haul ass. skis with good edges and nicely waxed bases help alot as well. i suck at pipe, considering i don't have one to practice on or hit etc. but when i have had the opportunity to hit one at a bigger resort, the one thing i learned is just to keep ur speed up as much as possible, first couple times i thought i was going fast enough when i dropped but barely got outa the pipe. so i basically doubled my speed and actually caught some decent hang time ! so fun. wish i had one to practice on at my mountain but i don't, so i don't know how good that advice is, more of like what my experience was like and how i learned to boost out of the pipe. hold a mean edge and haul ass. oh and have fun. always helps !
don't worry about the takeoff, don't jump actively, let the transition do the work.
others in this thread said different, but i'd suggest to start slowly to get a feeling for the transition. focus on your body position, avoid leaning back or forward.
just to repeat myself. don't jump if you're a pipe beginner, get a feel for it first.
Learn to carve. If you can carve very well in a balanced stance, your pipe skiing will improve. If you're a park rat and can hardly actually ski then you will never be able to maintain speed in a halfpipe. Other than that just sack up and ski fast. don't dump speed by carving up the wall, instead, try to take off at the lip on your downhill edge.
