i think they just take certain falls better. say if you slip out on a rail or ice, more surface area and lard on impact means those "hip pointers" (first time ive heard of that)dont make it to the hip. Of course if your gonna knuckle the biggest jump in the park, its worse to have +150 lbs extra to trash your legs on impact. Had a heavier friend bail on a heel-side slide[longboarding] and the board slipped out we were going 30 and he slammed right on his hip and elbow on asphalt and he stood back up totally fine.... i would have broken my elbow and hip just because i dont have that squishiness.
