Very confused on crops

If im trying to get a crop like this which looks like a 1.6x? Do I
A.) Shoot with the crop
B.) shoot full and later crop in editing
Very very dumb question but it had to be asked sometime, and sorry for the bombardment of threads in M&A recently but iv'e been trying to become a better filmer and editer.

cropping whilst editing either
a)takes out a portion
b)shrinks it down to fit inside the new portion
no real reason to crop while filming, if that is even possible

er if you have a full frame camera, just crop out what you dont want in post? im not really sure what youre trying to ask.

I have never heard of a camera that shoots 1.6:1, so I don't think you don't have much of a choice. As far as I know, that's only an older computer monitor aspect ratio.

An easy way to get a cropped look is to tape off your viewfinder in the crop you want to shoot.  When you get it into your editing program just drop two black bars (top and bottom) over your timeline to match the desired crop.

Okay.


Cropping off the video has nothing to do with your camera and 1.6x crop.

That image has a frame ratio 2.35:1, a normal hd screen is 16:9.

To achieve this crop, export your image as 1920x816 if you're shooting 1080, 1280x544 if you're shooting 720. Make sure if you're using quicktime/final cut to "preserve aspect ratio via crop" or if you're exporting from premiere that the drop down on the top left says "scale to fill"

To answer your question, you shoot full 720 or full 1080 then crop when your export your video to said ^ specs
