90 mm brakes on a 101 waisted ski

Will this work? I have Marker Griffon Schizo bindings with 90 mm brakes, and I wanna mount them on my Moment PB&Js that are 101 mm underfoot. The tech at my local shop said that it'd void the warranty, and there's no guarantee they'll work. He says I should buy new brakes, but they're $40 and I'm trying to save money.

So will bending the brakes that much be a bad thing? Is the tech just saying to buy brakes because the shop sells them? Or is he giving technically sound advice?

The tech said bending the brakes will void the warranty? He sounds like a dumbass.

On a similar note, not trying to thread jack, but would it be bad for me to use 130mm brakes on 101mm skis? Like OP said, brakes are expensive

I needed some wider brakes for a pair of look bindings I had and the ski shop that I went through was legit enough to swap my brakes for a bigger pair for free with the cost of the mount. You should look around and see if anyone else could maybe you hook you up like that.

Unfortunately my shop isn't like that.

So would it be bad to bend the brakes to fit? Or should I just get new brakes?

Way too wide. You'll risk catching a brake when getting your skis on edge.

Do you have both the skis and bindings already? If so, have you tried putting the bindings on top of the skis to see how much the brakes would need to be bent if at all?

The bindings are currently mounted on a pair of skis that I was gonna get waxed/tuned, but I just bought the PB&Js yesterday so I'm gonna have them taken off my old skis and mounted on my new ones. So no, I can't do that. But I'm assuming it wouldn't be much.

I just really want to know if there are ANY negative side affects to bending brakes from 90 mm to fit a 101 waisted ski!

My guess is that the brake won't be able to fully deploy because they'll catch on the ski at some point. So if you don't mind running after a ski you should be fine. I can't give any advice on any warranty issues.

You can take off your own bindings in 5 minutes without a trip to the shop. One less pair of skis to carry on your way in.

I've fit "90mm" FKS brakes on skis 98mm without any bending or tweaking at all. I currently have "90mm" FKS brakes on 110mm wide skis. The brakes were not bent, but tweaked out slightly.

I think people forget how small a few millimeters really are. You should be able to get your 90mm brakes to fit with little to no effort. If your shop gives you grief, go somewhere else.

To clarify, my old skis are in the shop, I was getting a new pair of park ski mounted and my old ones waxed/tuned. I bought the PB&Js then called the shop to tell them not to wax/tune my old skis cause I wanted those bindings on my PB&Js. I don't have the PB&Js yet to see how my old brakes will fit, and the bindings are in the shop anyway.

I realize it's only a couple of millimeters, but if they don't fit is it really easy to bend the brake to fit them? I feel as if I've asked this questions a couple times now.

Yes, it is easy to tweak thin metal brakes a few millimeters without fear of breaking them.

Bending is a different story and some brakes need to be handled with a lighter touch. But since you're not dealing with a large difference in width, you should be fine. Just grab a brake and give it a few tugs, I bet you'll like it.
