Gear talk people of Newschoolers.... you are the ones who can help us in our quest.

I have a dream that we can compile the most exhaustive and accurate database of ski gear known to man... and we can match that with real, honest opinions from actual users.

I'm tired of less than honest ski reviews tainted by sponsors, and I'm tired of not being able to easily search for this stuff. We have put an immense amount of work into our new system, and its ready for you to start really pushing things into it.

We've made it extremely easy to review stuff, so you can keep it simple or you can go deep.

Those who are successful within our review system, and end up being really helpful/popular with what they write can begin to qualify for our Featured reviewer program. Being a part of this program will tap you into a wealth of new gear, and you will be a member of an elite team waging war at the frontlines of quality gear review.

Wherever you can, encourage others to do the same. Its simple to whip out your phone and tap out a super quick review, and even if people don't write anything in-depth, having more data in the system helps everyone.

Please also note that this is still in public beta, so there will be bugs and tweaks we need to make. Try to use everything in there as much as possible, and share your thoughts on what is needed so we can make adjustments.

Great so far, but a few suggestions.

For boots, add a few categories like fit type (performance, all day skiing, touring, etc) rather than comfort which is too subjective IMO. Also add things for foot type (high arch, wide foot, narrow ankle, etc) if possible.

Might also help to break the review up into a section labeled Things I liked, Things I didnt like, and Overall Recommendation.

I still think those categories are bit too subjective... it might be better to group them by "playground", for example: Race, All Mountain, Park/Urban, Powder since there are now legitimate features on boots that bring real benefit to each of these areas.

Would be good to see a Narrow, Medium, Wide slide bar for last width. Same for Soft, Medium, Hard for flexes.

It would also be good to show what gear and body type the reviewer currently has, just so the readers can put the reviewer's opinion into perspective.

I think the last part is very important.  To be useful we need to know about who is reviewing the gear. Its sort of useless unless there is plenty of info about the reviewer so you can compare your self to them.

And yes id like to see more tech  specs. Last width ect. Way to much in the review section is far to subjective at the moment.

Even better.

Especially for the narrow, medium, wide and the flex selection.

I personally like how Blister sets up the reviewers "history" in regards to boots, bindings, likes, dislikes, etc. A similar format wouldnt be a bad idea.

Oh buddy, this is so much better than the old system! I agree that there should be more options as far as what kind of terrain the product is made for, and the boot fit approximation would be helpful too

Also, in th review when you go to view it the slider bar system is a little confusing for some of the categories, maybe a bar graph would be better? Or just a change in color scheme?

Super stoked on this! This will be a great source of information for customers to get an idea of what products fit their needs, but it will also help companies improve their products through some good solid unbiased critiques. Should be interesting on how much an affect Newschoolers review will have on product innovations in the future...

I am all for honest ski reviews, it sucks when they are tainted by less than credible sources that worse yet take money for the review...practically paid for advertising space. With that said http://blistergearreview.com has started to do just that. They take absolutely no money from companies and put out some damn honest reviews!

there already is. kindof...

You just have to go to the users profile and see their Gear tab or their Reviews tab. But no body type or anything.

I plan on doing a bunch of in depth reviews at the end of the season on my gear in a format very similar to Blister Gear Review's format with the short info about the reviewer at the beginning.

Oh, I'll review the skis I ride ;D Seruoiusly though, once I can get some days on snow I'll update and add reviews of the gear I have. If a lot of people do it should make for a great end result.

Is this mostly for new gear? Or do people still care about older stuff? I guess it's good if people are just looking at the company right?

Is there an easy way to go back an edit a review you've already made?

Also the slider for Park vs Powder skis doesn't really make sense and is hard to show which is which, maybe make that more intuitive or strait forward.

Overall though I'm very happy to see more reviews and hopefully the community will go on and contribute their opinions on the gear they own.

There's been talk of a divider between the orange and blue lines to indicated which side the reviewer is biasing to. That would make the whole system clearer and I'd imagine it will happen when they can get around to it. As it is now, it can definitely get confusing especially if the reviewer is putting the slider to the extreme left or extreme right.

I still love it, I've reviewed 13 items so far, got a list of more stuff to review once I start using it, it's super easy to use and I'm really hoping it eventually cuts down on some of the "what do you think about ___?" threads over time.

Can't figure out how to edit my reviews... don't know if that's even possible, but it should be. I didn't see the "upload image" box so my review doesn't have any photo as of now.

Another Idea:

Add upvoting and downvoting to the gear so that what the community thinks are the best reviews rise to the top and people that write an incoherent or troll review are hidden or lowered in prominence. This will obviously lead to some fanboying around certain brands, but I feel like their is usually reason for that people being obsessed about a brand in the first place.

You mean the "Review Ratings"? Cause that's already there (right side, under "product information"). You can also up/down vote comments on reviews (like in the forums).

As far as deleting pictures...I have no clue.

This is extremely necessary. There are so many bullshit reviews though. Writing a sentence or two about how you loved the ski and it did everything great is not a review. Almost nothing in this world will do everything great. Put some time into the review, write about the positives and negatives. Everything is also very subjective, so it is difficult to get factual information.

Asking for the reviewers height and weight should be necessary. For my weight quite a few skis go into wheelie mode when I land slightly back seat.

I think this is a great idea. Crowd-sourced reviews for people to peruse. Solid.

But... seriously, as has been pointed out Blister Gear Review does some solid THOROUGH reviews of skis, boots, bindings, etc. They've also got a lot of great articles on the technical aspects of gear.
