So I came on this website today to find an article talking about the average age of users:

I propose a change to the site to eliminate much of the immaturity, useless answers and 'trolling'. Many users of Reddit will know the upvote/downvote system - this allows the best, most helpful answers to rise to the top, and the stupid ones die out.

I think this would massively help the site, and likely attract more users - users that are pushed to other sites such as Reddit, TGR and Ski the East because they can't get the answers they want here.

This has nothing to do with age. You made a title about an age study and then talked about the upvote/.downvote system.

I like NS how it is. Its easier than the others and you can see all the shitty stuff people say. NS is NS, I dont want it to be TGR or reddit

No, reddit is a stupid circle jerk of shitty memes and reposts. The only way to get any good content is on certain subreddits.

Reddit works like this:
Mediocre resposted meme -> "hehehe, upvote" -> gets frontpaged
Content that takes effort to read -> "tl;dr" -> sinks into oblivion

People downvote the fuck out of anything they don't agree with. I like newschooler's way of doing it much better. It's a forum, not a thread popularity contest. Threads that are the most polar get the most and latest responses and are therefore on the front page. The home page even highlights the most popular thread.

I would agree with some of those statements sure.

The thing you are missing though: the way the system works on Newschoolers.com, however, makes it extremely difficult to get any sort of useful information, advice or knowledge at all. Ends up being a time-waster site and not a helpful one.

Agree with this. Reddit only gives you what the audience perceives as the "best." If the maturity levels are to be believed, it will only exacerbate the problem as people upvote images, jokes, and memes over actual advise. Go to any subreddit you like, look at the top posts all time. They will all be images, because it takes the least amount of effort to view, laugh at, and upvote. No real discussion rises to the top.

I also think that this study is a bit misleading. Mean is a shitty way to figure out the "average" NS user's age, as a few extremely old outliers could completely warp the statistic. I think that median would be a much more representative statistic to go by.

newschoolers has been around for 6 years longer than reddit and we are doing fine. if you think reddit's format provides the best quality content then you are kidding yourself. the top comments are all liberal, in defense of neckbeards or pc gaming, or memes.

at least people can argue on NS and have their arguments shown instead of it saying "this post has recieved too many downvotes" for unpopular opinions. (by the way this happened in a RIP warnick thread in /r/skiing where capernicus was trying to tell people to respect his family by not inquiring about the cause of death)

it's not like reddit isn't immature either, half the time on serious threads the top comments are sexist or jokes. and an entire slew of much shittier ones have been downvoted so as to not be seen.

having spent a lot of time on both sites, i'd much rather prefer NS how it is

You hit the nail on the head with this one. It doesn't matter if someone is 14 years old or 30 years old, if they have something worth contributing in a mature manner then age is irrelevant. The whole age study is interesting but its pointless if everyone acts like 13 year old regardless of age.

Well, if you wanted the downvote system to hide posts or remove them, almost every single post of yours in this thread would not be seen. Have you ever thought of it that way? The way it is right now kind of shows what the community likes or doesn't.

I'm not proposing anything because I'm content for now, I like newschoolers. We aren't TGR and we certainly aren't Reddit, we're Newschoolers, so why try to be like them?

I've definitely gotten a lot of useful information from newschoolers from summer set ups to things like info on the olympics and sponsorships and stuff. Some stuff on here might not be relevant to me, but it's definitely interesting to read and it's a good place to expand on your knowledge on skiing as a whole as well as getting a lot of laughs.
