Either a light blue or white shirt, go with a simple subtle striped patterned shirt. A nice solid white shirt is definitely a necessity though. Beauty of a navy suit is its really versatile as far as tie colors. White shirt I'd prob go with a nice maroon striped tie. Blue shirt I'd prob go with a yellow striped tie.
I avoid solid color shirts/ties, just not my taste.
Don't forget a pocket square, that shit sets off a suit. I'm amazed more people don't use them.
I agree with this but my take on the tie is that you don't do a solid regular silk tie BUT you can do solid color if there is a texture to it. For example, I get a ton of compliments on a solid blue tie I wear but it has a rougher wool like texture to it with zero sheen.
Also, wearing a striped tie with one set of stripes the same color as the shirt is extremely tacky.
