Just a quick question, I typically color correct in premiere, but would like to try it out in after effects, what is an effective workflow between the two programs. Would you recommend editing the whole video then throwing it into After Effects or Grade clip by clip and move them into premiere to render?
Well there is certain overlay techniques I can use in after effects and not premiere. So I spent a few hours messing around with this and updated to Premiere pro 7 and after effects cs7 and I opened my premiere file in after effects graded the footage and imported the after effect file back into premiere, now it won't let me drop the after effects project into my premiere timeline, any ideas why?
Premiere/AE 7, all I did in AE is add three adjustment layers with levels, an invert layer in soft light and a black and white layer with a multiply mode. All went well in AE, opened it in Premiere using the dynamic link. Made a sequence out of the AE file, but the clip won't drop into the timeline. Can't seem to figure it out.
You can't dynamic link from Premiere to AE and then back to Premiere. It only works one way. You'll need to export a video out of AE to import back into Premiere.
EarthTones - You can transfer a Premiere timeline to Resolve by exporting a Final Cut Pro XML (File > Export) and importing that in Resolve (File > Import AAF, EDL, XML). This works best if you flatten your timeline down to one layer in Premiere before exporting the XML.
Whenever I use dynamic link between Premiere and AE I always use the 'replace with after effects comp' option which opens dynamic link server and opens AE. Once in AE, do your color correction/compositing/whatever you're doing and than just save the AE project. Don't export or anything just save. When you go back to premiere the clip in the timeline should be replaced with the AE comp through the dynamic link server than you can just export from premiere. That's how my workflow usually goes when i'm using premiere/ae
Finally got it to work, thank you. Once back in Premiere my new macbook pro can't handle the after effects composition so I have to export. In other words, definitely need do all of your editing in premiere before bringing into after effects.
What codec are you using with the original clips in premiere? If you're using a codec that is more compatible with premiere, playback will be much smoother, even after editing clips in AE.
I was editing h264 files straight off the camera, which would explain why my computer can't handle switching between Premiere and After Effects. However, my computer handles h264 files in premiere just fine. Maybe I will try and convert it to ProRes and see if that helps.
Try to stay away from h264 in premiere, you can generate quality loss from export compression. While premiere doesn't have a native (preferred) codec, I've had good luck with ProRes.
