Summit Boardshop in Lake Elmo, MN is closing in the near future. Really bummed as they carried a lot of great stuff, had multiple sick parks, and put on sick events, but I can't say I'm really surprised. They weren't in a very high traffic location and whenever I went in there weren't many people shopping. RIP :(
that place was legit but like OP, I'm not surprised. seems like someone with very large pockets started the place. the couple times I went there i always thought, how the hell did someone pay for this place? it was a great concept, but was just in a terrible location.
The owner owns that entire strip. Maybe he is going to just rebrand it like he did when it was white wolf and turned it to summit. It is like a catch 22 location everybody sees it front he freeway but you can't get to with easily so you just keep driving.
They haven't posted anything about it yet, but they sent out emails about a pre-announcement sale they're having for customers who have shopped there in the past.
Summit was in a very high traffic locale, and was a profitable business. If they weren't profitable they wouldn't have been able to do all of the different expansions and projects they did over the years (doubling the store size, adding skatepark, expanding skatepark, adding backyard, etc.)... I believe I heard they closed for reasons unbeknownst to everyone but the owner.
The overhead on that place was MASSIVE. I don't think it was profitable. From what I understand, it was a successful dude's pet project and he couldn't justify the cost anymore.
I have a hard time believing a retail store outside of the city pulls in enough revenue to build stuff like that. Building that a place like that is not cheap.
