Dilemma: How Are "Smart" Schools Party Schools? (Anyone Been Here?)

Just got accepted into Madison. Great school, great campus, party reputation.

But how do smart schools have party reputations?

Like all the kids at my high school that I know that got into Madison... total wanks. Overachievers (president of 7 clubs type shit). At the rare parties they go to, when alcohol comes out they leave. I would never party with them. And they're awkward as fuck.

Is my high school just a case?
Or are smart party colleges just full of weird awkward kids getting drunk and fucking equally weird bitches?

Anyone been here before? Doubted the party scene of a school just to later have their mind blown?

well i go to madison and its pretty fuckin rowdy. i never doubted the party scene, i kinda doubted the acadmic scene. While it is a great school to get into there are a lot more "smart" schools

a lot of people change when they get to college, dude. high school is kind of an awkward time in life for a lot of kids and most grow out of it as they get older.

because everyone changes when you get to college. HS is a period where a lot of kids are under the influence of everyone but themselves. You change a lot when you get to college.

There are weird kids still, but most everyone changes.

Go to a school that parties hard and has a good football team. Worry about a really 'good' education for your graduate degree, which you'll probably need to be competitive in the future professional world.

Yeah U of W a smart school. But fact of the matter is smart kids know how to party. Ever seen Animal House? Yeah, it wasn't as hard to get into Dartmouth back then, but they didn't just let any stupid person in.

U of W is the hardest state school in Wisconsin. It's smart.

Haha, I just know that all the party kids from my school go to UW-Oshkosh (SLOSHkosh!!!), and I've just heard about these faggish kids getting into Madison... I really love the gamdeday atmosphere and shit, and yeah there's always gonna be a party crowd.

everyone and their mother in WI goes to Madison, it has pretty much every type of person and its really big. Also quite easy to get into, so its not that much of a smart party school, but they do party pretty hard. When I think of a smart party school I think of something like vanderbilt or something (I'll probably be going to a smaller NESCAC type school so kinda the opposite lol).

A school is what you make out of it. Most successful guy I know went to UW Madison and now brings in 20 million a year. Super smart, graduated summa cum laude and then went to their business school as well. First guy to help manage Harvard Management Company despite not going to Harvard. One of the few guys to have large positive asset returns during the Financial Crisis as well.

Huh? Congrats on getting into UW -Madison but that's a decent state school, not a 'smart' school. It's a huge school, you'll meet kids of all types and levels of intelligence and academic achievement. Be prepared to work hard to get a good GPA that gets you internships and jobs since the competition will be tough like at any other large school and it's easy to be lazy and just do the bare minimum.

As for parties, like almost all state colleges it will have a big party scene. I don't think you can really understand what partying is like in college versus high school but it's much, much more intense. You won't find any shortage of partying at UW-Madison or any similar big school. I don't go there btw, just my 2 cents.

From personal experience, a "Smart School" is an expensive school. And where there's wealthy kids there's plenty of cocaine and kegs to go around

The way I look at it is work hard play hard. Everyone parties on the weekends because it's so stressful during the week. I do I to Madison, and love it btw

Well probably part of the reason is that if you manage time well, you can get all your shit done and get good grades, but still get shit hammered thurs-sat nights. You don't have to be barely passing in a liberal arts program to party hard in college.

USNews is the most credible and standard source of college rankings. And here is their most recent rank list within the US:

Obviously there are different ranking systems used, and I don't know what shanghai ranking based their list on. But a ranking system that places Madison higher than schools like Duke, Vanderbilt, UMich, NYU, and Brown is very questionable.

Lists based on the overall university are stupid IMO. It's best to look at rankings based on what your majoring in. Last time I checked Madison was #6 in chemical engineering which is what I and employers of chemical engineers care about.

 No school has a magic "smart" filter they pour applications through. I've met kids (children really) who go to Ivies and I'm ... unimpressed. And I've met kids that go to state schools that are fucking brilliant.

College is not that hard if you simply pay attention and use your brain instead of staring at your computer screen in agony, "Ohhhhhhhhh gooooooood this paper is so fucking haaaaaaard." It's only hard because you haven't started ACTUALLY WORKING.

Are there moments of extreme difficulty? Yes, of course. But the whole notion that college is this incredibly trying intellectual journey is just not true. The hardest part is applying yourself.

Figure out what fascinates you and pursue it.

Honestly, IMO, college rankings in general are a screwed up system. Most colleges try to inflate certain statistics ( mostly application numbers and related acceptance rates) as an attempt to make themselves seem more exclusive.

All people going to or planning on attending college really need to know (besides working as hard as you can in something you enjoy) is how to network and sell yourself. Good grades help a lot, but if you dont have connections and cannot sell yourself, what sets you apart from others?

Schools are what you make of them. Does an Ivy look good on a resume? Fuck yeah it does. Does graduating from UW-M look good on a resume? No doubt about it. If you put in the effort academically and socially (not partying) regardless of where you go, you can open doors. There is no reason to think otherwise. In the end, it is all user related, not system related.

I stand by what I said about Madison being a decent state school. He was asking about the parties and social life. At actual 'smart' schools, like MIT or University of Chicago in particular, I would say that there is a noticeable difference in the types and frequency of parties compared to other schools. But Madison does not fit into this category, it's a large state school so you'll have lot's of different types of kids and in fact I would argue it is more of a 'party' school than a 'smart' school. It's #2 in Playboy's 2013 rankings:
