You think Netflix is out of your budget.

You never buy more than 4 things at the grocery store at a time.

You think you look cool in your 7 year old ripped to shreds gear but you look homeless

You forego shampoo and body wash for some new wax.

Your ski boots dont and will never be new or fitted.

Your bases are so beat up you're not sure how the things still slide.

You dont feel safe in your bindings ever

Your ski gear is both never washed never dried and always thrown in the same pile everyday

Nothing else in your life makes sense quite like skiing does.

When going through last years unclaimed lost & found, at the mountain you work at, is how you get new gear....

If you make 20 bucks an hr in the summer and 8 in the winter but will NEVER work your summer job in the winter!

If you live in a camper in the off season to save money

You know your a ski bum if you consider 2 new items out of your 10 used ones to constitute a "New" set up.

Yes pc needs late buses, the judicial system also needs money from broke 23 yr old ski bums with no insurance.

I would have too if they made the prices a bit more reasonable maybe people wouldn't feel obligated to bring their own shit I'd have no gas money if I bought a meal every time I skied a fucking gatoraid is 4 buck at my mountain 20oz

Mt. Baker stopped selling cup o noodles but we're so attached to our cup o noodles that everyone brings their own. Nobody buys lodge food because the only lodge food that ever sold well was cup o noodles.

you are smart enough to avoid half the bullshit in this thread, and actually live a half decent life while skiing more often than not

If you work summers and part time in the winter, you can actually live a halfway decent life.  A real skier makes life comfortable enough to make skiing 200+ days possible for decades, not just a year or two of poverty level living.  Not really sure why people have to take pride in being poor scumbags, when it is entirely possible to avoid

So many people talking about instant microwave meals and other shitty types of food.. You'd be surprised how easy it is to make a great meal for less than what instant noodles cost everyday. Buy an onion, pack of mushrooms, cream, maybe bacon or ham and other cheap ass vegetables and you got you got food that will last for a week ..

....Your smart wool socks tend to not get washed for an entire season, or anything else ski related for that matter.

You ride the bus so much Vail decides to up the price from "FREE" to "NOT FREE".

Edge cracks become a non-issue

Binding fixes are a daily routine.

You buy so much used gear that the day you buy a new pair of skis you land a dub 10.

You forget there is a life after 4:30 PM MST.

You realize you didn't actually have to train so hard, carrying you ski gear everywhere is doing that for you.

After two days without riding you can't stop watching videos on this website.

Sleeping bags become your best friend.

You wake up, concussed, sore, maybe bleeding, bruised, in a different country, in a tent on the side of mountain, or at the bottom of a really huge feature and want to do it again.

finally someone said it, there are definitely a lot of dead broke ski bums that match a lot of these descriptions, but its far from essential!

all my gear is top notch and almost brand new and i can safely say i ski more than pretty much everyone on NS... #skibummingtherightway

TIPS FOR BEING A SKI BUM...I didn't feel like making a new thread

1) Eat two well timed meals a day, like cereal and ramen with eggs/chicken. Buy rice, cheese, pasta, tortillas and peanut butter. That should last you at least a month.

2) Work (or go to school) as much as possible in the summer/fall.

3) When you want to do something cool that costs money really think if you want to. Looking at the big picture (gear/pass/gas money to hill) is key.

4) Hang out with the homies as much as possible, this splits the cost of just about everything and you may even have a rich friend that hooks it up

5) Either find a rich girlfriend or stick with friends-with-benefits. No hate to the dude that found the perfect girl that doesn't like material things, but you're 1 in 100.

6) I guess don't buy ski pants? Not my favorite idea but it seems to work out well for others with track pants.

7) You really don't need goggles anymore, storms are super rare unless you live in BC/AK, stick with shades...bruh.

8) Never to laundry...more than once a month, unless you're so deep in being a bum you have one or two sets of clothes, then do it more often.

9) Learn how to tune/put on your bindings/do other easy ski shop things so you can save money when you have an issue.

10) SAVE DAT MONEY

You and your buddies have the sudden urge to buy a van or short bus just throw beds/hammocks, a hot plate, and a little genny in the back of it for easy access pow days and early laps...yeah I'm looking into buying a fucking bus

When you know exactly where the supermarkets dumpsters are and when they throw out the fresh pastries and fruit.

Also....when you become an instructor purely just so you can ski all day every day and kinda get away with calling yourself a professional skier!

-You become friends with lifties to have them look the other way when you don't have a pass

-You offer families "lessons" that are cheaper than ski school so you can make money for food

-You often offer to repair gear for people, and if they pay so be it

-You pay the ski techs with alcohol for anything you can't do yourself

-You flirt with ticket office girls for the occasional free lift ticket

-You are always nice to anyone since its hard to frown when skiing

-You know you've made a friend when they offer to split a sub with you

-An entire pizza is gone within 3 minutes of it being delivered

-You befriend wait-staff and often get food that is "rejected" or "extra"
