The NS community needs to stop disrespecting the legends of the sport

Sometimes I feel like these internet communities are killing legends.

In skateboarding you have people who pioneered the sport and have the undying respect and love of the community they helped build, as well as a place in it for as long as they want. People aren't gonna go out and shit talk Mark Gonzales if he makes a whacky hipster fashion video because that guy has done so much for the sport that he can do whatever the fuck he wants. People skate the way they do today because Mark Gonzales did what he did, as well as countless other innovators that they know and respect for it.

I think its fucked up how people on this site and the ski community in general disrespect and shit on legends of the sport.

Mickael Deschenaux got shit talked on this site for years before Casabon showed him the respect he deserved and everyone started following suit. You might not even realize it, but you ski park the way you do today because of Mickael Deschenaux. Maybe you haven't even seen one of his parts before, but chances are one of your favorite skiers was inspired by Mick D, emulated his skiing, and you in turn emulated that kid.

You gotta think about your favorite skier's favorite skier.

The inspirations to the generation that you are inspired by.

They deserve your respect.

Tanner Hall is one of those legends, and its insane to me that kids can jump on this hate bandwagon so easily. They have no idea what hes about because they don't understand his legacy, and what he has done for this sport. I don't care if its a joke or all in good fun or whatever pretense you try to put on this shit, its not something you do to a legacy of someone who shaped the sport you are most passionate about.

Tanner Hall is part of the reason you ski the way you do today, whether you realize it or not.

To me its fucked up how some of the ski innovators wind up. Mickeal never got what he deserved and hes not really in the game anymore. Every piece of Tanner coverage getting shit on by a bunch of clueless kids. Who knows, maybe Heed could have been a legend but he got burnt out by the community before he really had a chance to shine.

Disrespecting the people who built the sport is bad for it. Go do some homework, Iberg has posted up most of his videos go watch them. Know and respect the history of the skiing you love.

I have immense respect for Tanner and his opinions on skiing and its current state even if I disagree with them, however I see absolutely no reason for me to respect him when he says absolutely stupid shit that has is fringe related to skiing. Its great and all that he is a legend and I don't see him going away very soon but I would think that if he was a respectful super down to earth guy then the community would treat him with more respect than he currently has.

This thread is the perfect example of the "me first" generation, and how I was raised completely differently.

See, there is NO ONE who DESERVES my respect. However...there are many, many people who have EARNED my respect. By their words, actions, and how they carry themselves.

Unfortunately, some of these "legends" act and talk in ways so poor that I have no reason to give them the respect you so much demand I do.

yes, they are REAL men with REAL emotions... yet they probably REALLY dont give a flippity flying fuck what a bunch of children on Newschoolers think. I've noticed in my short time actually being involved here that during Tanner discussion, he will show up and comment something wicked funny (or disrespectful/out-of-line, however you see it....) and that's it. Cuz he don't careeee he doesn't have time to be arguing on the internet like us losers. That's why he's so good at skiing, you think he's standing at the top of a mountain or park thinking, gee i hope this looks good for all those kids on Newschoolers... NO. He's skiing for himself and you all just happen to notice. So why should he act a certain way just because people are watching? Even if you don't like his behavior, you gotta give him props for keepin it REAL.

And by the way even if he seems like a dick he really cares about other people, just throwin that out there. One time I saw this kid who did not land a jump and pretty much stabbed his eye out, and Tanner intermediately sprinted to the bottom of the jump and was comforting him while waiting for ski patrol. Although he seems all abrasive and stuff, in an emergency his true colors show that he's actually a decent human being. Let him have some fun, he's not hurting anyone.

I'll always miss when I first joined NS, it was so much more laid back. You didn't have to worry about getting banned for disagreeing with someone or jokingly using "questionable" words such as faggot. I understand why it needs to be done with all the new sponsors and such I just miss it.

Apparently the guy that started it just wanted to find a husband he could ski with, I think thats pretty legit. How stoked would you be to marry an awesome girl that just happened to be able to shred? LGBT people flock to big cities because there are more gathering spaces for them and a more friendly atmosphere than a small rural ski-town. I think its cool that he's enabling LGBT shredders to get together and meet like-minded folk.

There are so many pros out there that I respect so much for what they do and how they act, but i think great achievements in a sport or for a community start to cancel out when the guy is being a big dumbass...

just like theres some music I find pretty good, but I just can't fucking listen to it cos of the guy that makes it (i.e lil wayne, altho most of his music is shit). And theres tons more of examples, like a football player (yh i know I'm european) like Ribery (for those who know) that has done a lot for the sport on a skill and performance level, but is a complete dickhead so most football fans hate him.

