Is Tahoe on track to have another horrible season?
I know you're just reppin' your home area and stuff, but this can't be used anymore. Sure before these 3 seasons that definitely held true, but I'm done justifying it with that anymore. Just because it will dump in March doesn't mean that the whole season is salvaged. It's not like it dumps then and the season goes into June or July. Tahoe's still awesome, but this is different.
My home area is Eugene Oregon. Yeah it's different. I totally agree, I'm not trying to justify the season, I'm simply saying that the season will be fine
January is half over. It's constantly above 40 everyday at the resorts and you're trying to say the season is fine? Even at this point a February storm and a march storm still don't do much. Unless you see a storm coming that's gonna sit over us for a month I see no salvaging this season.
I remember a couple years back like two days before closing, northstar got one of its bigger storms of the season. then they closed of course so that was nice
Needs to snow. I work at Rose and I'm on hold right now because we cant open slide and we only have like 30% of the runs open. This year is shit. Even last year was better because we got it decent early on and it kinda let us slide through the rest of the year. This year we have nothing
So far for the next two weeks a high pressure system off the pacific will be keeping moisture away from California. Just like it has been since the storm we got in the beginning of December. Sierra has concerted closing its lifts until we get snow. Unless you're skiing Heavenly or Boreal, you're gonna have a bad time. NASA has some pictures of the drought compared to last season.
I know we're all bitching about the snowfall and how shitty it is for skiing right now but this drought has far greater ramifications than just a sub par ski season.
I'm scared for fire season (which is pretty much right now, typically in summer months!).
I can't wait! I loved it when all of Reno and Tahoe was blanketed in a fiery ash that you would only see coming from Mordor. It was so fun to breathe and just be outside in general. Plus the sun is red so you could look straight at it and it didn't really hurt your eyes but you still got the harmful UV rays. Good times, good times.
Yeah and one weekend we had the great idea to go to the lake thinking it wouldn't be as bad up there at elevation. You could barely see to the middle of the lake let alone any of the mountains on the other side. Way worse up there. It was so eerie.
tahoe sucks in so many ways right now. all in all, though, if you're at northstar their park is better than parks I grew up skiing back east so that's still good. i'd much rather be lapping gnarshit at squalpine though...but that's literally impossible cause it's all rocks :(
Oh yeah. This winter is gonna fuck us over until next year at the minimum.
Lake levels are gonna be low now because of the lack of snow melt. They were already super low so this is gonna kill most of the summer lake activities. Tahoe already docked one of the paddle boats because the water level is too low, so tahoe tourism is gonna take a bash this summer. Also the truckee is gonna be lower because tahoe will be, so the kayaking and white water park downtown are gonna take a hit, the river fest is gonna struggle hardcore because of this. Reno/tahoe tourism is gonna take a beating this summer.
Also like you mentioned, the fire season was shitty last year, and this year is gonna be even drier. Prepare for smoke and ash all summer again. That took a pretty big shot at Reno businesses too because nobody would want to go out. I work at the waterpark and the smoke affected us a ton. We had to still open to try and cover costs and because dumb people would show up. We had to hand out particle masks to the employees because it was so bad.
If the snow doesn't start dropping and dropping heavy, Reno and tahoe are gonna suffer hard in 2014
well i dont know if this helps or not but we dont have shit in whistler either...fucking vail has snow then us. kind of different for us, last year was fairly average, but the three before that were crazy...now everyone here is all spoiled and shit. i know several people who got in like 150 days last year, who still haven't been up this year, just riding their bikes instead.
I wonder how much losses the Tahoe resorts are looking at right now since they're still operating regularly but not that many people are going up to ski.
We're all losing jobs. No snow is coming. Temps are getting higher. Fire season is gonna be crazy insane. Just saying now, you might wanna create defensible space around your homes or even apartments. This. Season. Blows.
all departments at heavenly just got their hours cut except for managers/supervisors. I don't even remember what snow and clouds are anymore. too much sunshine.
