well, correct me if I'm wrong but stand up basically means 80's/90's so you're going to have to deal with the issues of having an older ski. They can get expensive and I don't consider jet skiing a sport.

I want one. MK, if OP were to buy yours how are you gonna get it to him?

Jet skis are fun for about 2 days, then you realise they are pretty much useless. Save your money and buy something else or buy a boat when you have space

A 550 should probably be fine for you. Get an older kawasaki one from the 80's-90's. They're pretty simple to work on and fix and still a blast. If you do get bored, 3 cylinder swaps are pretty easy too.

I've always wanted one. Look like so much fun. My uncle got a regular sit down one at my grandparents cottage. I used to take it out on lake ontario and bomb over the swells.

I don't have any good advice but if you get one I'm jealous.

The standup ones are way harder to learn than the sit down ones, but its worth it

You should buy a nice pair of boardshorts and rent a stand up.

Trying to find one that needs a little work may be your best bet. You can find them super cheap, and they are simple to work on. You could find a 550 that needs a top end for around 300 and bore it out. Then you have 1) a running ski 2) the extra power you might want later and 3) you know how to fix it when it breaks. A 2 stroke top end can be rebuilt in less than an hour with all the tools and parts. Just depends if you want a project or if your just looking to hop on and ride. Always better built than bought IMO

My family has 3 boats (/claim? oh well) and I still think our jet skis are ridiculously awesome. You're doing something wrong if you can't have fun while on a jet ski.

Jet skis are really easy to have fun on, but being into watersports I beg you, don't be that guy who "jumps" across peoples wakes as someone is wakeboarding or waterskiing. I've seen a few close calls, and you don't want this to happen



Also, if the lake has a slalom ski course, don't go ripping through there around the balls, you'll just rip them out and make the owner pay more money and take more time to install a new ball.

But if you find a good deal on one, they can be really fun and lead to good days on the water.

I have done it a couple of times and yeah it is fun. But i also have a boat (claim) and it is just way more useful/fun to me.

Try to frown on a wave runner.

I have an fx1 and a 440 and the 440 sucks after riding the fx1. 550's and 650's are pretty sick but not nearly as dope as a super jet or an fx1. I would suggest saving a little more money and getting an fx1. Worth it in the longrun forsure.

Wtf are you thinking? Yamaha and kawi never stopped making stand ups. We bought a yamaha superjet in 04 and i can get massive airs on it and drift as well

I have a bit of a standup jet ski addiction. I've built all my own skis and race them, so I should be able to help you out on this one a little bit.

First off, do NOT get a 650SX. They are the worst handling skis ever made. Their poweplant is good, but they are overprice, heavy as shit, and handle like dog shit.

A JS550 is a fun little ski. A JS440 has the same hull, but a 110cc smaller engine and a little bit more antiquated in their pump design, so they are more tedious to work on and pack far less low end hit. I would recommend a JS550 ($400-$1000), but 440s are not my cup of tea, however, they can be had for cheap ($200-$600).

A 550SX would be my first choice. They are a bit more expensive than a JS550, but they have a reed motor, rather than a piston port motor, along with rear, rather than side exhaust. The 550SX motor is very reliable in stock form. Their hulls, although very similar to an older JS550 hull, tend to handle much better from my experiences. They generally run more in the $600-$1200 range.

You can find a nice 750SX for around a grand to $1500 if you search around. They are the best-handling of the Kawi vintage skis (pre-2003). There are a lot of different forms of the 750SX, but the pre-1995 ones tend to be the best bang for your buck. They came out with a 750SXi, which has dual carbs, and a bigger crankshaft diameter engine, but those often cost more. Then, there is the 750 SXi Pro, which is an SXi with a better-handling hull design. Those often run in the $1500-$2500 range.

My race ski is a 2007 Kawasaki SXR 800 built for stock class racing. If you have the money, there is no ski that is a better purchase. They turn on rails with minimal mods, and they are extremely reliable. These were built from 2003-2011. They tend to run in the $3000-$7000 range, sometimes more with crazy mods.

There's also an option of swapping a bigger engine into a 550 hull. Although, this would be a tedious process for someone with little mechanical background (not saying you do), the results are awesome. I had my 550SX/650 conversion hitting 50mph and had a huge low-end punch.

I've never owned a Superjet, but I've ridden many. They are very nimble skis, and both early roundnoses, and squarenoses handle very similarily. Both their early 650 squarenose engines, and roundnose 701 engine are extremely bulletproof. Be prepared to throw out a bit more dough for these skis. They tend to hold their value, and are a bit more rare than a Kawi standup. A nice squarenose can be had for around a grand. Squarenoses are nice reliable skis, albeit hideous looking. Roundnoses are going to cost you no less than $2000, usually more. Newer '08+ roundnose Superjets are one of the best all-around skis with their improved hull design, but they carry a hefty price tag ($4500+).

Yeaah, they're still making the Superjet standup, but it's supposed to be sold for closed course use only. Kawasaki stopped making them in 2011.

HSR Benelli out of Austria still makes a standup ski seen below.








Also, OP, I forgot to mention Polaris made a standup called the Octane in the early 2000's. That's another tough one to find, but they generally go for cheap in comparison to a Superjet or SXR and they are piped stock and run 55 mph out of the box.



There's also the Sea Doo 3D, although people will look at you the same way they'd look at you if you were wearing snowblades on the mountain when you ride it.




Another option is a Kawasaki X2, which is kinda a combination between a standup and sitdown. They are 650 based, so really easily accessible parts, easy to work on, cheap, etc. They usually go around $500-$1000.
