Help to buy skiis

Hi, the most difficult question I am facing right now while researching the most suitable skiis is the level of skiing competence. I am trying to buy a skii and I read that that pariticular  skii is designed for an experienced novice:))!!!? or... insecure expert. Please help. Also, once you know where you stand on the scale from 1-10 how do you take under consideration the age factor ( power?) which is so diffrent at the age of 30 and later on at the age of 65.

I would recommend going to you local ski shop. The people there are usually very helpful.

read it all before opening this thread, I also went to the stores, spoke to sales guyes, read testers opinions and still do not know which skii is good for me. I am 58, recreational skiier, athletic, mostly eastern canada but one week in Rockies, or similar, 120 lb fully dressed, non-agressive but like ice and off trails, used to ski 8 hr a day when younger now 3-4 and need a brake. I have good balance and I skii with advanced skiiers. On fresh snow I use snowboard, which I have no skill use on ice.

Have you looked at some of line's skis? I have never tried their women's ski's... Seeing as I am a guy... but every ski I have tried from them, I have loved. Are you looking for an actually ski made for women, or are you okay skiing a mens ski? I would still recommend having an in depth conversation about it with the sale guys but we can probably help you narrow down the choices.

From this i've gathered that you'll need something that is good for all-mountain skiing. Probably something with camber and rocker so you still have edge on icy spots but can still handle off-trail skiing. Something that is not too wide since you have a board for that. So maybe something with a waist around 95-105. I would recommend the atomic access or armada's tstw. I know for a fact that the access is an easy ski to ride, since I spent two years on them. Also my grandpa uses them for damn near everything and he can barely walk. The atomic century might be another thing to look at as well.

I used to live in NY/Vermont, so I know the terrain you will be on most of the time. Most shops in your area will probably point you in the direction of a system carving ski (where the binding are integrated into the ski) with a waist width of about 75-85mm. While this may work for you, I would ask you the following:

How often do you ski off trail? 20% 50% 80%?
If the ski made skiing off trail easier, would that be something of interest?
Are you looking for super edge grip on ice and stability at speed?
Do you like making short quick turns, or a more gradual turn shape?

If you answer these questions, we can point you in the direction of a few things.

2.I have always had unisex skiis, only recently VOLKL advertise line of skiis made for women exclusively. Are the lighter, require less power with the same grip, lower speed ...?

3. In depth conversation. Yes, that is why I am hear. More questions you ask me than better I can converse IN THE STORE with the guy who knows the skii but has no idea how I skii ( ps my last skiis where ok but where too soft ex)

1.very seldom, and as you said it would be off -groomed trail in Blue Mountain or similar unless we go to Wistler where for the fresh snow I would have snow board. So I would stick to 20% or less

difficult question. 'at speed'? 120lb and 58y  bones, how fast will I go this year and next few years? This question is my biggest dilemma. I love speed so yes I would love to have a good grip and control on typical eastearn slope diamond one or two, but if I get the ski harder than I can handle  I will have trouble to ski. My friend bought the skiis based on the advise given in the skii shop, and we ended up wiht his skiis which where to soft for me and to hard for him.

Thank you for your comments. My goal is to keep skiing as long as I can. All my aging friends stopped skiing. I love skiing and I love winter fun that comes with skiing. I don't want beginners skiis, but I need skiis that help me to skii next five years. Sounds silly?

95-105 looks pretty wide for groomed and ice conditions. Checked both, very usefull. Thank you for your time.
