has any member of the newschoolers community suffered from depression if so what are the best ways of going about it? i do not mind if there is any entertaining posts as it is entertaining but i would like to try to keep this as serious as possible

Talking to a friend always helps. Just find someone that will listen and just talk. and talk. and talk. Also, Exercising is a pretty good short term fix. You will feel 100x better after you go run like 2 or 3 miles. Also, Express gratitude for the things that you have been granted in life and ignore the things that maybe causing the depression. Think about all the amazing things you have in life (family, friends, etc.). Also, surround yourself with friends or family all the time too. DO NOT spend a lot of time alone. That just gives you time to think about things. All this worked for me.

Don't think that's a good idea. The power of a psychiatrist is as a guide. To listen without bias or emotional investment . I am a 4th year psych student, so I don't have any real experience but I'd be glad to talk to anyone who needed help.

Just my experience but all the psych students and people practising i know... seem to be the most fucked up people i've met... I may be generalising, bu the profession seems to attract the crazies

Well you aren't completely wrong, I have found a lot of people to be in psych for personal exploration. So yeah quite a few odd balls. Yes I am in there for personal reasons but it's because I had an "experience" close to home back in the day that made me want to help people this way.

lots of people feel that therapy helps. you should talk to your dad, but idk if its the best idea to use him as your therapist, too connected already you know? eat well, exercise, try to be around people you enjoy, have someone close you can talk to, don't be afraid to ask girls out, try to surprise yourself with something new and fun every once in a while (trying new things on skis goes a long way for me), and most importantly never stop trying to be happy. if you settle into numbness you will sink lower and lower into a hole that is hard to get out of. there'll be days where all you want to do is stay in and feel sorry for yourself, but you have to keep getting out there and trying to focus on the good things, even when it seems really pointless.

I'd leave the depression talk out of this and try and make a vow to yourself to stop feeling sorry for yourself and just don't engage in self pity.

If there are things in your life getting you down I'm going to guess they relate to other people.  Well guess what hotshot...other people aren't your slaves.  So if a girl you like wants another dude you got to deal with it not cry about it.  If actions of others make you depressed then its a cop out.


LOTS OF PEOPLE LOVE, and I mean fucking LOVE sympathy.  Its like a drug to some to ge other people to feel bad for them.  If that is you nip that shit in the butt and appreciate the things you have and realize you can be who you want and what you want and other people are just there.

You seem like a chill dude and one of the cooler posters on this.  Let me try and give you some quick tips probably won't help but I'll try.

Just be honest with yourself and find the root of the problem and then attack it.  Chances are in 5 years you will have problems worse than what you have now and your current ones will seem insignificant and trivial while the larger problems you have in 5 years don't seem like such a big deal even though they are bigger than your current ones.  As I said its all about honesty and not lying to yourself.  And then going on the offensive and doing what you have to do to attack the problems you got.


You teenagers have to realize that you spend too much time around people you don't really like since its high school and everyone is just there.  It gets better and you aren't surrounded by dickriders 24/7 as you grow older.  And people you might not like right now you will like in a few years when they are just a facebook friend you see every now and then and you don't deal with them daily.

Bulldog mentality is key.

Opening up about things that have been bugging you, what makes you feel upset, and just talking is the first step to targeting depression. May I suggest you talk to one of your dad's coworkers? Sometimes it helps to get someone who has no personal connection outside of the office handle these kinds of talks.

talk to someone who's knowledgeable about depression like a counselor or friend who's gone through it. excercise, get outside and absorb that vitamin D (even on cloudy, winter days), push as hard as you can to socialize and get up and moving. it's hard, but if you want to get better you need to do it.

Shut the fuck up, being depressed isn't just looking for sympathy, or feeling sorry for yourself. At all. It's the inability to be happy, it may not even be caused by actions. It's always looming.

Stop yourself in the future while posting about shit you know nothing about.