I think theres a point where you can't ignore someone's opinion and behaviour anymore just cos they're insane at what you love and improve it a lot.

On another note, I think freeskiing is an awesome state of mind and there isn't really any pros that should be hated or act like complete money-loving-huge-ego-douchebags. Sure i disagree with a bunch, like hood crew for example: they have some sick segs but i don't think they have moral principles in the right places sometimes. But its not bad enough for me to hate them at all!

It's obvious we're talking about Tanner here and I think he's an exception: He did so much for the sport, and thats fucking undeniable, so to all the 12yrolds that hate on him without even knowing who Tanner really is, fuck you.

I think Tanner went through really hard times (even if he says he's stoke for shit, fuck the olympics n all), after his injury, he kinda got too old to still be the winner and pioneer he once was (and fair enough, he's been doing for the sport for years) and not being able to compete (even he says it's a completely personal choice)in the olympics must be hard too.

I think Tanner is trying to find a place in the modern free ski world (riding with younger thug looking skiers, ditching the poles, going back to big mountain, calling himself ski boss...) and if he ever reads this, he needs to know that none of it fucking matters. He took freeskiing to a whole new level and as long as he's having fun and sharing the love with the free ski community, who gives a fuck if he's too old to compete? So yeah, hate on him for hating on park, but what would you do in his place? Must be pretty fucking hard realising that park is getting pretty challenging with all the future spinners and that there's a whole bunch of hate for his lifestyle and all...

So end of the line, I think people like op are getting pissed for the wrong reasons: most of the haters here are just the haters you get in any other forum, so who gives a shit about them? People who have more complex opinions and hating reasons for Tanner for example probably don't realise how hard it is to be some kind of washed out super god of skiing who's listened by the whole community.

One thing tho, Tanner should stop trolling so much, yeah the whole caps lock thing is funny, but hating for hating is just degrading the image of someone that will always stay the biggest gift free ski has received in many people's heart.

first, i think pipe munkey is spot on- if you are acting like douche, you will be judged like one. second, we have this thing called rational thought and it gives us the ability to exercise something known as "self control". Tanner being the amazing, ground breaking athlete that he is does not exonerate himself from using his brain and exercising some self control. Thirdly, Tanner does not love skiing more than anything- he loves his version of skiing more than anything, and his actions show this. He clearly does not respect other versions of skiing, and time and time again disrespects his fellow freeskiers.

Tanner is a revolutionary athlete in our sport, but when he acts like fucking douche canoe, I will think he is a fucking douche canoe.

But after reading through this thread, I think it really shows the wide range of people within our small sport. I won't make this long because I'm on mobile, but look at how different people feel on this one example (talking about tanner) this is something to be said about his contribution to the sport, he certainly has earned that. However, his antics and personality are something slightly separated from that. Any way you look at it, tanner is an important person to this community for one reason or another, I feel however that he does not need to be put on a pedestal for being a person. After being fortunate enough to move to salt lake and interact with many people that are looked up to in our sport, they're all just regular people stoked on skiing. Tanners antics make me not want to associate with him as a person, but I can certainly admire his skiing serperately from that. Basically, do what you love, but don't expect respect for it, and people of similar attitudes will be drawn to you. Keep free skiing weird, but do it your own way and try not to care too much about what other think. Go have fun.

THall is definitely out being SKIBOSS right now blazin in Colorado and killing it everyday, not giving two fucks about who respects who and for what reasons. I respect him for this reason, the dude just loves to ski and be in your face, and look, he's got a legendary career to show for it and still puts out hype content. THall, Mik D, and CR were my favorite skiers right when they were blowin up, but if I had got into freestyle say 5 years later when guys like Wallisch, Wesson, Stept dudes started getting big, I probably would have some disconnect with the older gen, because where I can watch though all the older videos and see where the ideas and inspiration for tricks came from, some maybe haven't seen them at all, and the younger guys were throwing more innovative shit. any disrespect would just be a result of this disconnect. THall's definitely got hater blockers on at all times though.

Tanner definitely gives a fuck. Deep down, he's super self conscious. Hence the need to lash out and bash his fellow athletes that are moving forward in the competition scene that he once loved and participated in.

I've been watching Tanner since he was a part of the chronic crew. When he was on top of the game he was a sick skier and I looked up to him. I idolized him. Now I believe he is one of the worst people possible to represent our sport. All he does is complain about other skiers, the olympics and everything in between. He spreads so much hate on this site, instead of showing stoke about the good going on in the sport. This is a very important year for us as freeskiers with the olympics happening, and he is hating on it so much in reason because he's being a little bitch about not making the team. The hate on Tanner is well-deserved and there are many other skiers out there who deserve our idolization a lot more.

