so i gotta do a project for science and it can be on whatever i want so i thought i might as well do it on skiing. i have to use "credible sources" or some shit so i was pretty limited on where i coud look for background info. while i was looking i found this "play"
Narrator 1: Mr. Cashman is taking his kids, Brady and Melissa, on a weekend ski trip. Brady's friend Andrew joins them. During the car ride, the kids discuss their plans.
Brady: I heard Mighty Mountain has a cool terrain park. I can't wait to try their rails!
Mr. Cashman: What's that?
Brady: A terrain park is a big area with equipment like rails and ramps that skiers and snowboarders use to do tricks.
Andrew: I want to check out the half-pipe. I can't believe how high some boarders get when they go airborne!
Melissa: Shaun White is my favorite athlete. In an Olympic
snowboarding competition, he did three full rotations in the air before
landing. I want to do that someday.
Brady: Keep dreaming, Mel. You'll be lucky if you ever move past the bunny slope.
Melissa: You just watch me. I've been practicing.
Narrator 1: Brady rolls his eyes. Soon the car pulls into the Mighty Mountain Resort. The group gets ready to hit the slopes.
Scene 2
Narrator 2: As the kids put on their gear, they notice that their
snowboards look identical. They take the lift to the top of a slope.
They decide to practice before going to the terrain park. Andrew is
having trouble controlling his snowboard and keeps falling.
Andrew (dusting off his ski pants): What am I doing wrong? My board is the same as yours and Brady's!
Melissa: You have to zigzag down the slope. You'll go too fast and
have no control if you try to go straight down. Make turns by leaning in
the direction you want to go and pushing the edge of the board into the
snow.
Narrator 2: Andrew bends his knees, leans to the left, and shifts his weight on the board. Swoosh! He makes a tight turn.
Andrew: Look! I turned without falling!
Melissa: That's great! You're using friction
to control your speed and help you turn. When the edge of the board and
the snow rub together, a slowing force is created. You can't turn
without it.
Narrator 2: Brady speeds ahead. He turns and yells to his friend.
Brady: I didn't know you were such a beginner, Andrew. That's OK-more fresh powder for me.
Narrator 2: Brady speeds toward a mound of snow and jumps gracefully off it.
Scene 3
Narrator 3: The next day, the kids are eating lunch when Mr. Cashman excitedly approaches.
Mr. Cashman: Look, kids! There's a junior rail competition today. I
already signed you up! But the competition is in 20 minutes. You have to
hurry.
Brady: Oh no! I forgot my ski mask in the room.
Mr. Cashman: Melissa and Andrew: Bring Brady's snowboard to the park for him.
Brady: I'll meet you there.
Narrator 3: Outside in the terrain park, it's Melissa's turn first.
She glides smoothly down an S-shaped rail and flies off the end. She
kicks up her board in the air, and then lands smoothly.
Melissa: Yes! I nailed it!
Narrator 3: During Andrew's turn, his board slides over the rail more slowly than Melissa's. He lands awkwardly at the end.
Andrew: Whew! At least I didn't land face-first.
Narrator 3: Next, Brady tries to glide up to a rail, but the
snowboard is moving slower than usual. Brady hops on the rail. Screech!
The board makes a grating sound. Brady falls off.
Brady: I don't understand! Unlike either of you, I just had my board waxed this morning. The wax is supposed to lower the friction between the board and the rail, so you can glide more easily. I was certain I was going to do the best tricks.
Andrew: Sorry, dude. Unlucky break, I guess.
Brady: I don't think so. One of you wanted me to lose, so you
replaced my board with your unwaxed one! That's why this board doesn't
slide easily.
Melissa: No I didn't!
Andrew: Neither did I!
Brady: Give me your boards. I can prove it!
im honestly too stunned to even know what to think about this sheer gaping... thoughts?
