How to defend a running red light ticket

ran a red light the other day heading up to the mountain. It was early morning and the roads were still icy.
it was in a few towns over from my hometown and i needed to head back to school so i mailed in a Not Guilty plea to the City Court.

i already have a bad record and have stayed clean for 4 years until now
my insurance is already through the roof and my parents are going to fucking murk me

I would say your best bet is not to run red lights. If your parents don't "murk" you I am sure some other car will.

was it red before you got to the intersection or was it a yellow that didnt last as long as you thought it would?

if its the second case just tell the judge you didn't believe you could safely stop in time

Did you get caught by a camera or by a cop? If you were caught by a cop just say someone was behind you so you had to run it or they would have hit you. If it was a camera, you're fucked.

Actually red light cameras have caused rear end crashes to go up by as much as 25% since being installed. And they have often not held up in court if said person says they feared they would be rear ended if they didn't run the red. That's your best bet op. I know red light cameras in my city are a thing of the past because their purpose of higher driver safety was completely false and more over was just a revenue increase due to increase in citations.

If you admit to running it for good reason you will lose. The best bet is to Subpoena the officer and hope he doesn't show. Try to pick this ticket apart from an administrative standpoint. File 5 continuances if you have to. Lie lie lie.

well if the officer doesn't show up to court, at least in Oregon you pretty much automatically win. Just be polite to him, and show your concern, most of the time he will either drop the charge or not show up, and if you don't think he will budge then find a time that you know he wont be able to make it to the case.

This is coming from a Civil Engineer who designs this type of stuff for a living.

I would venture to say that %50 of the intersections i come accross have lights that are mis-timed for the length of the intersection. that is to say that the length of the yellow light is too short for the speed limit and length of intersection.

If you really, really want to get out of this ticket, grab a free PDF copy of AASHTO off google, and calc out the correct length of the yellow light. Then go see if the light is the correct length. if it isnt, go make a stink at your local public works- i mean really act pissed off and threaten to sue, take it up to the city manager etc if they dont come out and verify it with you. Once they have verified that it is too short, have them write a letter, or bring them to court.

G (Big G) is the universal gravitational constant. So I am going to guess the yellow light is determined by comparing the speed of venus in solar transit and an unladen african swallow. then divide that number by the mass of an electron to get the total time that a light would be yellow. The last step is to add some quantum mechanics which will leave you with a light that is every colour until it is observed, at which point the time it remains yellow is unknowable.

Technically it depends on the speed limit of the road. The higher the limit the longer the yellow.

g = % grade (+ for uphill, - for down)
d = deceleration rate (10-11 ft/s2)
t = perception-reaction time (1 second)
V85 = 85th %ile speed (speed limit is often used but this is technically incorrect)
