Does anyone have any thoughts on David Wise considering himself the "undude" of skiing. Im sure stoked to see him bring glory to America at the olympics.

He's always seemed like a pretty cool down to earth guy to me, glad to see him get some recognition. Whether he or Torin wins in sochi I don't care, I really like both of them and hope that pipe skiing doesn't die out.

I also don't feel that he represents us terribly accurately. I think skiing is more counterculture than him. But I'd MUCH rather have someone like him be the figurehead for our community than someone like Shaun White. So I'm okay with this.

god you are an idiot... shaun white is a rock star fucking victoria secret models like bar rafeli and flying around in private jets and this guy is a bible bashing no style jock... and you think he is a better representative of your sport? I respect David wise simply because he is on a very high level of ski talent , his air awareness is fucking redick.. to each their own yes.. I still think hes a bible bashing boring person though.. I hope Torrin Wins the olympics that kids a boss.. in saying this though I do respect mr wises talent I don't like his style very much but fuck me dead those back to back double corks are so sick..

hes like nick goeper just a fucking jock that skis.. no style just do the trick and land and win.. this is why freestyle skiing died.. anyways the whole he can only afford 2$ nappies from costco is kinda lame.. if you were marketable then you would be making money now wouldn't you ? x -games pays at least 25 g a win.. and rent in reno is cheap as fuck so you really can't be that poor man..anyways enough shit talking David wise has mad air sense, he is also in the NY times which is really really cool for the sport my opinion really doesn't mean jack shit but I would really really love to see some one like Torrin With mad mad style win the Olympic pipe comp, and hopefully T-Wall or Henrik to win slope.. Fuck nick goeper and his hucking faggot jock style in the anus with a pipe wrapped in barbed wire !

Awesome article, makes me a little more stoked about the Olympics and tells me more about the people I will be chearing for. Wether or not you agree with him you've got to give him some respect for pulling off building a young father and a top tier pro skier. If you are looking for "counterculture" in skiing you have to realize that the entire culture of skiing has shifted, and that when most skiers are rebels just being another rebel isn't that unique

wise is a great skier, and has put in the work to be THE BEST. he will win the olympics... dude or undude. after those facts, all humans have different opinions and lifestyles, if you cant except that you are not a freestyle skier or freestyle human being.

What I think is interesting about this article is that he is one of the very first pro skiers openly admit that skiing really isnt everything for him. Everyone is preaching about how skiing is their life, existence, essence, whatever the fuck you want to call it and he straight up is saying Im skiing to win because I am good at it and then im going to move on.

Complete opposite from Tanner in like a lion, "I just couldnt live without skiing" (whatever the fuck that actual quote is).

Can't deny that, between this and his other recent interviews you have to respect him and how he's doing things. But it shows how far a little personality goes in this world- he reminds me of Steve Fisher, another two time X-Games pipe champion who is all too forgettable. These guys are just plain drier than a box of Ritz... interesting to see it addressed in the article. Say what you will about Shaun or Tanner but at least they added a little spice to these otherwise predictable snow ditch contests.

D_Wise may not be as "cool" as his competitors, but he and TYW are head-and-shoulders better than the rest. No question there. He's got great ski style, he goes huge, and his tricks are the most difficult.

I'd like to see Wise, TYW and Dumont sweep the Olympics - would be sick.

Best of luck to him at Sochi, seems like a legit dude. What irks me is it seems like he doesn't have much passion for the sport. Obviously he loves skiing and has worked very hard to get where he's at, but it would be great to have a die-hard representing us. Not trying to bash the guy, but aside from X-Games I've never heard the dudes name. And I'll admit I've been more out of touch with skiing lately, but I've never seen an edit, a commercial, a thread, let alone his orange name on NS.

Just seems odd to me.

all things aside ... this is laughable - Many snowboard and freestyle contestants seem molded from the same assembly line, models of branded dishevelment marketed as easygoing and athletic slackers, usually longhaired and clothed in flannel, like guitarists from a jam band enjoying a day in the snow.

well, they are talking about contestants so your point is moot. but even talking about skiers and snowboarders in general, that's a massive generalization.  comparing any entire population of outdoor enthusiasts to jam band flannel wearers is kind of retarded.  i get why they used that in the article but it's really just doing what freelowda is saying and trying to build an individualized imagine for Wise which is kind of burning the rest of us unnecessarily.

I guess their specific point may not be too accurate, but I think the premise that many in our sport buy into a marketed persona of sorts, is fairly true.

absolutely!  it's all about marketing.  wise isn't a poster child of individuality when it comes to this... his sponsors aren't paying him to ski, they are paying him to win medals while using their gear

 so cool to use his story as an example of a young guy in a new olympic sport but lame that they would make it sound like the rest of us are just trying to keep up with trends - that's bullshit.

While he seems like a great guy, and is a family-man and all that, I thought that it sounded like the article was belitleing (sp?) the rest of the competitors because they weren't as clean-cut, or model citizens. From the times they quoted Wise, it kind of sounded like he had a holier-than-thou attitude towards the other competitors, i.e. saying that a lot of other skiers view it as a lifetime thing, which it is for a lot of skiers (not competing necessarily, but other industry related things), and that he was only viewing it as a brief part of his life. Though it really is for a lot of comp skiers, a lot of others stick around in the industry because of their love of the sport but he seemed to be competing just because he's good enough to be able to rather than because he loves it. Maybe I'm entirely wrong, but in all he seems like a really good guy, I just wish that there were somebody who was in love with skiing representing it going into the Olympics.

oooooo that hurts! I will go smoke another one, and I will enjoy whats left of my "fading ski career" but come on man my last good segement was EDIAS? WHat about "Retallack" "On top of the hood" "light the wick" "dream factory" "Way of life"..... they all sucked..... ? Ive been skiing my whole life, 10th year as a professional skier.... I think I have made it pretty long in a career that is supposed to only last a few years.... and I will keep it going for as long as I can, and when I am done with my "Fading ski career" I will still be skiing and loving it :)
