New York City confiscating rifles and shotguns

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is sending out letters telling gun owners to turn over their rifles and shotguns — or else face the consequences.

New York City’s ban on rifles and shotguns that hold more than five rounds is now being enforced, according to a letter the NYPD is sending out to targeted city gun owners.

“It appears you are in possession of a rifle and/or Shotgun (listed below) that has an ammunition feeding device capable of holding more than five (5) rounds of ammunition. Rifles and shotguns capable of holding more than five (5) rounds of ammunition are unlawful to possess in New York City, as per NYC Administrative Code 10-306 (b).”


“You have the following options,” the letter explains.

“1. Immediately surrender your Rifle and/or Shotgun to your local police precinct, and notify this office of the invoice number. The firearm may be sold or permanently removed from the City of New York thereafter.

2. Permanently remove your Rifle and/or Shotgun from New York City and provide the following…Disposition Report/Registration Certificate…Notarized statement of permanent removal…Utility bill or other proof of residency regarding the address where the firearm will be stored outside the City of New York.

3. You may call to discuss the matter if you believe your firearm is in compliance…”

Departing New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is a major gun-control activist, with his coalition recently sponsoring an ad that depicts an Adam Lanza-type character entering a school full of children.


New York state, meanwhile, passed the NY SAFE Act in 2013 in response to the Sandy Hook shooting. The law, which bans “high-capacity magazines” and puts in place other stringent controls, was signed by governor and 2016 presidential hopeful Andrew Cuomo.

Hello, I am an American. Therefore i need an Ak, M4, two pistols and s shot gun in order to 'defend' my home and myself. It doesn't matter that my country is plagued by gun violence and shooting that claim so many innocent lives every year. But that fact does not matter because the constitution (something that was wrote when blacks were slaves and woman were not considered a human) says i can. In no way could this constitution be obsolete or maybe out of date. I mean hey it isn't like the police can protect me no no no i have to do it myself. Now stop and think. Doesn't this sound so retarded? because hey, from a non american looking at it it seems beyond retarded. How is it a good idea for every person to be armed with stupidly powerful weaponry ? its not a solution its exaggerating the problem. Its high time new gun laws come into place, you guys have needed better ones from a hundred years ago. Don't agree with me? come at me, my facts may not be a 100% correct but hell they will still make a lot more sense than any argument that you got.

funny you say that, because that's pretty much exactly what I have. I don't know if it's so much to protect the home, shotting guns are the next most exciting thing besides hucking jumps and drops skiing.

Wait so now your talking about AN ARMY ( people who are there to protect your country from what ever threats) being on a level playing field with some hick that had some cash to spare at his local walmart? excuse me but i don't really understand your ideology quite right. In my mind the army should have more power than a person who can afford a gun. It is their job to protect to use this weapons, to neutralise threats. You (i don't actually know you keep in mind) are an accountant you push numbers into a calculator, the army blow shit up to keep your country safe. You should not be a match for them.

Looking at your county from an American perspective I can't help but wonder why your economy isn't as great as America's? Why don't you guys have the same level of freedoms not just with guns but likely with freedom of speech. But please continue to criticize the country that has the biggest economic impact on the world, I guess we don't much about anything.

NZ economy. Now if you look on a map you will see that we are the most southern nation in the world. In other words out of the way of pretty much everything. We are an island, the nearest country being Australia which is a 3 hour plane ride away. We also have a population of about 4.5 million, american has a population of 313 million that is roughly 78 times the population of our country plus countless for country size. With this in mind we as a country have to import many goods due to our isolation. In terms of export NZ is the best there is. Fonterra, one of the biggest dairy exporters in the world. Now i couldn't be bothered with find solid facts but, we we produce some of the highest quality milk products for almost every country including AMERICA!!! NZ contributes to at least 30% of the worlds dairy (this is going my memory remember). In the dairy industry we are known for high quality and efficient producing. Many New Zealanders find work helping dairy farms in your country become more efficient. Also we are well known for our lamb industry. Now while we dont produce the most in the world we produce the top quality. Go to paris in the most up scale, fanciest restraints and guess what they will be serving you New Zealand lamb, beef, venison even pork. So with a few examples in mind, yes your economy is better than ours but thats like saying a 28 year old is stronger than a baby. We are just simply not as big as your guys. We do however make Quality products rather than quantity of shit products. Also in terms of economy we aim to keep the NZ dollar low so our exports can be competitive.

do you even understand what our country was founded on/how it was founded? The second amendment has to do with the ability for the people to form a militia. Had it not been for these "hicks" in the woods with muskets that were armed and able to form a well-armed militia, we would not have achieved our independence in 1783. Hence why the second amendment was created. The constitution was to protect the people from the government. The people will always be the underdog, but you're saying we should still be stuck with muskets too because that's what we had back when it was created?
yeah, the military is always going to have the upper hand. Citizens don't have missiles, armed fighter jets, tax funded intelligence... but we're supposed to have limits on guns too?

no. i don't see the point you're trying to make.
its a JUST IN CASE measure. as in, just in case something goes wrong, i have the right (and means) to protect myself. people make the choice and decide that the ability to defend themselves is something they want, so they get a CC license. why is it so hard to understand?

