Gopro filming help

Hey ns. Inb4 gopro's for gapers, my friend and i didnt wana use his dslr in the park, dont wana break it (btw, do you guys just use dslr and be extra careful or is there some kinda tough/waterproof case?)

So most of our footage will be done with a hero 2. I dont like pov unless its kinda odd shots (like gopro on ski while big cork3 can b cool) or by Candide, so most of the filming will be follow shots and a few stills.

I know glidecams make edits 10x better so: should i make my own? Get a cheap one (most of them are fucking expensive). Any other cheap stabilasation tips you could give me?


Tl;dr: I need tips on how to shoot Follow Shots with a a gopro so that i doesnt look completly shit.

Dont bother with a glidecam for a gopro, the gopro isn't heavy enough for it to actually work. As to your question about DSLRs in the park, I don't know anyone who uses a waterproof case. You just gotta be careful. Also I have insurance on mine so that if anything happens they will repair/replace it. And honestly if you get something thats at least a little weather resistant some snow isn't going to hurt it, you just brush it off if it gets hit with some.

As for following shots with a gopro, buy a handlebar mount, and put it on the end of a pole, that will help to stabilize the shot a little bit, as well as enabling you to get the camera closer to the subject which is good with the wide angle.

thanks for that^

the problem with the dslr isn't really the snow, it's that one of us will have to carry it all day and it'll be a pain not being able to do any risky tricks in case we fall and break it...I guess we could film for one day and be careful when we have it in the bag, but I don't think we would get that much better shots (not talking bout quality here).

I've seen a few go pro edits with and without glide cam and they do make quite a big difference, like the one with are actually watchable...

Any tips apart from the pole mount for a better stabilisation?? I could make a fig rig for like 40$, would that help??

What DSLR do you have? We have cannon 7 and 5d's and the body on them is pretty water proof. We've never really been worried about getting them wet. The only time we ever tried to keep them covered was when we were in mt baker filming and it was super wet snow.

I don't use a gopro, but for my contour if you want to do something like that you basically just gotta add weight to steady your hand. Personally, I have this little guerillapod mini articulating tripod that you can bend one of the legs up to make a half decent handle. I'm not saying do this because there are better options but that's what I do and for no additional cost its a lot better than nothing.

@saga, thanks for the useful info! my friend has a 60d i think.

I've been looking at all those steadicam handles, they seem pretty good. Does anyone know one that could be used for a dslr and a go pro for under 125$?

Do you use anything for your gopro stabilisation wise?


Again, what i need is something relatively cheap that will make a mostly go pro filmed with mostly follow shots watchable. I already have a pole mount, but it's still quite wobbly

just use is dslr i take mine out on the daily in snow and all conditions it works great i have dropped it in snow and its still fine i keep a rag with me tho so just use his dslr

thanks but this thread is more about stabilisation systems: even if we do end up filming a few days with his (which probs won't happen, his dslr is quite new and i get how he wants to be able to take risks, not always thinking how he could fall on the cam) I need tips on what to get for a go pro/maybe usable for the dslr too.

Anyone used the steadicam smoother before? seems a bit overprice imo, but does the job well, it looks like.

For cheap stabilization you could use just a monopod or a skate handle. I have used both skiing before and they worked fine. It's no glide cam but it does make it quite a bit better.

ill probably get either that iglide (+k for that bro) or the steadicam smoothee. Anyone knows which one is better? Any other small glide cams steadicams a bit cheaper?