I agree that the legends should be respected. In my opinion, after watching that documentary of CRJ I have so much more respect for that man than for someone like Tanner. CR was obviously a huge influence on the sport as was Tanner, but to help explain why CR makes me love this sport i will leave these two videos here

See, the word "legend" to me implies a sort of mythic quality that has an air of mystery to it. Tanner has always been so much in everyone's faces that the term doesn't really apply. He's probably the most important skier ever in terms of the park and pipe side of freeskiing, but legend... just doesn't do it for me. Everyone's always known Tanner's views on just about everything involved in the industry, he's not shy about them. For me, the legends of the sport are guys like Pollard, Seth, and obviously JP, who have contributed similarly but don't have that same profile.

Oh and Tom McKay. What a legend that guy was.

The NS community just needs to stop being such little cunts, like seriously so much bitching about the most stupid things. So many people here (and im going to refrain from calling you all 12 year olds because I'm sure you're not) are on some sort of high horse of superiority.

Seeing people quote tanner and say shit like " I respect you, but, your behaviour blah blah blah" grow a dick and shut up.

Wait....you value ski ability above personality?? Someone can be an utter cunt, but it's okay because he "throws down"? Surely being able to ski doesn't justify behavior?? Surely the world would be better if it were filled with more decent people than better riders??

Also, when such a person steps outside our TINY little freeskier niche community, he will have NO respect and no one will understand his talent and all that's left...is a cunt.

I disagree with you on the "high horse" mentality. I think its actually quite the opposite. Like a really obsessive fan boy mentality. De-humanizing other human beings just because they are good at one thing: skiing. the majority of pro's or even "legends" of the sport don't see themselves on the pedestals they are put up on by all of the fans on NS. Bumping threads from 2007 to embarrass someone who is now a "pro"? its insane, and I don't think it comes from being up on a high horse, but putting other regular people up on a high horse. Expecting these people who have extraordinary qualities charging lines and hitting big jumps to ALSO have extraordinary qualities on the internet, at the coffee shop, at the strip club, at your dads house, at your moms vagina, on your friends lawn.... its wild.

Mark Gonzales gave ZERO FUCKS about what anyone had to say about the way he skated or the tricks he did. HE JUST SKATED. Nobody gives two fucks about how skateboarders present themselves or the lifestyles they live. (other than the men in suits cutting their checks, and thats why there are skateboarders like Nyjah, P.Rod, Tony Hawk, ect. to show that skateboarding can be for everyone and anyone)

All they care about is skateboarding. Unlike skiing where a good chunk of the community are wealthy kids following trends, that would rather look the part than go out and actually go ski and have fun! I Agree with you that Mic D didn't get the respect or recognition that he deserved. Theres lots of people that never do. There's numerous interviews where people like the gonz have said sometimes the really good skaters that do hard tricks and really innovative in skateboarding never get the recognition they deserve just because people don't like them and their stuff doesn't sell and they can't make a living off of it.

Look up Mike Shimike on YouTube he was my favorite skier for a long time he rode for Salomon way back when and because he smoked weed and wasn't marketable everyone hated on him (SIMILAR NOT THE SAME SITUATION AS MIC D)

Mic D is a perfect example. Newschoolers isn't the place to look for sympathy for how sick Mic D is, because newschoolers has created the bread of Jiberish/supreme/tall t wearing kids that want nothing to do with skiing other than to talk about skiing rather than go ski.

Skiing and skateboarding shouldn't be compared in a way because they're so different but so similar. Just a personal opinion. But thats Life. Some people make it, some don't thats just the way it is. People need to stop think some much on how to get sponsored as well as what every other skier is doing, and go appreciate skiing for how fucking awesome it is.

Depends on what I'm respecting them for. If I'm respecting them for the athletic talent that they have contributed to a sport then sure... i could give two shits on what their personality is all about.

If I'm evaluating the person's contribution to society as a whole - minus that sport - then I would take into account how they carry themselves and what they say.

It all depends on what you're respecting someone for.

He talks so much about "being a better person" in like a lion. Now all he does is berate people who are trying to make an Olympic dream come true and being extremely disrespectful to lgbt skiers groups who are supportive of everything he has done for the support. He's a heck of an athlete but he goes back on what he says so much and acts like such a joke he makes it really hard for people to respect him, even within our community.

Also you can't demand that somebody respects a person. That shit is earned. Honestly I feel like tanner hall is generally pretty well respected anyway.

If Tanner Posts something dumb and people call him out that to be expected. People aren't targeting him, it'd be the same if anyone did it. I think you're blowing it out of proportion and getting too butthurt. I really don't even think he get's that much hate.

A couple of call out threads is hardly the end of the world. Far worse shit happens to people all the time.
