The NS community needs to stop disrespecting the legends of the sport

Sometimes I feel like these internet communities are killing legends.

In skateboarding you have people who pioneered the sport and have the undying respect and love of the community they helped build, as well as a place in it for as long as they want. People aren't gonna go out and shit talk Mark Gonzales if he makes a whacky hipster fashion video because that guy has done so much for the sport that he can do whatever the fuck he wants. People skate the way they do today because Mark Gonzales did what he did, as well as countless other innovators that they know and respect for it.

I think its fucked up how people on this site and the ski community in general disrespect and shit on legends of the sport.

Mickael Deschenaux got shit talked on this site for years before Casabon showed him the respect he deserved and everyone started following suit. You might not even realize it, but you ski park the way you do today because of Mickael Deschenaux. Maybe you haven't even seen one of his parts before, but chances are one of your favorite skiers was inspired by Mick D, emulated his skiing, and you in turn emulated that kid.

You gotta think about your favorite skier's favorite skier.

The inspirations to the generation that you are inspired by.

They deserve your respect.

Tanner Hall is one of those legends, and its insane to me that kids can jump on this hate bandwagon so easily. They have no idea what hes about because they don't understand his legacy, and what he has done for this sport. I don't care if its a joke or all in good fun or whatever pretense you try to put on this shit, its not something you do to a legacy of someone who shaped the sport you are most passionate about.

Tanner Hall is part of the reason you ski the way you do today, whether you realize it or not.

To me its fucked up how some of the ski innovators wind up. Mickeal never got what he deserved and hes not really in the game anymore. Every piece of Tanner coverage getting shit on by a bunch of clueless kids. Who knows, maybe Heed could have been a legend but he got burnt out by the community before he really had a chance to shine.

Disrespecting the people who built the sport is bad for it. Go do some homework, Iberg has posted up most of his videos go watch them. Know and respect the history of the skiing you love.

Respect is earned not given and can be lost pretty easily. The amount of shit Tanner Hall has talked on other skiers and the industry... Let's just say he dug himself a deep fucking hole and has earned that disrespect.

I know you're not as involved in the ski industry anymore Tom, and I fully agree with respecting your roots, but just listen to the shit that comes out of Tanner's mouth and try to tell me you still respect him? Respect the skiing always, but not the man anymore.

Being a legend doesn't give you a free pass on being a beligerant asshole.

What has he done for the sport exactly to demand respect?  Does anyone think that skiing wouldn't be in the exact same spot now if he hadn't been around?  Just because you are the first to do something doesn't mean another wouldn't have done it soon after if you weren't around.  There are some pretty gnarly double front flips and other crazy lines Seth Morrison has hit that might not be done again, ever.  That's legendary status.  The problem is that Tanner was in a position to bring more money and exposure  to the sport, but fucked up and couldn't become a Shawn White or Tony Hawk figure. 

Skiing is fun and soulful.  I don't really care about growing the popularity of it, but if you are getting paid to ski, you should care and he's a terrible roll model.  Any professional athlete needs to contribute by either increased sales to a brand or sport, increased wins to a team, increased popularity in a sport, or increased visibility.  He might have the increased visibility, but it's not the correct visibility because it's mostly negative and revolves around internet dick picks, getting kicked out of bars, smoking the doobies, talking in a fake jamaican accent, and talking shit about other pro skiers who are trying to make something out of themselves.

for lack of a better term, the legends of the sport are basically disrespecting themselves. i mean look at tanner hall he is making an ass of himself, but that has really been part of his persona. so its hard to disrespect them.

The only good things that the dude brought to the sport were hitting Chads Gap switch and causing some exciting competition in the halfpipe scene for a couple of years. Then he became a drug addict, claimed that he got his shit together, and then proceeded to bash people in the industry.

He's nothing more than a punk who needs to just bow out.

The park skiing scene is pathetic these days.

At least Tanner didnt sink into the hole Mik did. Mik doesn't even ski anymore, at least Tanner is trying to hold his own.

But I geuss thats just cuz Tanner went all Ras all of a sudden and Mik stayed all "gangster".

This thread is basically just about Tanner, he's the only legend that really gets any disrespect.

Legends like Candide, Pep, JP, JF, Pollard don't get any hate whatsoever because they are humble, positive people, and only bring good things to the sport.

I grew up watching tanner he's what got me in to skiing, while his personality can be sometimes questionable(almost always hysterical) I will always respect what he's done for our community. He was a pioneer, at 12 yrs old (10 yrs ago) how could you not idolize the fcking SKIBOSS!

Respect or don't respect? Pros aren't logging on to NS to have a bunch of tweens lick their nuts. If you don't like what Tanner or any other pro says or does, that's your prerogative. Every once in awhile there seems to be a movement to make NS more PC. The day that happens is the day I log off for good.

Everyone is going to get shit on from the NS Community eventually. You have two choices. You can get butt hurt about it and start your own website where any post that isn't considered positive and spiritually uplifting is deleted; or you can learn now to not take yourself so seriously.

It seems logical that if you are on this site, you might respect where it came from. If it weren't for a handful of lunatics over the years, we would not be doing what we are today. Still, people need to bitch, and some people choose to bitch because the "legends" of the sport aren't living up to their expectations. I see this as slightly annoying but necessary.

"Why can't we all just get along"? We can't, we won't, we shouldn't and NS would suck if we did. If you really want to be politically correct, go find your identical twin or doppelganger and tell them they are fuckin ugly.