I will admit, my american knowledge is not the greatest. In our country we learn about a lot of different nations history not just our own. To answer your question, yes. Your country has tried the whole "lets let everyone have guns" thing and guess what it has not worked at all. It seems every few months your guys have another school shooting or massacre in some public place. I am saying arming the public is stupid. People are stupid, giving people highly efficient killing machines is even more stupid because people will continue to be stupid and do stupid things. I used the word stupid a lot just then, because hey its stupid.

I understand the logic but it is flawed. So just in case some one comes at you with a gun you will be carrying a highly dangerous weapon down your pants every day of your life. I do not believe that allowing everyone to have a gun, yet alone one they can hide is a good idea. Your putting the law into your own hands but with deadly consequences.

You're retarded. There are 65 million law-abiding gun owners in America and they are not the problem. It's the that one or two people who go shoot up something that are the problem, and if a person is deranged enough to go shoot people then they will get there hands on a gun no matter what, legally or illegally. So suppressing the rights of 65 million people because of that one person is just asinine.

Good work on addressing my argument maybe get more than a middle school education before you come to debate, as for stupid point, guns have been credited as a means of self defense in over 2 million cases a year. a lot of guys I go riding with have concealed carry permits. our motorcycle group is a gun club in disguise. but they rarely ever carry. thing is, these "nutjobs" are mature enough to understand that carrying a weapon isn't something to be taken lightly, and even brandishing it should be avoided at all costs. a guy was on his bike and got chased down by a psycho in a car and he had his gun on him but he still fled to a gas station where luckily there was highway patrol to intervene and he never had to pull out his gun. these CCW holders are more responsible than you think

That doesn't mean "don't change".

Example a new set of human rights are developed and all people born after today live under this set of rights. No one's rights are being taken away but human rights are being changed. Normally it doesn't happen this orderly in history, but they do change.

I love when people who know nothing about American culture, politics or history and don't even live here come into threads like this spewing their victim mentality. It has zero affect on you if I decide carry for the sole purpose of defending myself and my family. I don't go around brandishing a gun at people for any reason.

When it comes down to it the only effective way to stop a person with a gun from harming you is having a gun yourself. When seconds matter and cops are minutes away, I'm not going to sit around and wait.

Separate post from the last. This thread is a perfect spot to talk about this though. Any NY gun owners here need to do whatever they can to get the (un)SAFE act repealed. Donate, join pro gun organizations, go to protests, any little thing you can do to help. Even a bumper sticker. People need to know that this law is complete bullshit and Cuomo needs to know he's fucked next election.

This type of shit is exactly what starts revolutions, the reason we have our 2nd amendment (for those of you who think guns are bad) is for the sole reason to prevent the government from heading towards a dictatorship and taking our freedoms away.

Yes, that involves the old rights being taken away. When something is changed, the older version of it inherently ceases to exist. So yes, the rights are being taken away.

Look at the synonyms in the definition I posted. ABSOLUTE. SACROSANCT. INVIOLABLE, in particular. These mean (albeit somewhat indirectly), unchanging.

You're putting words in my mouth. I never said that rights don't change. I said inalienable rights don't change, because if they do, they are no longer inalienable, and if they are inalienable, then they cannot change.

So no, I don't agree, but that's okay. This is really more of a semantics issue than anything else.

They didn't have rights before they existed so they are not having any rights taken away from them. Also all living people are grandfathered into the original system so their rights are not taken away. All rights are inalienable but the rights still change.

Inalienable does not mean unchanging. And inalienable rights CAN change. It's not only a semantics issue, you're wrong and stubborn and that weighs into your overall argument. Don't ever pursue a career in law, you wouldn't be very good.

To have it said most shotguns hold more than 5 rounds, but most manufacturers are legally required to use a "wood/rubber" stopper that is slid in the shotgun magazine in order to make it hold less rounds. So then as soon as the consumer gets it home they can take it out and boom, 3 shells to 8. So all the people in NYC have this option! HOWEVER it is still completely horseshit that it has come to a time that our government can force us to do these things. We are watching our freedoms being stripped away one at a time, piece by piece.

The last line I can't even comprehend. All rights are inalienable? Are you shitting me? No they aren't, you could've used the fact that all rights are NOT inalienable to prove your original argument that rights can change. But you dropped the ball on that one. No, not ALL rights are inalienable. Certain ones in the Bill of Rights and the Constitution are to American citizens as deemed by the greater ruling authority, but other rights get taken away all the time. VIA CHANGES TO THE LAWS THAT SUPPORT THESE RIGHTS. Hence, inalienable rights cannot be changed since that would TAKE AWAY these rights and change them into something else, thus rendering them NOT INALIENABLE. Inalienable rights cannot be changed, transferred, taken away, or surrendered, period.

And yes, from the vast amount of information you've gleaned from this argument and all the information you know about me, you're totally qualified and informed to come to a decision on whether or not I would have a career in law. Fucking dumbass...

Done with this argument. Hell, the right to bear arms ISN'T even necessarily an inalienable right, so I don't even know why the fuck we're having this irrelevant discussion.
