Was going to post this last night but forgot to.


Think about this-


The dude was in the bathroom taking a shit and suddenly the ship started sinking super fast, he ends up in an airpocket in the wrecked ship 30m under the water, without food or water for 3 days... in pitch black.. 0 light.


Crazy.

That would definitely suck. How did they find him? Was it luck, or was there a recovery team searching for him?

Recovery team looking for the bodies. The raw 15 minute video is better, the dude is swimming in murky ass water for 5 minutes and then out of no where this hand just grabs him. Later in an interview the guy was like "Yea I didnt want to freak him out in case he had a dive knife and was going to stab me"

My old man sent this to me a day or so ago. We do a lot of search and rescue diving and this just blows my mind. Ican't even begin to imagine the psychological mind fuck that dude endured.

Everybody always thinks this, but ocean water has a ton of dissolved oxygen in it, so through osmosis a balance would be kept in his air pocket. He breathed the air that was in the water sort of like a fish

there is actually decent light 30m down, but of course being inside the ship obviously dampens it. i've been thinking about this a lot and i wonder if i could have made it out. i wonder how deep in the ship he was?

of course, he's black, and we all know black people can't swim, so i'm assuming that's why he didn't try.

That would just be illogical. If you tried to swim you would attempt to ascend as quick as possible, But without slowly letter the pressure levels decrease you would form nitrogen bubbles in your blood giving you the bends which in turn kill you.

I'm not saying it's logical, just saying if given the small chance of surviving the ascent vs dying down there, I'd obviously try to swim. The patience of this dude is impressive.

No actually not. You can only get decompression sickness if you are breathing compressed air, i.e when scuba diving. If you take on big breath in, no matter how deep you go, or ascend from, it wouldn't happen because you are not breathing in on the way up.

he was breathing compressed air. that air pocket in the boat at the bottom of the ocean was under pressure...pressure greater than at sea level.

I'd imagine it would be pretty difficult to navigate your way through a capsized sunken ship in pitch black to swim 30m to the surface. And then float in the middle of the ocean for who knows how long

I think the ship is 80m underwater so its a long way to swim back up, thats only if you can navigate your way out of that boat in pitch black. I think its a non starter tbh. Amazing will power by the chef to hold tight, i imagine alot of people would of taken the plunge after 1-2 days and drowned.

no, it was only in about 30 meters of water, or 100 feet. there is still plenty of light at 100 feet and it's very doable to swim to the surface from 100 feet down. the issue would be getting out of the boat....and the fact that he's black, so he probably can't swim to begin with.

on that note, why is it that black people (in general) can't swim?

ah you're right on that one bud, i don't know that much about diving and decompression but i think you would still need to stop once or twice when coming up from 100ft or risk getting DCS. If he was to make it out the boat and swim straight up to the surface, how bad would the bends effect him? is it survivable?

He would have died, its on yahoo. He needed to wait around like 60 minutes in a chamber thing before surfacing for real cause if he imminedntly went to the surface he would have died.

if he had broken for the surface relatively quickly after getting to the bottom, the bends risk would be minimal. It became an issue because he had been down there for so long.

any idea how they decompressed this dude ?
1 hour at 30m will give you almost an hour of decotime on regulair air so i wonder, would they've given him enriched air at first to reduce his saturation level and then still made deco stops? or would they've pulled him straight up and into the deco chamber ?

i am an ROV operator on a ship off nigeria. Where this happened the water is murkey as fuck and i can almost guarantee there would be hardly any light penetration at 30m. specially inside a ship. i would assume they took him to the diving bell and decompressed him with the rescue divers.

Also this happened around 6 months ago. weird that its making news all of the sudden.
