Sir Francis Bacon Mounting Question

hey NS,
I picked up a pair of 179cm bacons and a pair of FKS's. I'm 5'11" and 200lbs with a pair of tecnica demon 130 boots and was wondering if I should mount at the recommended (-20mm I think) or go farther back around the 30-35 mm mark. I ski pretty aggressively some backwards stuff and minimal park. I'm more worried about all mtn performance and not whirlybirds so if anyone has any experience or input it will be greatly appreciated!

With the near symmetric flex, near symmetrical dimensions, equal tip and tail rocker these would actually perform best at -2 even for traditional skiing. You'll be centred in the sidecut and the ski will actually be more stable there then further back.

alright thanks! just curious since a buddy mounted his TSTs back 35 but those aren't symmetrical so that makes more sense now.

If you aren't spinning much, and you aren't riding switch much... mount them further back. You're 200lbs on a rockered 178cm ski.

If they're this years bacons, there should be a "center" "pollards choice" and "recommended" or whatever the last one is.. pollards is 2cm back, I believe the recommended is 6 or so back. It might even say on the ski. PIck somewhere between -2 and -6. These ski really short, and it will be nice having more in front of your foot. Especially if you arent spending alot of time switch or spinning..

I put around 80 days on this past years 184 SFB, sold them to get the 190's. I might ski alot differently from you, but I've spent alot of time on center mount skis, or skis mounted pretty far forward. I love the bacons, might be some of the most fun skis I've ever been on. The 184s left me wanting more up front.. especially at speed.

So yea, consider going a bit further back. The mount marks are on there for a reason, as long as you're somewhere between that -2 and -6 you'll be in the sweet spot for the sidecut and flex.

I grew up on race skis so I tend to ski aggressively pushing through the tips of my skis so farther back would probably help and the whole "symmetric flex" won't throw things off?
Also, to answer your question I'm on the 2013 ones.

Re read your post, you're looking for "all mountain" performance over jibber jabber spinny flippy skis.

I just spent alot of time on the '13s.. if I understand correctly.. the one line thats on those would be "pollards" mount. -2cms from true center. Dont be afraid to go back a little from that line. Take a tape measure and find true center yourself.. If you dont have one, just take a ruler or whatever, measure back from the line thats on there a few cms.. or where ever you want them mounted, put a line on them, so the shop knows exactly where you want them and theres no way to screw it up.

Im considering splitting the difference on my 190s.. I might go -4.. The flex is symmetric, but, as I said, if you're in that range of -2 to -6 you should be in the sweet spot.

Maybe ape man will chime in with some insight? I'd actually be interested to know where someone like colter hinchliffe rides his..

i mounted mine at the erics choice position and its awesome. just be sure that the shop measures correctly because sometimes the top sheets are off.

Mounting lines on 2014 SFB 190s.

Using tape measure, relative to the true geometric center of the ski, the "CENTER" line is 2 cm behind true center, the "ERIC'S CHOICE" line is another 2 cm back, and the "RECOMMENDED" line is another 4 cm back.

So, relative to TRUE center:

"CENTER" = - 2 cm

"ERIC" = - 4 cm

"RECOMMENDED" = - 8 cm

When other posts say "2 cm behind center", I can't tell if they mean 2 cm behind true center that they measured, or if they mean 2 cm behind a mark labeled "center", which they may or may not have measured, and which may or may not have been a true center. Anybody have a definitive answer?


I don't have older model to measure and compare, and apparently there have been inconsistencies.

Haven't mounted yet, wanted to measure first to know what I was getting. The physical length of the ski is about 187.5 cm.

Consulted the spec sheet from K2/Line. For 190 Bacons, it gives a single mounting distance, 933 mm from the tail, which is supposed to be measured along the underside of the base. If you measure this way, 933 mm is exactly where the CENTER line is. The ERIC and RECOMMENDED lines are further back from that, as discussed. Note: The CENTER line is not the true physical center of the ski, it is the center of the side-cut, and is actually about 2 cm behind true center. That's why the ERIC line is 4 cm behind true center. By the way, if you measure the length of the ski the proper way (along the base underside instead of straight tape pull) it's exactly 190 cm.