Nah man.  I've worked with all sorts of mental illnesses.  And know all kinds of people who are on prozac and all that shit.  I get it.  I know what it is.  Its real.  I'm going to try and respond as helpfully as possible I know I can be a total peice of shit asshole on this website.  I hope it helps.  This was my line of work back when I had a job.



So a depressed person has 3 things working against them.  1.  The main biggest thing causing depression.  2.  Natural things that just suck and since you have entered that depressed territory they suck more.  3.  You become your own worst enemy and make shit worse primarily by engaging in self pity and eliciting it from others.



So there are 2 things the depressed person has to do.

1.  REFUSE SYMPATHY FROM SELF OR OTHERS.  But especially yourself.  Just don't feel sorry for yourself at all.  LIKE NOT ONE BIT.


2.  Attack that biggest problem in your life that sucks.  You don't have to change it.  You just need to acknowledge it and make it bother you less.  Create your own illusion or reality and make it go from a big deal to a small deal.  Could be money, could be friends, could be a woman, could be parents, could be self identiy, it could be anything.  Just figure the fuck out what it is (and deep down you will know what it is) and mentally get yourself in a better place in relation to that shitty thing.



Hope this helps.  Its easy for me to give this advice because I see these things in other people and its a lot easier to critique others than oneself.  I'm hardened to this stuff because I feel that everyone in my life at one time or another has set out to destroy me and 90% of the people I know fucking hate me including many relatives so since I'm over that shit I can handle anything.  A teenager is different they have to go to school every day and deal with a million other things.\

Depression is real but you can make things better.  Shrinks are much better for shit like rage/anger than depression btw they are still helpful but use them to vent thats what they are best for.

You bring up some good points but completely neglect the component that often drives depression. The brain is a chemical computer and sometimes it gets out of balance, not because someone wants sympathy or is sad because of a break-up, but because there is a chemical imbalance. End rant.

I've went thru some pretty bad depression espiecally in the first few months of being in Afghanistan. You witness things you never imagined you would and eventually it catches up to you. I didnt really care to talk to anyone. Then I started noticing it with alot of the guys with me and honestly the two things that really helped me was the gym and just sitting and talking to my friends about other stuff takes your mind away from everything. Hopefully it helps and you need someone to talk to hit me up.

You are correct about the chemical inbalance.  These things are very real.  I do think medicine is a short term solution to feel better tomorrow though. 

Long term its up to the person to put themselves in a better place.  Addressing the root cause and basically taking the bull by the horns and creating your own reality for it (either change it or stop caring about it) is a long term solution.

And when shit has hit the fan and you've hit bottom just stay strong and don't feel sorry for yourself because it won't help.  And no one feels sorry for other people human beings honestly aren't that compassionate for each other people do want to help you feel better but at the end of the day they primarily care about themselves and don't really give a shit.

immerse yourself in the things you love, it always helped me. no matter whats going on skiing skydiving and mountain biking are always there for me. when you think you dont feel like doing anything or are too tired to get out of bed. just get the fuck up and do something becasue even though life seems terrible being active and applying your mind towards something other than your depression will make you feel better, maybe not a long term fix but it will make you feel better for the time being. surround yourself with good friends, and step out of your comfort zone. focus on figuring out why you feel the way you do, and how you can fix it... its not the easiest thing but there are people that can help like mentors, counselors, and psychiatrists and psychologists. personally i have found that staying active in the things i love, focusing on the solutions rather than the problems, psychotherapy, and not using mood altering drugs (whether they be illegal or perscribed by a dr.) has worked best for me.

This actually helps a lot. I just have to be honest with myself and realize that its just high school and im gunna have worse problems when im older. That being said in the meantime there's some things I can definitely try to fix. I know this isnt my thread but thanks NS for really helpful answers.

exercise definitely helped me, and skiing. i would cut out any drugs and alcohol until you are in a good place mentally at least. i dont really know how my life changed so drastically, but looking back on how shitty it was in high school im really happy about what ive accomplished. one sentiment i took to heart was just doing one thing to make your life better each day. its not going to change overnight but you will get there eventually
