I can tell you whats on the bottom where i'm fishing whether its matted veg, sand, pebbles, boulders, stumps, it's absofuckinglutely incredible. I will never be able to buy a rod for under $100 again haha
